How To Fix Annoying Potholes In a Gravel Driveway

Gravel driveways and roads can be a pain when it comes to the potholes and bumps caused by overuse and general wear and tear.
This video covers the basics on how to repair a gravel driveway by using a harley rake and skid steer.
It's best to break up the pothole. by doing that and tilling the compacted gravel up to the top, re packing the gravel, you'll end up with a finished driveway that's almost as good as the day it was built.
Thanks for watching!

I'm putting money on it that you know this already. The people that live on this private road may not. They're more happy with a perfectly flat road. No crown. Standing water will eventually create more potholes. You did an outstanding job on the road. No more potholes, leveled and packed. Until they let you go to town on it creating a crown, with pitch to drain water off to the sides, you'll be coming back to do this over again. You did a great job. But you'll have to do that great job again.

Very aware of it and You can actually get a really good crown on it. I push the material into the center from each side, then run the machine on an angle (sitting the tracks on the high side/center. I always have to cut the crown down as its to high. You need to have enough existing material on the road to make it work well. The video doesn't show the crowning process at all and its one of the most common questions. THanks for watching and commenting!

That's a cool attachment. I do something similar with my planer attachment on rock drives that are pot holed. Mine can go up to 6 inches deep but I usually don't go any deeper than 3. 95 percent of the time I'm prepping them for pavement so I blend them back up and regrade them with the paver and compact. Our road base here doesn't have any sand or clay, just limestone rock and fines and powder. Makes for a super hard surface when compacted.

I showed this to a concrete gravel guy and he was amazed that it could work with what looked like so little weight on the rake. So does it work on really impacted gravel and deep pot holes?
@AveryExcavating
@AveryExcavating 6 лет назад
Yea it works awesome. You don't need a ton of weight as the tiller/drum can rotate "up" and pull the gravel up and out. Once you get it broke up I go over it 3 times or so and till it all up. The gravel looks just like its been processed out of the pit again and then regrade/crown as needed. Big KEY to it is doing driveways after a good rain - otherwise, if its dry it takes a lot longer to till it up and the clay will simply float or blow away and you're left with a sandy rock mixture. This rake has been awesome. Only had to replace pumps and bearings first time last year and its about 5-6 year old rake.

have you ever used a grader attachment for the front of a skid steer after the power rake to give the road a crown? I've been looking to do a similar project as shown in your video. The grader attachments move a bit more and would offer the flexibility of a nice crown. Just not sure if it would be worth the extra rental fee.

@AveryExcavating
@AveryExcavating 5 лет назад
You don't need to but you'll have standing water if you don't which will cause potholes faster again. the Box blade should angle and you can crown it by pulling material to the center and regrading from the center.

On a drive that's 1" minus. Would the Harley rake just collect the 1" stuff or would it roll over the drum and spread it out. Never used one and not sure if it's right for this job.

For the work that you do, including this, would the smaller machine, say one move down, be okay? The 70 hp machines, standard flow for example.

How do you like your Kubota for grading? I've run Bobcat, Cat, and Mustang track loaders. The Mustang was no good, it just didn't have the correct geometry to be able to cut grade, cut & fill in backdraging, etc. Of course the Bobcat and Cat are great. I'm thinking of getting a Kubota because we have other Kubota equipment we like, just no experience with their compact track loaders. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Nice work on the driveway btw!

how did you do a crown? The bucket cant tilt left/right can it?
@AveryExcavating
@AveryExcavating 7 лет назад
The bucket is fixed. I push material from each side of the drive into the center and get a pad or pitch/angle for the machine to sit/work from. easy as pie.
@shanegurney5843
@shanegurney5843 6 лет назад
Not to be another know it all but it just will not last regardless of your superb efforts without a good crown. Crowning is difficult with a power rake.
@buckhorncortez
@buckhorncortez 5 лет назад
@@shanegurney5843 Depend on the power rake setup. I have a Harley Rake that I use on a tractor with a three-point hitch. The hitch has a hydraulic top/tilt kit. I adjust the trailing wheels so I can tilt the right side of the rake down, and then I angle the rake to the center of the road. That picks material from the side of the road and directs it to the center. When you've moved enough material from the edge of the road to the center, you level the rake and go down the center of the road and that flattens the material out into a crown. Not at all "difficult" if you're using a rake on a three-point hitch.

The guy that does our private roads in our association does a poor job. They make excuses saying the sides of the road are still frozen and too wet. They spent over 19,000 on our tax money for a few roads. There has been no plowing and hardly no snow this year in michigan. We pay by the lot and I'm really upset. People are complaining about it. The president also says speeding for the pot holes is a factor. The main road which on live on is always bad. Its 15 mph in there and yes people speed.

I saw one in the shop a week ago getting a new DPF filter on it, evidently they never let it regen.
