When visitors want to access a WordPress site, specific PHP commands will retrieve information from the database and display it on the web browser. If the site cannot connect to the database, it will show the “Error establishing a database connection” message instead.
There are three main reasons why a WordPress website shows the “error establishing a database connection” message:
👉 The database server is down
👉 The database login information is incorrect
👉 The website’s core files are corrupted
Here are four methods to fix the error in establishing a database connection:
🟣 Match the Database Login Credentials
Check if the MySQL database’s login settings match those in the wpconfig.php file. To do that, make sure you have access to your MySQL database and the wpconfig.php file.
🟣 Make Sure Your Domain Is Pointing To Your Host Provider
Switching to a new hosting provider can cause this error if your domain is not pointing to it. Check the domain’s nameservers in your hosting control panel and WHOIS lookup tool. If the results don’t match, change the nameservers at your domain registrar.
🟣 Check Your Database Server
Your MySQL server might not be able to handle more connections after reaching its maximum capacity.
Contact your hosting provider to check your database server or use PHP to connect to MySQL and see if your database user has sufficient permissions.
🟣 Fix the Corrupted Files
A faulty plugin or theme can also cause an error in establishing a database connection. Deactivate your plugins and themes separately to see which one is the cause. Try deactivating the most recent plugin or theme first.
