Something I noticed while doing research online is that the USB Out on the Yamaha MG10XU is 15dB quieter than the Stereo Out. Apparently Yamaha has acknowledged this to people asking them in customer support. I am using a Shure SM7B + Cloudlifter and noticed that the Monitor sound was reaching 0 on the mixer, but was 15dB too quiet when recording/using OBS. The solution to this for me was buying a 2x 1/4" to 1/8" cable, and routing from the Stereo Out ports on the mixer to the microphone jack on my PC. Same exact settings on the mixer and computer (except now Level Stereo knob was at unity), and it was 15dB louder, and sounding much better. Hopefully this helps anyone still struggling with being too quiet!

That isn't my experience at all. With a digital signal, zero is zero. If you have -18 on the console, you'll get -18 in your DAW. In my experience, people who complain about a quiet Yamaha MG10XU are simply not using enough gain.
@specops

@@kettnercreative Hello Please read this - I just checked and -18 on the console over USB does not come out to -18 ( at least for me in OBS meter) like many people have said the USB seems to be -10 db or so quieter for some reason. Can you try to look into this further and find out why Yamaha does this? It would be very helpful to see if these is a fix or why Yamaha chose to do this. Thanks for all the great content!

Hey guys just to follow up on this post in case it helps anybody - I figured out two important things: 1. 0 on the mixer is actually equal to somewhere around -18 in the digital software ( The reason I understand they do this is because most of the time you want your 0 to be around -18 in your digital because you need to leave some "headroom" in digital because of you go over 0 digital it will clip so this makes sense. So on the mixer I believe PEAK = 0 and 0 = around -18 or so in digital. The 2nd thing I noticed which GREATLY fixed my issue with the sound being about 10 db quitter when using the USB is that the Line out on my Gaming PC ( Asus motherboard) is actually Professional level Line out so instead of going into the -10 line on the mixer ( which was making the signal quitter because this is for non-pro equipment like your iphone etc) I just needed to go into channels 1 - 4 on the mixer because those are Pro Line level just like the output on my asus mobo so I now get the correct sound level it is 10 db louder. I hope this helps!

It's a common complaint of this board - you did a great job explaining each variable and the proper settings / techniques for the hardware - for those who still feel the signal is too low when recording into a DAW, try running "normalize" on the track (especially if the recording is clean to start with)

I inserted an external guitar boost pedal into the mixer(fx send) with a lot of output gain, so I apply the output signal from the boost pedal to the aux button of each channel on the mixer, this gives me more gain without too much noise and with appropriate signal level to the usb output. However, I agree that there should be a simple way to adjust the usb output signal on the mixer itself or via yamaha's own software.

Please consider the following. I've had this mixer for a while and I've learnt so much from you, so thanks. I'd like to share with you that the USB output from this mixer IS actually quiet, even with proper setup as in your video, but I think this may just be a Windows compatibility issue. You're using a Mac so your results are understandably different. I tried everything and it's still quiet. Ultimately the fix that worked for me (amazingly well) is to connect the mixer to the pc via an interface (I use the Presonus Audiobox with a DI box). Lastly, you seriously DO NOT need a cloudlifter with this mixer. I have the dynamite stick by SE and don't use it. Julian Klaus has a video demonstrating why it's not required with preamps like this. I hope to hear your comments on this. Thanks for the great content.

I own this mixer and have been recording live shows with it. My question is would you follow this exact same procedure for adding guitar, drums, keyboards, bass inputs, etc.? Would you want all of these separate sound sources to consistently hit the unity mark on the USB output, or would you need to compensate for additional sound sources by turning the gain/volume down slightly on all the channels to keep it from being too loud?

Hi! I have two questions. 1. Let's say I'm using an SM-57, I assume I wouldn't need a cloud lifter at all right? 2. If I use the EQ, turn on the mixers compression, and add a hall reverb, to my vocals or guitar, when I record via usb, will it also record the EQ, compression, and reverb? I read someone say that they had reverb on and only recorded a clean signal. Thanks in advance! Great video! :)

I've had this mixer forever... And I've had this problem forever! I even got a DBX 286s Preamp and processor. It does all the heavy lifting but the dang usb out is so quite on the mg10XU that even when I set me levels right at 0DB it comes in peakine at -18 dB before you start to hear distortion if you go much higher. This is a problem when I am streaming but also need to be heard on discord. I have tried using software to boost the input digitally for programs like discord but it's a pain and hard to monitor.

