Top 5 ways to improve/fix the show. 5. Extend the fight scenes. 4. No cliche tv black cuts. 3. Less expositions, more showings. 2. Keep the trio inseparable unless absolutely necessary. 1. No character regressions.

1. There arent many fight scenes in TLT 2. Thats not a real issue that impacts the show 3. You need exposition especially when you deal with fantasy stories. Also exposition doesnt mean the show is bad. 2. There are moments of separation over the next 4 books 1. The characterization was spot on in the show The show isnt perfect but it was a solid 9/10. Also Rick never said it would be a 1:1 adaptation but a faithful one which was absolutely nailed

I feel like no one has talked about the major issues with this series. I have only seen videos of fans praising the series and I absolutely do not understand why. I agree with all the points in this video. The main issue for me was the over abundance of exposition as you discussed. Pacing is also an issue; I feel like the series focuses on moments that have absolutely no pay off. For me the dialogue did not feel natural between characters. Conversations felt forced and did not feel natural or interesting. I am a huge fan of the books, but unfortunately this entire series felt like a chore to watch. I tuned in every week and it became more and more difficult to finish an episode just to see what they do with the adaptation. Im dissapointed. I would love to see all 5 seasons adapted, but if the issues arent addressed I don't think I will enjoy this series if it continues at all.

I guess we all know the main culprit of those issues. The very short runtime that Disney is giving the writers. They need to write the screenplay with that runtime in mind. And I, and apparently most critics and audiences, agree that they managed to make it work. The show is definitely not perfect, the main culprit of which is the short runtime.

I think the critique is a bit harsh. I agree with the exposition but it’s not as easy as just saying put less exposition. The book is in the first person were in Percy’s mind the entire time so there’s things that just have to be said. I agree it’s a lot but without most of it the story wouldn’t make sense. There’s many times in Harry Potter that they just skipped exposition that should have been there and it made the plot not make sense or we didn’t really understand people’s motives for being a certain way. I dislike some of the choices like the casino episode in the show like I fully agree the movie did that more justice then the show. But I’m not sure why people thought it be 1 to 1 adaptation. It’s good to add to the story and most of the changes weren’t that bad and added more depth to character

Season 2 onwards needs longer episodes and more episodes with less exposition so the characters actually grow and discover shut instead of just being kinda Mary Sueish knowing everything. Give more focus to what matters, less focus to what doesn’t matter as much. Frankly it’s blatantly quite obvious that either Rick or Disney blatantly lied to us about the show being a faithful adaptation of the books and they deserve to be called out for this.

It was a 6/10 for me. Partly because my expectations were too high. It lacked action and exposition was too long. The flash back scenes with sally were ok but I feel like we could have gotten the same result with hearing sally say something like " hold fast perseus, brave the storm" when he needed encouragement and percy talking about his mom along the trip and how much he missed her while annabeth talked about her family problems as well. Annabeth and grover felt 1 dimensional especially with the changes to the arch and the river boat ride. Architecture and spiders are big parts of annabeths character but those scene got changed for reasons beyond me. Every time i was anticipating an action sequence like the book, it got changed and i was disappointed. It felt like they werent meaningful changes, just changes to save on the budget. Why couldnt the bus explode? Why did they change it from the spiders to the chair? Why was camp half blood just a bunch of cabins in the woods and not a training ground? Why was hermes at the lotus casino and how do they manage to make las vegas seem dull? Why change the deadline when you could have just had the clock strike midnight when he got there and still have the same poseidon surrenders scene. I really dont understand how the kids having PHD's in mythology is supposed to make the story better when it just sucks all the possible action moments out of the show. I wish percy was more sassy, annabeth had more flaws and grover had more quirks. It needed to be more light hearted at times and also more serious other times. The kids never felt like they were in danger and there were no stakes. Now there were things that I didnt mind being changed or actually enjoyed. Mr. D was great, Walker is great when hes allowed to be persassy, i didnt mind the 4 pearls, the casting was pretty good for the most part, the scenes that were added to be funny actually made me laugh, (the floss and what is love). The final episode was pretty great, i just wished the fight scene was longer and they explained the magic of the pearls alittle better. Over all, i think they need to allow for more flawed characters regardless of how frustrating it is for fans to go" how do you NOT know its medusa?!" The gods need to feel like gods and be terrifying. They need to figure out the tone, and allow more of percys sass and humor to come through. The pacing should get better with this next season but i want to see where the 15mil per episode is going.

I think Sea of monsters will be a better season even though it's one of the least liked in the books. But It has alot more fight scenes cause of all the monsters that appear. Which include the bronze bulls, the fight with polyphemus which was kinda long in the book , the hydra , the monsters Percy fought in PE class playing dogeball, plus the sirens, the birds in the chariot race and I think they fought more but I can't remember. The epsiodes will definetly be longer considering all the rest of the drama that happens in this book.

