In this video I show how you can solve not working clock problem. If you have a better solution, please leave it in comments.
This video should include years 97,98,99,00,01 Honda models.
This is the name of clock, which I bought on e-bay:
"0.30" Digital Car Motorcycle bike Clock Watch Time DC 12V 24V yellow LED Clock" There is no permanent link for this clock on e-bay. Please use this name to search one. Make sure you get the right size: 0.30"
Led size : 30mm ×14mm×17.5mm
PCB SIZE : 35mm×16mm×17.5mm
Power voltage: DC 7v-30V
I bought Display Color: yellow, which is much brighter.
By the way, the service, who somebody offers on e-bay will, probably, re-solder these elements the same way, which I show you in this video. But the problem may still remain and will come back, because it's in a digital display itself.

Just did it - GREAT MANUAL!!! I added one more trick - I desoldered built-in battery and replaced it with cr2032 socket glued outside the clock - no need to dissemble the clock to change the battery.

the way I fixed my CRV clock is via the following. This might help some ppl. 1. Take the PCB board out of the holder 2. Desolder the four earth pins of the LCD display 3. Carefully tilt and bend the LED bank upright 90 degrees so that all components are exposed underneath the display. 4. Reflow the solder and touch up ALL discrete components. There are about 15 or so. Careful with overheating and the amount of solder used. Less is more. If you have a headband, eye magnifier, use it. Those diodes and resistors are tiny. You might also want to reflow the solder across the LED bank on the otherside of the board. 5. If you're bench testing remember to attach both the 1st and 2nd pin with your positive lead. The last pin is GND. 6. Put it back together and enjoy. Thanks to the poster that gave me this idea when I watched his video. If you want to go down the path the blogger did and replace the clock and have a hard time finding it on ebay, do a search on AlliExpress. Search " Digital Clock car 0.28 " . $9US last time i checked.

AngeV2 Leave your results in 2-3 months after your fix. the problem with this CRV clock is that it was designed to overheat and die no matter how you going to fix it.
@zappa916
@zappa916 9 лет назад
perhaps. But you gave me another idea. Cut a hole in the back of the plastic housing and redirect some vent air via a small tube to cool it down. or install a miniature cpu fan. hmmm..
@SergSpace
@SergSpace 9 лет назад
AngeV2 Are you serious?! LOL! You make things even more complicated. Don't you see the flaw in your idea? Heating on inside and cooling on outside will only accelerate breaking soldered contacts on electric board. This clock is bad engineered. Some times there is nothing you can do but start over.
@zappa916

SergSpace Basic heat dissipation dynamics. If i had to explain, you wouldn't understand. sorry. Some light reading for educational purposes. lol. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_management_of_electronic_devices_and_systems peace.
@SergSpace
@SergSpace 9 лет назад
AngeV2 Don't be sorry. You did not know I have a BSEE. BTW the link you provided is not applicable for this clock simply because there is not a heat sink here and It would be a cumbersome construction if you add it. But go procreative, do what you think is fun, but keep it optimized.

Thank you very much ! Works perfectly, after trying to redo all solders, the only way was to change the screen. Good luminosity, cool red color, that's perfect. I paid it 5.46€ delivery include in France, on Ebay !

Thank you for this idea. My Daihatsu Mira L7 has more or less the same type of clock installed, so I just went to Aliexpress and bought a suitable clock with temperature-sensor function. I hope it'll turn out as nice as yours :)

mine wouldn't work when I got my crv, so my way of fixing it was hitting it from the top and then poking it. it worked.
@SergSpace
@SergSpace 8 лет назад
+MisterHatsofMemphis You did what? LOL! It will work until next road bump. Don't hit it again and again, you will break your car.

I didn't do it super hard, I mostly just poked at the front of the clock screen. In retrospect, saying I hit the top dash sounds sketchy as hell.

Thanks so much. I did this yesterday, and it works perfect. Only thing I don't like is it's a 24 hour clock instead of 12 hour. I much prefer the 12 hour. I tried to find one, to no avail. Still, looks way better than being dead.

