#Radiator RADIATOR NOT WORKING. radiator not heating up. Cold central heating rad. How to clear an Airlock. How to fix a radiator. So if you've got one radiator on your central heating system that's not working, I'm going to do a video today. This video today is to show you how to get it working again. I've also got thermal imaging camera, so I can show you the radiators. Obviously you will not be able to feel the radiators from our video, so I thought if I use the thermal imaging camera, I can show you. So, yeah. Let's have a look. So I've got the thermal imaging camera here and if we have a look on that, we can see at the moment we've only got one of the radiators working. We can see the pipe work, it's getting warm. So what I'm going to do now, I'm going to open the valves on the rest of them radiators, and then we'll see if they're all working.
The first thing we'll do is make sure that all the radiator valves are open. So this is the TRV. This is the thermostatic radiator valve. Now we could see in the video with a thermal imaging camera, this one is bombed and this one is working. And then if we go to the next radiator, so obviously this would be in a different room. At the moment we can see that this one is on zero and it's turned off. So if we open that one up and then now that's open, we would need to leave that for awhile. And then if we go to the next radiator again, that might be in another room, and that one's turned off. So we're going to turn that one on, and again in this one. And then what we're going to do that, we're going to wait now a few minutes and we're going to see if they all get warm.
There could be a number of reasons why your radiator is not working, or one of the radiators is not working. So now we've opened all the valves. This radiator here, this one is working fine. This one down here, again, this one's working fine. And when we go over to this one, this one is working as well. And we've got one radiator here that is cold. So I'm going to show you now, a few ways to remedy that. So if we have a look on the thermal imaging camera, we can see the bottom two radiators that were confined. And then when we go up to the top, we can see the top one is working there. But when we go over to this one here, we're can see... It's a bit awkward to show you that. But you can see that that one's not getting warm.
It could be that your radiator's, it's got air in radiator and you may need to bleed the radiator. And we'll have the link below on how to bleed the radiator. And also what to look out for when you are bleeding the radiates as well. But if you're ready to bleed the radiator, you need to get a cloth or a jug and bleed it until the water comes out of the top. On this particular one, this is fine. It's full of water and that's not the issue. So let's have a look now closely at the radiator. When we look at the radiator, it could be that the lock shield on this radiator, on the central heating radiator, could be this lock shield here is turned off. Or it could also be that on the thermostatic radiator valve, the pin on the bottom, the pin under here is stuck as well. It could also be able other reasons. It could also be that the system is sludged up or you could have an air lock and I'll show you how to clear an air lock as well.
But first of all we'll tip the top off on the thermostatic radiator valve. Now it depend on the type of valve. But on this one, you can undo this fitting here. I'll get a spinner. Sometimes you can open that to number five and your bolts are going to do that. I can't undo it. And sometimes they might be a bit tight and you might need to get a set of grips like that. And what you can sometimes find is, that these pins here, are stripped down. I do see people say about pulling these pins up. I'd be a little bit careful with that. What I try and is, my view is try and push them down. Try and free them up and might be that you can gently tap it with a hammer. And I have seen other videos that say not to do that, but that's my view.
If you gently tap it with the hammer, just gently, you don't want to damage the top of it. And you want to free that valve up, that pin up, on there. But we can say that that one's working fine. So the next thing to check then, if we go to the lock shield lock. And on the lock shield, take the top off, took the cap off, on the lock shield valve. And then we'll need to make sure that this part of the valve is open and we can get a spinner on there, on a set of grips. And we turn that. I'll zoom into that and show you.
So to open this valve, you put your spinner on. And you turn it anticlockwise, and anticlockwise is opening the valve. If you turn it the other way, if you turn it clockwise, that is turning the valve off. So what

Thanks for this video, had one radiator in the system not working. Tried bleeding, flushing, lockshield etc nothing worked. Then I noticed in your vid to turn ALL the radiators off apart from the one not working, did this then switched on the C/H. Heard a brief gurgle in the suspect radiator then it stated to get hot. Turned all the others on and all working good now. Many thanks for covering all options it really helped.

Fantastic!!! Just revived the cold as Ice, main Living room Radiator, following precisely what you advised, including ensuring the Return Valve was in the “open” position. Boiling hot now! Cannot thank you enough. Even used a pair of Channel-lock Pliers, for the unthreading and pressing down on the Pin. Great explanation, and saved me a call out which was next on the agenda, but for one final try, after watching your brilliant video. Thank you very, very much!!

@@AllenHart999 Quick question Allen, is filter fluid to be used instead of inhibitor or alongside it. What's your take? It states it already has inhibitor in, but I always drop in a bottle or 2 of F1 or X100. Do you find filter fluid is any more effective? I only really use FF it's in the installers pack. Thanks

Many thanks pal, the old stuck pin under the thermo knob was my issue. A little tip I'd suggest for anyone reading this, as I was already in the radiator fixing mode I checked all the other radiators in the house and had a couple that was working okay but just not quite to their full potential, so I did the thermo pin trick for those as well and now they are boiling hot as they should be. Thanks again 👍

Great vid Allen. Looking forward to the balancing rads vid. Ideally, if you can also mention how you might use temperature probes so it's more accurate. I struggled with a large system, there was about 20 rads and just know it wasn't perfect in the end.
@AllenHart999
@AllenHart999 4 года назад
I was on a Training day a few weeks back and talking about the probes, Problems is they can never be accurate as when you change a rad the flow to others would also change. I will do a video on how i do it. Thanks.

Amazing video, very clear and informative. I am having the same issue on a customers house. I'm not a plumber, but a general builder and have worked on both heating systems for rad moves, additional rads etc and hot and cold pipework for kitchens, bathrooms etc. I have followed all the steps in the video, and have even changed the valves and radiator, but still have the issue of rad not working. The house is supplied with Osma gold pipework throughout (which is discontinued) with copper tails to rads etc, the pipes to radiators are 10mm. Are the pipes themselves potentially blocked to the radiator as it is in 10mm and easily clogged? The customer can not afford a power flush, so while I'm there I'd like to help them to resolve this and save them money. Thank you.

Another top tip: Did you know that 8 times out of 10, an electrical face plate screw will work in a handled, mini lever, ballvalve? Iso/wash mac or on a filling loops cw iso or c/v with back up iso. Just If you lose the screw supplied. You just need to saw it down to around 10mm. Just tried it. I have lots of loose screws.. according to mi missus. Mainly in my head tho. Tally-ho, pip pip. Have a reyt grand Chrimbo, Al.

Good Video as always Allan, would be good to see how you balance a system ( I’ve seen guys use temp gauges the pipes ether side of a rad ) I managed to balance mine pretty effectively by just cracking open the lockshield just enough to hear flow and ensure the rad actually got hot.

Hi Allen, Thanx for the vid. I have the pin stuck down; used WD40 over a week and gently pushed/pulled the pin up an down. Radiator works just fine when pin is up although this has now turned into manual operation which is not ideal. I guess the next thing might be to replace the radiator valve which I'm probably not capable of doing. Any idea how much I might be expected to pay for this? Cheers.

Hello Allen, Before releasing air from my house radiators, they were not working properly (only bottom of radiators or some of them not working at all). I released airs from all radiators and them put them on again. They are all cold and not hot water coming at all. I will appreciate , if you could help me to solve the issue. Thanks
