That's a lot of energy when it flips back! Great video! Thankfully I've never experienced this on my cargo trailer or the Chaparral we had.

Damit, I have been rv ing a long time and never knew about this until, I recently replaced all tires but this time I removed all the wheels at home and took them to the tire shop. The problem was my method of jacking up the trailer. Now I know why the warning says do not use stabilizers to lift rv from the ground. For the life of me I couldn't figure out why my trailer was listing to one side on my trip last weekend. I thought I broke a spring. Sure enough, my hangers flipped on one side. Your a life saver. I would have been replacing my springs this weekend if not for you.

Thanks for the video. At 2:34 the video is under the trailer and good shackle is on the right. At 2:52 when he begins using the jack the camera is on the outside of the trailer and the good shackle is on the left. Lift the good shackle. NEVER try and help it with a pry bar, you will break an arm or jaw or worse!

I've got a 14' enclosed trailer that had a Harley Trike and about 400 pounds of other stuff in it. Loaded properly, correct tongue weight, load distribution hitch. I had one flip going around a tight exit ramp curve on the inside, I must have hit a bump. VERY SCARY, as the front tire took the weight, which completely unloaded the tongue! Crawled to a trailer place that did this for me, but with a bar. Unfortunately when we got home I noticed that the equalizer is no longer level with the trailer leveled and the distance between the tires side to side is 5 on one, and 6.25 on the side that flipped. A straight edge shows the front axle tire angled about 3/8" out. Something must have bent, or an axle slid on the spring or something. Now I'm trying to find a place around here to re-align the axles, without a whole lot of luck. I did try to jack up the trailer, but of course not knowing this, I got the wrong axle, or maybe I put it on the frame. Any advice, anybody?
@OpenAirAdventure
@OpenAirAdventure Месяц назад
@nathanwahl9224 the equalizer usually doesn't position itself perfectly straight. Most of them that I've seen, regardless of the male or quality, sit a little slanted. I'd say take a few measurements and see how the axles line up with frame. You're probably ok, but check things over regardless.
@nathanwahl9224
@nathanwahl9224 Месяц назад
@@OpenAirAdventure The distance between axle centerlines is about 1 1/4", most places I've seen say rhey have to be 1/4" or less. A quick look didn't show anything, at least nothing appears bent. I'll have to look further. Thank you,

At 2:45 you said the one on the "left" is flipped. Which is incorrect.
@OpenAirAdventure
@OpenAirAdventure 2 года назад
From underneath the trailer at 2:45, in that shot the left is flipped. Then at 2:50 I'm filming outside so the flipped shackle is on the right. That might have confused you.

What size camper do you have and what size floor jack? My 14,500 lb 5th did the same thing when i changed tires.
@OpenAirAdventure
@OpenAirAdventure 6 месяцев назад
30', 10,000 lbs. It doesn't take a whole lot to lift the axle so 2 or 3 ton Jack should work.

After 7 years my boat trailer shackles are suddenly flipping when I turn sharply such as into a driveway, around a 90 degree corner, etc. After calling the manufacturer, I replaced the equalizer, shackles, all bolts and bushings. It still happens. Interestingly it doesn't seem to matter if the boat trailer has the load of the boat on it or not. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?
@OpenAirAdventure
@OpenAirAdventure 4 года назад
Not sure why after seven years this is just starting or was it happening all along and you're just noticing the issue. So if its happening frequently its definitely short leaf springs, your links or shackles should be somewhat vertical, take a look at the video after I flip mine and lowered the jack and you will notice the angle, if yours are too short the angle will be more horizontal like the leaf springs. And if the shackles on your equalizer look like they are in the right position then replace the shackle links with longer one's, short links tend to flip more easily. Hope this helps.
@MillerMarineLLC
@MillerMarineLLC 4 года назад
@@OpenAirAdventure Thanks for the reply. The links seems to be in the right position when not flipped. I'm beginning to wonder if the leaf springs are getting weak and allowing this to happen. The trailer is in great condition and doesn't have many miles on it for it's age (400-500 miles/year). Hate to throw it away and buy a new one for this issue.
@TOM-yd8ub
@TOM-yd8ub 3 года назад
@@MillerMarineLLC I have a much older trailer that is specifically set up for 15" tires. I cannot fit 235/80r16's as they rub between the front and back tire. The newer trailer manufacturers have been stretching the same suspension to fit taller tires, and in doing so the geometry of the shackles is close to flipping. You may try a longer equalizer before longer shackles. I had tried longer shackles, but ended up breaking the top leaf spring, so keep that in mind before trying longer shackles.
@nitrojunki4249
@nitrojunki4249 3 года назад
Just a guess and I may not know what I’m talking about here but, has there been a change in the tongue height of your trailer? In other words is your trailer higher in the front than it used to be possibly by changing your hitch or the height of the back your truck? Possibly maybe this is what’s causing it
@growingup9954
@growingup9954 Год назад
Can it be done the same way when the trailer is loaded?
@OpenAirAdventure
@OpenAirAdventure Год назад
I'm not sure, I mean, how much is the trailer squatting? Are your leafs fully compressed? That's something you'll have to consider. Jack it carefully.
@jstar1000
@jstar1000 2 года назад
So what caused it to flip in the first place, you taking the wheels off?

Yep, I used the self leveling to lift all four tires off the ground in order to change them, when I put it back down one shackle was flipped

How did it get flipped? I just noticed one side of my dual axle travel trailer is sits lower than the other side. I looked and compared the two shackles. The higher side has the shackle proper and horizontal flat and even. The lower side I see the shackle isn't flat like the other side, one end is high and other end low. Could it be due to the uneven ground? I will look more tomorrow. Thanks 👍🏼

How did you make out?
@Hundert1
@Hundert1 3 года назад
@@OpenAirAdventure I examined more closely every couple of weeks and it's not as bad as I originally thought. I think the reason why my travel trailer is lower on the passenger side is due to the ground being a bit lower on that side. Best way for me to tell better is to hitch up and take her out for a spin this spring to the nearest beach where there's plenty of huge flat parking. Thanks for asking. Happy and safe RVing 👍🏼🌲☃️
