Ben As a rookie to drywalling your videos have augmented my lack of experience with knowledge and Because of that knowledge I have been able to jump into the mud with both feet and have the confidence to get the job done to a surprisingly high level. It seems to be all about how the mud is put on and really I don’t have to sand very much … just texturing after the second and subsequent coats. Thank-you for your excellent and informative videos, you do such an excellent job at describing the skills and moments of the trowel and hawk.

In another of your videos, you compared the merits of both mesh and paper tape saying: mesh tape is really only good for very small repairs and you preferred using paper everywhere especially for overhead structural wall components. In this video, you used mesh tape on the overhead. Can you elaborate on why you choose mesh tape for this solution instead of paper?
@andI201d
@andI201d 5 лет назад
because its being blended in with the already painted wall. mesh tape is for repairs/patches because its sticky and then you throw mud on top. with paper you would have to put some mud on first, then the tape, then more mud. paper is best for new installations down the tapered/butt joints and inside corners

@@Van_bya_river like how he was describing in the segment where he noted that the corner bead should be able to move independently from the framing, this is the point. Like you said it flexes a lot, which it may need to at a given time. That prevents cracking and other issues

I use both metal and paper beads.... but I’m not sure I agree with the theory that paper beads won’t crack because they’re not fastened to the framing , just to the drywall itself. While this is true, the drywall is fastened to the framing so if the wood starts to move or twist, the drywall that’s screwed to it is going to move and twist.... therefore the bead is going to move and twist.

If you're doing a drywall job on a shack with wet lumber, always use a paper bead, OR cash the check fast and change your name or town. The poor drywaller will get blamed for bead pops. Most builders know why but like blaming the drywaller.

Hi Ben, I too prefer tape on metal beading. However, I'm not sure I agree with your reasoning as to why it's superior. What confuses me about your explanation is that given that the drywall is also fastened to the framing then both drywall and beading should be affected equally by any movement in the framing. Don't get me wrong; I too dislike fastened metal beading. However, it seems to me that it's the lack of mud underneath the metal beading that's probably the biggest contributor to the formation of cracks, as the contact between the bead and the underlying surface is non-continuous, rather than the use of fasteners per se. Of course, I realize that it's the use of fasteners that constitutes their appeal. However, if I were to attribute root cause then I would lean more towards the lack of use mud under the bead. Am I missing something?
@framing2finish
@framing2finish 5 лет назад
His description is right on the money. If the framing twists or moves ever so slightly, by the time that slight movement telegraphs to the end of the screw, in will crack the bead. Also factor in that the mud doesn't bond that great to the metal. Look how easily it can be chipped away. You are correct with your point about the bead being weaker by the lack of mud underneath. That's actually what the big holes in metal beads are for is to allow mud into the bead. The smaller hole is for fastening, although I prefer to not use the holes at all and screw right through the steel. The paper faced beads bond to the drywall much better. It's essentially gluing two pieces of paper together, especially if you use taping mud which has a higher glue content.

@danervin2530
@danervin2530 4 года назад
Aaron Reeder QUICKset, not thinset. Thinset is a mortar product. Mesh tape is used here because it’s easier to wipe flat, which makes a smaller joint in this situation. I’ve done the exact same thing with steel beads. If you use paper tape you have to wipe REALLY tight, which can either tear the tape, bunch the tape, or pull the tape- and chances are you still have a proud joint from the corner. Mesh is just less hassle, and plenty strong here with the con-fill. I use Durock for this situation.

On yet another comment he also said that all-purpose mud and FibaFuse could be used (or, less preferably, all-purpose and paper tape) instead of quickset and mesh tape. I think it's because using paper tape risks building out the corner too much while trying to cover it adequately.

@wandameadows5736

I was in drywall for 15 years & this happening because quantity became more important than quality. A lot bead git huge with drywall nails that pop out & right when I was getting out of it in 2008, during the housing crash, bull nose, plastic rounded option, was just becoming popular. I have no idea what's popular today but all these issues are because contractors wanted houses done so fast & it as Mexican's that worked 24/7 turning houses in no time. Those Mexican crews would come to the States for 8 months & work every day then go home for 4. For a while I was doing ceiling texture, stipple, spray & knockdown, & we had a 3 man crew & it was hard to keep up with the Mexican finishers some times. Any time you rush jobs the quality suffers. I'm not mad at the Mexicans because they where hard workers but the US Contractors get ridiculous with there scheduling. The more people that get into building homes the worse it gets cause the competition focuses on how fast things can be turned.

Then I used Fiba Fuse tape over the cracks and coated them couple times. My only concern is after seeing your video, I realized I should have used at least couple more screws to secure the corner bead ! Shit. Hopefully it holds ! 😅. Let’s see, that was back in May. And so far it’s held up. Thanks for the video it was very helpful. I mostly paint but most of the work I bid has drywall and plaster issues. Keep up the good work brother

Holy Crap! I have an 8 inch length of damaged corner bead to repair. I only have a 6 inch knife and a few smaller ones. Do I have to buy more gear and also do I have to mud as high as Ben did?

I just bought some plastic corner bead. Should I go with metal? I'm sensing that the plastic will bunch up if I try to do a project like this.

PLUS hitting your head on paper must hurt much less than these steel beams LOL! But surely steel affords some strength too?

I searched for a guide on repairing a damaged corner- not an inner corner or an outer corner, but the corner of a sheet that got kicked while hanging a door. Any recommendations for how to fix other than cutting a new section to patch?

Why wouldnt you ise Fiberfuse, I'd never choose mesh for any reason.

Thank you so much for your videos. Right to the point and practical info.... I don't do much interior finish. I'm helping a family friend with a little bit of everything after some hack remodel and sale. Your videos are extremely helpful.

Vancouver Carpenter iMovie. Do I edit the movie on my computer at home? Or do I edit the movie on my iPhone with iMovie?
