Motorcycle used in the video is a 2011 Kawasaki Ninja ZX10R. A Factory Pro shift star is being installed to potentially cure a hard shifting issue I've been having lately.
Update: I've had this installed for over a year prior to uploading this video and it has nearly eliminated my hard shifts and I have had no false neutrals to speak of however I never had false neutral issues before the install. Shifts are butter smooth, require little force, and it is very reliable. Good product Factory Pro.
My girlfriend Akasha Wolf shot this video and helped with editing. Please check out her channel if you are into holistic treatments and spirituality. Thanks a lot. I love you.

My motorbike has a hard shift and false neutral at times and now after almost a year, I finally understand the problem or at least I have an idea. I tried adjusting the clutch cable and the problem persisted. The problem keeps getting worse with time. The dealer has no idea what the problem is and I think I will do the repair myself. Hey Boss, great video. Very informative. Do you mind if I pick your brain for a moment? I'm going to make a post on the appropriate forum but you seem to have a good understanding of mc drivetrains. The other day I was riding pretty hard. I think I was in third gear WOT and went to shift up to 4th and missed the gear somehow. So basically I dumped the clutch with a handful of throttle. It didn't wheelie I think because I was tucked in combination with my weight of 190lbs. Instead, the chain pulled my rear axle forward but only on the left side so my rear wheel was pointing slightly to the right and my chain was slack af. I parked the bike and walked to work and came back later with tools to fix it. The bike seems to be running fine but I'm kind of scared to push it now thinking something could've broke that I wouldn't notice at city speeds. I recently did a chain and sprocket conversion and the torque wrench I used was the same one I used to fix the rear axle. When I changed the chain and sprockets the thing clicked like normal, but when I used it the other day the damn thing wouldn't click and I may have overtightened the axle nut a bit. Even though we just got our torque wrenches back from being recertified, it could be the issue. Either way, I know for sure it is at least 79ft/lbs now. Any thoughts on how much and what kind of damage I might have done?
@TheMotorcycleBoss
@TheMotorcycleBoss 2 года назад
When you wheelie, the chain experiences more torque than any other time. That will pull your axle further forward and exposes all the slack that you left during your tensioning process. Your chain becoming loose after a wheelie is normal but if your axle pulls in on one side, it tells me that you or your mechanic didn't properly tension/torque your chain & axle. If your tension adjusters on your swing arm are fine, and your chain is fine, and your exle is fine, then as long as it runs fine, you should be good. But that would be my only assumption not being able to actually see it and mess with it. I hope this helps you out.

I have never seen wear on a shift star so I'm pretty confident that it came from the factory that way. Usually if it is a wear point, it will be much smoother instead of jagged and sharp.

I think I might have to replace the shift star on my 07 ZX6R. Thankfully it's a lot easier to get to. I suspect the protruding bit on my shift star between 2nd and 3rd is blunted or even broken. The bike finds a neutral there when shifting between them, mostly on the down shift. There is also some blunting of the hill or protruding bit between 3rd and 4th as occasionally it will do the same there. The only thing is that the shifter sticks down, and will usually then crunch in to gear with some force (hurts to hear it). I'm concerned there might be some other issue either with the forks or the drum itself. Will also be inspecting the friction and steel plates on the way in.
@phillipmichaels213
@phillipmichaels213 2 года назад
my bike is doing the exact same thing. except i see my neutral light when going from 3rd to 2nd. then i can painfully hear the crunching when i pop it back up into 2nd. im hoping its just the shift star and detent. i dont want my track bike to grenade itself.
@TheLandOfThePain
@TheLandOfThePain 2 года назад
@@phillipmichaels213 Hey mate, yep mine was also showing the neutral light. I managed to fix it and in the end it was a really simple fix which cost me $150 in parts (would've costed $3000 just to diagnose the issue). It's not the actual shift star which is the problem (which is quite sturdy) but the gear shifter linkage. The part number is 13161-0598 for the 07 ZX6r. I can walk you through how to fix it if you like. There is a 'tooth' on the shifter which is quite fragile and can crack if the bike is dropped. It will become unstable over time and eventually break which is why you see the problem worsening. This tooth interfaces with the shift star. It is connected from the shifter on the left through the bike to the shift star behind the clutch.