For me, as a film director and published author that cares about having badass faithful adaptations, there's some things that it needs to do to become better: Longer fight scenes. Build up the whole season for a TWO MINUTES basic sword clashing is extremely underwhelming. Didn't they learn ANYTHING with Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan vs Darth Maul?!! That movie isn't that great, but, boy, that long fight sequence between them pays off very much 😵! More book accurate characterizations. For example, keep the actress as Annabeth, fine, but at least put her on blonde braids as a great book reference and to show that the producers actually care about pleasing book fans in some degree. As you said, let the story has tension and some decent buildup. For the "but it's for cHiLdReN!!!" crowd: our ENTIRE generation grew up with a children movie that starts with gypsy persecution, a woman opening her head on the church stairs and a priest trying to drown a baby. And rewatching over and over again. And without mentioning the children animation series with a lot of insinuations and adult jokes... And remember when Simba cried over Mufasa's LITERAL DEAD BODY and was gaslit by his own uncle to think it was his fault?!! Kids can AND SHOULD deal pretty well with suspense, intense sequences and heavy themes. Let's not be hypocrate here, thank you very much.

To me they can’t even fix it with blonde braids. The blonde hair was a symbol of how she struggled against a stereotype growing up and her trying to prove herself constantly is something that she starts doing in her childhood, when she gets called dumb blonde (this we find out in the Mark of Athena). Her need to prove herself is what motivates her need to go on a quest. Her need to go on the quest is also driven by her ambition, we get a glimpse of that ambition in the first book as she plays a game in the lotus casino where she reinvents New York city with Architecture. She thinks she can do everything better and she wants to prove it to everyone. This need basically starts with her being bullied and having her intelligence questioned on the basis of her blonde appearance. Also since her godly parent is Athena, she also constantly has to prove herself to her mother too. And I guess they could make a swap and say that african american kids are seen as unintelligent (I have never seen this stereotype before but idk they could do it simply for the story and to make this character her) and have her character shown as a kid, where she’s bullied and we are shown how she tries to prove them wrong. For me its an insult that they thought it was unimportant for her to be blonde. Since they built her character around the fact, I would never think a white person can replace any other race in a story. Its an identity of a person which also shapes them. But anyway they could have done other details for her character better.
@ohood1788
@ohood1788 8 месяцев назад
@@username_creates6991 Black people are seen as less intelligent, and statistically this stereotype negatively affects them at a much higher frequency than it does blonde people. Also the dumb blonde trope has been subverted countless times by now (legally blond, suite life of zack and cody, btvs etc.) while I can't think of many examples of subverting the stereotype as it pertains to black girls (especially in a fantasy setting) so I think it's nice to see. I also don't think Annabeth was ever bullied for being blonde because we never actually saw that and I don't recall a passage in the books that establishes this. I think saying that her character is built around being blonde is strange because the dumb blonde thing wasn't brought up at all in the first series (which is what this show is adapting), it was just one line in the Heroes of Olympus. Was Annabeth not a fully realized character before that? If Rick stopped at PJO and never wrote the other books, there would be no mention of Annabeth's "blonde struggles" and she would still be a well-written, nuanced character. Especially because it was never actually demonstrated in the story itself, I don't recall a single moment where for example someone at camp undermined her intelligence. She was leading capture the flag teams and they happily followed her lead and nobody questioned her strategies. Clarisse actually called her wise girl, like she was being made fun of for being smart not dumb. Also the book described the entire Athena cabin as blondes (which in itself is nonsensical but whatever) so am I meant to believe that everyone thinks the cabin is dumb because of their hair color, despite that never actually happening in the story? The integral part of Annabeth's character is that she feels she has to try so hard just to be noticed and taken seriously. I mean you mentioned it yourself, her need to prove herself and impress her mother, her ambition etc. I agree with all of that like that is Annabeth's character at her core. I just don't agree that it all stems from her being blonde because if that was the case then it would've been mentioned in the first series for her motivations to make sense. The fact that her motivations still made sense without that tells me it's not blondness but the fact that she is a young girl. Young girls are never taken seriously, their interests are often seen as frivolous and anything associated with femininity is constantly critiqued by society. Feeling the need to try harder in order to be taken seriously is a universal experience for most young girls. The Lightning Thief Musical portrays this so well, Annabeth has a song called My Grand Plan that showcases her motivations, hardships and ambitions and the lyrics don't mention her blondness but do mention her being a girl. I'm not saying that her blond hair can't be interpreted as contributing to her issues as the dumb blonde trope was far more prevalent in the 2000s, when the books were written, but I just don't agree that it's the main thing. I don't think your interpretation is wrong, it's just not universal. Like her character still makes perfect sense without blonde hair, all those issues and insecurities can apply to another girl who isn't blonde. And the fact that she's portrayed as black here tells us she definitely has been judged for her appearance at one point or another. I think her casting is perfectly fine and good. The script, however, didn't do a good enough job in establishing her motivations in my opinion and I think that's a real shame.