Well so much work for this little clock on little car , you removing digital display and putting different not exact much , you need to resolder old display , 4 legs on he other side of he board thats all !!! I fixed this clock before ,for same reason board is under constant presure and solder cracks no matter what kind of display you install .
@SergSpace
@SergSpace 9 лет назад
FYI, I re-soldered all contacts on board. It did not help. I offered a solution. To take it or not is up to you.

I ordered the clock as you recommended. I am a little nervous about doing this procedure because I don't want to cut the wrong circuit tracks. Stopping the video along the way helped some. Serg, would you be able to post a simple diagram of the board that shows exactly where to cut the electrical tracks as well exactly where to solder the green and black wires ?
@SergSpace
@SergSpace 8 лет назад
+David and JoAnn Conway I don't have a diagram of the board. this is simple logic to cut power tracks on the board which could interact in watches. Just make sure that ACC power from Car goes to watch wire. The old board I used mostly for platform purpose and to be able to use button of old watches. Don't be nervous. It's low voltage. if you do something wrong the watch just won't turn on. Follow my instructions, you'll be Okey.

+SergSpace - I just want to make sure that I cut the correct tracks
@davidandjoannconway6122

+David and JoAnn Conway - Serg - I hooked up the clock and when I turn it on the numbers keep advancing and I cannot stop it from doing so. Is the clock faulty or is the problem something else ?
@SergSpace
@SergSpace 8 лет назад
+David and JoAnn Conway You mean, that display shows you running numbers as you would press at Set Time button? Did you check the clock before you hooked it up to your car using home 12V adapter? Anyway, it looks like you have a short circuit, probably, on board of new clock between 2 contacts which set time when they connect to each other. Resolder them. If it won't help, disconnect new clock from old circuit board. Try to find short circuit. You could also use ohmmeter to find short circuit, when you turn power off on clock.
@davidandjoannconway6122
@davidandjoannconway6122 8 лет назад
+SergSpace Yes, when the clock comes on the numbers keep changing as though the clock time was being set. Regarding the 2 contacts I should resolder, should the green and black wires have their own separate contacts and not touch each other ? Is their an exact location to solder them ? I soldered them based on where they appear on the video.

Cool, But I prefer to re apply welding to the current capacitors and make it work factory again... Messing too much with the circuit tracks doesnt make me feel safe of possible short circuit or any other electrical problem caused by re wiring and modifying the original circuits in that way...
@SergSpace

+wtrdogg20 Do what prefer. Problem will stay. It's an Engineering design flow. It will pop up again.

sergspace, thanks for this post. i'm assuming the dimming option doesnt work for this when you turn on your headlights at night? or does it?
@SergSpace
@SergSpace 10 месяцев назад
Sorry for late reply. Dimming won't work, since the replacement clock has undependable circuit, which doesn't have this dimming function.

To Michael Bloom No, don't. In fact, I just give an idea of how to fix it and dimensions of compatible watches. The battery of watches that I bought is contact welded, so I had to solder new battery replacement recently because old battery was depleted and watches started to show zeros every time when engine is off.
@michaelbloom5342
@michaelbloom5342 9 лет назад
SergSpace Yes, I had to re-solder the contacts on the battery as well, even when new out of the package. It was re-setting itself to 0:00 with the ignition off, despite the battery showing 3.2VDC on my multimeter. I looked at the board under my magnifying glass, and there was a cold solder joint from the battery. Easy fix, and it was up and running.

Are these clocks still working well after the repairs? I have this issue, and my mechanic has gotten 3 or 4 replacements from a junk yard that were, well...junk. Wondering if it is even worth the trouble.
@SergSpace
@SergSpace 7 лет назад
Honda's clock have a design issue. Those from junk yard will not last long neither. And yes, mine still work. I replaced the battery, though, about a year ago, but they are still on. "is it even worth the trouble"? - I don't know. Do you want to have a quick look at dash board clock, while you drive or risk to crush, picking at you cell phone?