@TheMotorcycleBoss
@TheMotorcycleBoss Год назад
Sounds like a shoft star or shift detent could possibly be the issue. The unfortunate part is you wont really know until you start swapping out parts. But that's where i would start first. The shift star is the main component that selects your gears. So false neutrals could be directly affected by replacing it.

Although I don't hear any grinding when this happens, Happened 3 times to me now and each time in a different gear.... Any ideas??, take note it's under moderate throttle and not under heavy acceleration loads. So I'm not sure it's a clutch slipping... What could it be?
@TheMotorcycleBoss
@TheMotorcycleBoss 4 года назад
When it pops you out of gear, if the rpm's run high and you slowly regain power, most likely a slipping clutch. Other issues that involve popping out of gear maybe related to worn dogs on your transmission gears. To tell the difference, I would have to ride the bike and hear/feel it. Any more info you have on symptoms related to this? More info would make diagnosis easier. Do you regain throttle control slowly, or is it more instant control untill you give too much throttle?

It seems like your issue could be the shift star/detent and/or the transmission drum having bad machining. Check to see if your bike has any factory recalls first. If you have an option to pick up a factory pro shift star, I would get it. If you need an upgraded roller bearing detent, I would definitely get that too. I believe that should fix the problem but you never know where the fault could be.

How did the shift star change the gear shifts? I am having issues with my gears and am tempted to follow this.
@TheMotorcycleBoss
@TheMotorcycleBoss Год назад
Put simply, the factory shift star is more crudely machined and hardly polished at all. The upgrade has better angles and better finish. Resulting in buttery smooth shifts and helps to eliminate false neutrals thanks to the angles used in the new design. Hope this answers your question. I would definitely recommend it although it is quite an involved process. It has substantially improved my shifts to this day.

@TheMotorcycleBoss
@TheMotorcycleBoss Год назад
Hey! Thanks for commenting. It is called a shift star. Shift stars can typically last the lifetime of the bike as they are made from hardened steel and are heavily lubricated during normal operation. However; sometimes issues may arise with poorly manufactured ones as shown in this video which can constitute a replacement/upgrade. If you are experiencing issues getting into neutral when stopped but it seems easier when you are slightly moving, that may indicate a number of issues. I would check the following in this order: 1. Adjust clutch cable/lever free-play. 2. Ensure you are using the correct oil for your clutch. (If it isn't a motorcycle-specific oil, it can cause the clutch to drag) 3. Check or replace your shift star and shifting detent arm. If none of this yields any improvements, a deeper dive is needed and will most likely need to be taken to a certified technician to further diagnose the problem. I hope this helps and if you happen to discover what the issue is, I'd love to know about it.