I mean, Rick Riordan himself said he 'doesn't watch allot of film' so maybe that's part of why this feels so lackluster. (He's planning to do Netflix movies for Kane Chronicles...Gods why?) I liked S1 okay, but I do feel that mid-section was dragging a bit with its filler. Like I really thought it was going to pull what the comic book did and jus skip the Luke betrayal for a later season. Hate the movie if you will, you can't deny that the final fight between Luke and Percy wasn't at least cool to see, and while this show didn't skip it looked like it was about it for some time. I do want this series to complete, but I just can't see Heroes of Olympus being made. Those books are like 70+ chapters each and Disney runs like 8 maybe 10 episodes per season. Luke brought up Annabeth's fear of Spiders? They don't even meet Arachne till Mark of Athena! Is she randomly going to show up during one of the seasons?

@HamzaBoujelouah
@HamzaBoujelouah 8 месяцев назад
Fair enough point, but to counter I'd say if she was that smart why didn't she realise it in the book? The answer is tension. Rick originally dumbed the kids down in the book to add tension. Plus they were tired, hungry and vulnerable, the show has none of that and so it's not interesting to watch.

Hey! Loved your video. A lot of the points you made are valid, though I I would like to contest some. Specifically how you mentioned Luke mentioning spiders coming out for nowhere. While yes, it is exposition, I feel its backed up by Luke using it as a way to explain to Percy the lesson hes teaching him. I would also like to mention how while yes, the final fight scene was a bit short and rushed, it improves a lot to make sense story wise, considering the fact that if Kronos literally told Percy that his survival is the key to Kronos’ return, then it wouldn’t make sense for Luke to try to kill Percy, although we do see that he contemplated it in the show. Plus, it also characterizes Annabeth a lot more, allowing her to be able to build off of knowing that Luke actually did betray them, and eventually help build up her reasoning for why she wanted to save Luke in the last olympian.
@HamzaBoujelouah
@HamzaBoujelouah 8 месяцев назад
Those are some fair points. I think my issue with the Luke/spider reference is that it feels a little clunky. I would have liked to have seen Annabeth's fear of spiders rather than just being told it, it sort of feels like the writers going "hey look we referenced something from the books." The Kronos wanting to keep Percy alive, and so Luke doesn't want to try and poison him is a valid point.
@ashleyterry6424
@ashleyterry6424 8 месяцев назад
But part of her growth is her unrelenting trust that Luke is being controlled. If she knows that Luke is doing this of his own free will, you lose the tension between percy and annabeth over it, she loses the reason for taking over the sky in titans curse and she has no reason to feel guilty over turning Luke away as her " big choice" after the battle of the labyrinth.
@flashyashy6894
@flashyashy6894 8 месяцев назад
@@ashleyterry6424 This is a perfectly fair point, but they can still pull that off with Annabeth just believing that she can save him and bring him back. Having her HOPE that she can at least. Lots of shows and movies pull it off, so I would assume they can too

To me its not good. Its bad in story telling. And it lacks explanation. Especially explenations that show us instead of telling us. I watched my boyfriend react to the series as someone who didn’t read it, and I did. I understood everything cus it feels like a recap of the books. He didn’t understand why the Greek Gods live in the USA, he didn’t understand why Percy and his friends as unexperienced and 12 year old have to go on a quest, he didn’t understand how they knew where they were going. So in the books the explantion for these are that the Gods find a place in countries that are great in that area and so this is the USA in this century. Percy has to go on a quest because Zeus thinks Percy stole the bolt on Posidon’s behalf so has to prove he didn’t and he has to clear his fathers name because the Gods cannot directly interfere. The show is boring because theres no action because they know everything. And as 12 year olds they shouldn’t know what every monster looks like in the real world. They figure it out after they step into the trap and we see them figuring out who the component is, based on the powers and traps they are presented with. Thats also when we see how Annabeth is smarter then all of them are. My bf said he didn’t like Annabeth’s portrayal cus she seems useless and doesn’t understand whys he has to be there.

I think the original tunnel of love scene showed the nature of the gods just fine. We saw that they don't really respect eachother and are more than willing to embarrass their family for revenge. The new scene just felt clunky and undermines the fact that the gods a. Aren't supposed to directly interfere with quests ( the trap was meant for other gods but he interfered by letting percy go on request. And b. Makes the idea that the gods don't ever really change seem wrong in context to the rest of the series. That scene really laid the ground work by making us go " man, the gods are really f*cked up" and towards the end of the series we were going " maybe Luke had some good points"

I think there is a lot of negative visualization in the fandom. It's ok that you didn't like some scenes or that some were different, but that doesn't make this show a bad show. Everyone is seeing the show as shit and overcriticize small things unnecessaryly. You can't expect the show to be 100% accurate. Expect changes.
