WOW! Next best thing to paving NEW asphalt is what you guys did. Lot of back breaking labor (I felt it here) but the result with the roller is great. Nice job for sure! Now I subscribed too. Sonny (CT)

I’ve actually worked on roads where they used geotextile. We worked on a large stretch of highway that instead of sand they used recycled tires and sewed it into geotextile. The original road followed a river and when flooding occurred the sand had a tendency to wash out and undermine the roadway.

You should oil and screen the driveway 3 coats , that would water proof the base , then after 2 years sweep it off and seal it or you a decorative rock on the final coat and leave it natural .

To everyone commenting on Hiring drivers or renting a Bobcat, Bigger tractor Etc, the point of this was to prove that you yourself can do it, and save money. We got quotes for $15,000, this cost us $3500, thats $11,500 in savings. If we proceeded to rent equipment and hire people we would not have maximized our savings. Recycled over mud is a serious challenge, and is over-simplified here. No doubt it ‘covers’ mud, but ‘fixing’ the driveway is another story.

Just an FYI Someone earlier in another RAP video said he spilled a bunch of vegetable oil (for his bio-diesel) on his recycled driveway and it is actually very solid in that area. You may want to look into trying that in an out of the way area. Oil may be free at fried food joints.

What's the update on how this driveway is holding up, and did you did anything else to it? I'm finishing my own up later today. I'm really hoping for positive stories from people making this work, but I also want to know anything to look out for. I used "2-inch crushed millings". One area was soft ground, the other area was on harder ground that had some stones under it (I think it was originally a driveway that they put some dirt on & let grass grow over). I'll be running a plate compactor over it later today.

What do you mean 'watch for water drainage'? I have to something to a property but I have to make sure it still 'pervious' (allows water thru). I think once you roll the recycled asphalt it is not pervious anymore. Is that true?

@adrianricker

I realise this was posted a year ago, but it's not the wrong kind of rake. They are putting down millings, which are cold, so no need for an asphalt rake. Asphalt rake is wider, so he could move more material with one, but who cares? He could have been using a flat shovel and it still wouldn't be the "wrong" tool.

These millings look great at first but it's a bad solution. That nice dark color goes away very quick. And after awhile these millings get so compacted the surface turns to black top. Black top that is very weak and cracks everywhere. Good for an equipment yard,

Asphalt millings work great to stabilize a soft dirt base, but it won't hold up like you think it will, best to lay a 2 to 3 inch HMA top course and you will have a driveway that will last you 20 to 25 years.
@DennisBrownDhighway
@DennisBrownDhighway 5 лет назад
I have some experience in this field about 42 years of it, we could also stamp the asphalt into whatever pattern you choose, then 4 coats of streetbond paint and your neighbors will envy you for years.
@tjlomin1466
@tjlomin1466 5 лет назад
@@DennisBrownDhighway What's hma? Around me contractors tried using millings as a base before asphalt and it failed. Something about the asphalt being like 95% water repellant and caused problems between the 2 layers if water got in. The best base i have seen is the 100% crushed concrete, rca, recycled concrete aggregate. Any water that comes up from underneath the ground is well absorbed and dried out over time. The free rca is mixed with dirt, brick, asphalt and cement. Still a better solution then millings.

In my area if it gets muddy, the millings will not help. Believe me I know. Putting a base of rock does the trick. I use 3" or so rock in the bad areas. 21a or 57 in other areas. No problem now with millings on top.

M W your crazy dude!!! That stuff is ground up road asphalt when they replace the roads and hiways in your area, you’ve been driving on it everyday for how many years and I’ve never seen Texas in the news cause their roads are melting. The only way it would ever come close is when you have a vehicle fire or a tanker truck accident and the truck catches fire and damages the pavement and they come in , grind it down and replace it. It’s hot in Texas but not near as hot as a tanker fire is buddy, you will be just fine with it on your drive

In california everything is considered hazardous. Hell, they want to put cancer warning labels on coffee. Surprised they don't have warning labels on bottled water..."inhaling product can cause premature death". Just because California is ass-backwards doesn't mean everywhere else needs to be. Oil is not classified as a hazardous material under USDOT regulations. As for locating the crumbles, just ask your local municipality. They will most likely give them to you for free when they do paving projects, I know that is was we do.