Quick question, but first, awesome video. Thank you Ok on the shift shaft is it possible to push it too had from the side with the c clamp and do some damage where its making some tink tink like clutch plates rattling inside now when started?? Any info or advice will be appropriated. Thank you
@TheMotorcycleBoss
@TheMotorcycleBoss 3 года назад
Thanks for your comment! The shaft should have a retaining clip that limits its horizontal movement. That free-play is determined by the manufacturer to be within acceptable limits without dislodging any internals. So as long as that clip is in place, I would say that isn't an expected issue. Idk what bike you have but excessive play in your clutch pack for whatever reason or loose pressure plate screws could be a culprit. In very rare cases, maybe a broken clutch plate or broken clutch spring could cause a noise. Hard to say without hearing it myself or seeing any possible impact points.
@tonyrigg9182
@tonyrigg9182 3 года назад
Can i ask only if you know why it is important for some clutch's for the first friction plate to come off is apposed to the rest of the pack ?
@TheMotorcycleBoss
@TheMotorcycleBoss 3 года назад
Excellent question. The final clutch plate is offset from the rest for 2 main reasons, one is to redistribute the stress on the clutch basket due to the friction plates' torque on the clutch basket. It makes sense to put torque forces at different points on the clutch basket. And secondly, is to quiet the noise and chatter that clutches could invoke. Since it is the first clutch plate to engage with the pressure plate, its slot it's sitting in should be reinforced and acts like a buffer in some ways to the rest of the clutch pack thus potentially reducing clutch basket wear and clutch noise. Although this fine detail is common amongst many manufacturers, in most cases, it is not detrimental to the overall safety of the motor or the rider. Consider it something that is specifically done to increase performance rather than an extremely important step in the process. Many people forget to do this step and the clutch will still function flawlessly so it isn't the end of the world if you decide not to do this step. However; just keep in mind that if your factory service manual says to install it that way, it's best for the life of the bike to just do it. Plus it might keep your clutch chatter down. I hope this was a sufficient answer. Ride safe and I hope to hear from you in my other videos. Cheers!

Hey brother, I need your expertise.... my daughter just bought a honda shadow, mid 80's I think.... she called me yesterday saying her bike goes from 1st to neutral by itself... it doesn't happen all the time, and only when it's in first..... please help
@TheMotorcycleBoss
@TheMotorcycleBoss 3 года назад
It could be 2 things; the first gear in the transmission is sheared a bit making it pop out of first into neutral, or the shift star/detent need to be replaced like in this video. Most likely it's the former tho unfortunately. If it only happens with 1 particular gear, that's usually transmission related. Only fix for that is to get the transmission gear replaced which is usually not cheap. It makes sense to be the case with such an old bike as it's not uncommon. The Honda Shadow is a staple bike that has been around forever and is well-known, so getting it fixed maybe cheaper than I'm thinking. It maybe cheaper too to do a motor swap honestly since they are so plentiful. I hope this helps point you in the right direction. If you figure out the issue, I would love to know what the cause is. I hope you both subscribe if you haven't already. My channel could help her out when it comes to figuring out different maintenance aspects of her bike. Hey! Thanks for reaching out! Typically, if you have issues that are gear-specific, that typically indicates a transmission gear issue. But if I were you, I would consider the possibility of getting this shift kit and seeing if it alleviates the problem. It is an upgrade nonetheless and if it doesn't help the issue, then you know what you should be looking at next. Fortunately, the way our ZX10's are built, you don't have to drop the motor or split the cases in order to access the transmission gears. They made working on these bikes pretty easy. Hope that helps! Good luck and I hope you subscribed! Cheers!

My bike (Zx6r 2008) was dropped on the shift lever, now it won’t shift out of neutral it’s completely stuck and won’t move?? Any suggestions? Will it be an expensive fix ?
@TheMotorcycleBoss
@TheMotorcycleBoss 4 года назад
You will most likely have to do something similar to what I did. But not as deep. You will probably need to replace your shift shaft and/or your return spring. You have to remove your clutch cover like I did to assess the damage. But I don't know how bad your damage is. Could be a simple swap. Could be more catastrophic than that.

I accidentally shifted into 2nd gear from neutral in high RPM’s once. Did i damage anything by chance internally? Thanks
@TheMotorcycleBoss
@TheMotorcycleBoss 4 года назад
I dont know the specifics of the situation but it is definitely possible. Not to say you did. But switching gears at high rpms without the use of the clutch or blipping the throttle to reduce pressure on the transmission dogs could make the dogs smash together violently causing fracture or shearing off transmission dogs. If the bike runs fine and doesn't make any weird noises, grinding feeling when slipping the clutch, or popping you out of gear under load, you should be ok. But dont make it a habit.
@henryscreations
@henryscreations 4 года назад
The Motorcycle Boss I appreciate the answer. I was trying to the utilize the quickshifter on my bike and i guess I didn’t have the throttle open enough to jump from 1st to 2nd. And instead of letting the RPM’s drop down or pulling in the clutch my dumb self decided to quick shift from Neutral into 2nd gear. I ended ruining my chain but im scared that i done worse to the transmission and will not find out until i get my bike back from the shop.

It sounds like it could be clutch or shift star. If you inspect your clutch it should tell you which is the problem. Worst case scenario is your transmission barrel wasn't cut correctly but that is very rare.

I just bought my first bike 2012 zx6r it shifts into first kinda hard Then sometimes it goes into first without a sound I did a oil change (not sure if it means anything) but a couple times after shifting into first I had to rock it forward to get it into first some say it’s normal for the clunk into first but the three different ways clunking,smooth,and rocking into first sounds out of place but idk anything
@TheMotorcycleBoss
@TheMotorcycleBoss 4 года назад
Congratulations on your new bike! If you haven't noticed already, motorcycles are friggin heaven! You will notice that if the bike is running and you put it into first, it will jutter a little and clunk which is normal. If you want to get to neutral from first, sometimes you will have to nudge the bike forward to disengage the gears in the transmission enough to allow the gears to change. This is kinda the same reason you let off the throttle when you change gears while riding. However, having to rock the bike to go from neutral to first i would say is not very normal unless the bike is turned off then it is normal. I hope this helps. Good luck with the new bike. The zx6r was my first bike as well.

I'm assuming you are talking about the cover and not splitting your cases. Use a soft mallet to bang on it in different spots. Don't wedge a screwdriver into it. You could mar the metal and cause a leak afterwards. There should be some pry tabs on opposite ends of the cover too.

Without hearing or feeling the issue myself, I could only make one assumption. Usually if you are having an issue only in 1 gear, it is transmission related. @TheMotorcycleBoss
@TheMotorcycleBoss 4 года назад
It sounds like your clutch isnt fully disengaging. I've heard of certain oil types sticking the clutchpack together making it difficult to allow them to slip uninhibited. I've also ran into a case where the clutch would have a hard time engaging at all and that was because the oil wasn't rated for a wet clutch system. You may also want to take a look at your clutch cable slack/adjustment and make sure it is lashed properly. And of course, consider swapping out your shift star/ shift detent if one is available for your bike. But it seems like your issue is more clutch related than shift star related. Good luck bro. Hope this helps.

I have a 2004 Suzuki v strom engine and when I am speeding with 4 or 5 gears, at the moment I pull the friction, I also reduce the gears, the engine shuts down directly, as it lowers the gear, there are cases when it shuts off, as soon as it pulls the friction, what problem might there be?

@@olsitafaj3571 when you say "pull the friction" I'm assuming you are saying that you are pulling the clutch in. It seems to be a somewhat common occurrence with v-stroms. Hard shifting and gear related problems seem to be a common thing with all Japanese brands. I had a Suzuki Tu250 with a similar hard shifting problems and a Honda CB300 with gear related issues. With Italian brand motorcycles I never experienced such issues nor I ever thought that a brand new Japanese bike would show gear related issues. Thumb down for the Japanese brands, good looking bike but they can't invent what others have already invented.

If i can spend a lot less on a bike and get just as much if not more power, i'm doing it. If all i have to do is put in some elbowgrease and swap out a shift star for paying thousands less than an italian brand, that's a good deal. There is a reason the ZX10R is all over World Superbike.

@@billadmond9450 there are discrepencies with any brand. You can't just capitalize on a couple failures of a brand and dictate it as trash. If that were the case, then your italian brands would be quite low on that list. The top 4 that you are picking on are the top on the list of reliability with Yamaha at the top even tho I feel it is innacurate the study was backed by credible data. And only a minor percentage separates the other 3. Harley and Victory were at the very bottom. This was back in 2016/2017. Now Victory and Harley have moved up the list but the same still applies for Italian brands. And the first italian brand in the top 10 being Ducati with triple the failure rate of Yamaha and more than double the failure rate of Kawasaki. My opinion has become fact here.