Hi I too going through the same problem. You have to increase the gain & volume to the peak level. The quality of USB output is always good compared to Line level input. So can we add a sound card like focusrite as intermediate input from Mixer to Laptop to enhance the usb output signal strength from Yamaha MG10XU

What about if you’re not going out through USB? I have a 10G on the way because I’m using my Focusrite and a DAW (Reaper). Same process basically? Level to zero on the Yamaha board then use the Focusrite to adjust peaks to about -18 to -12 within the DAW? After all, you wouldn’t want to hit zero within the DAW because then you’re clipping, right? Thanks!

Great Video! I have followed all these steps, but still need to boost about +5 in software in order to get the levels that I want in OBS when using USB I have noticed however that when I keep all the settings the same, but use Line-In to my PC, the volume is much higher (15db or so). Is there a reason that the Line-in would offer such a higher volume than the USB? I find myself using it over the USB input which is slightly annoying, because I bought the mixer mostly for its USB output!
@kettnercreative
@kettnercreative 3 года назад
If you need to boost the gain in OBS, I would just boost it on the channel strip instead (if you have the option). Line level of the mixer is boosted a little bit +4dBu so it makes sense that it's a bit louder. It's also effected by the master output (bottom right) so if you turn this up/down it will make a difference as well.
@DaveChurchill

@@kettnercreative Thanks for letting me know about the 4db line boost. I didn't know about that! I think after a bunch of testing, I'm probably going to end up returning this mixer and going with the Scarlett 2i2. I don't really need this many inputs for my use case of live-streaming, and I've heard nothing but amazing reviews for the preamp inside the Scarlett boxes. In your experience, would the Scarlett 2i2 be able to deliver higher volumes through USB than the Yamaha? I know the Yamaha is obviously more fully featured, but just in terms of input volume and quality I think the Scarlett may have it beat. I can do other processing and EQ in software

@@DaveChurchill If you're looking for a silver bullet with the Scarlett, I don't think you're going to find it. @Kettner Creative Thank you so much for the explanation! This information is helping me understand things a lot better. I have a couple more questions for you if you have time. If not, I understand! 1) The line out has +4db, which you mentioned before. So when I boost the gain so that the USB output matches the level of the line out, I notice that the USB sound on my PC has var less noise. Could this be because my motherboard sound card's line in is just noisier than the USB input? 2) I followed your exact instructions (in your streamer setup video) with an SM58, however I need to speak about 8 inches from the mic due to my desk setup. Because of this, I need more gain than you have in your setup video for USB output. When I have the mic in slot 1, and set Gain 1 and Levels 1 on the board both to 9/10, I still need about +5db in OBS to get to usable levels. However I also found that I could get more 'gain' on board by turning up each of the 3 EQ knobs equally. Do you recommend people use the EQ knob gain 'trick' or adding gain in software? 3) I may have to end up returning the Yamaha anyway, due to physical space requirements. Do you have a recommendation for smaller audio interfaces which offer similar db boost / usb output? 4) Is the +64db what you get from the Gain knob only, or is that the sum of Gain, Levels, and EQ knobs being turned to max?
@smurf902

Hi Jordan - quick question - so I have a Shure MV7X and I turned the levels up all the way and a bit of condenser. I can finally hear in my video camera recordings my vocals but the digital keyboard I have plugged in, I can hardly hear it at all, I have it plugged into my headphone jack on the piano and then plugged into the "left" line of line 9....I turned up all the levels but I still can hardly hear anything..do u think if I get the red and white wires and plug to the back instead it may help? I honestly can still get a decent recording because the mic picks up the ambient sound of the speakers from externally anyway, like it would an acoustic piano, but I'd like to make some nicer recordings through audacity where I can just have sound recordings....who knows tomorrow when I try that the levels might pick up better since it's not the phone, it's gonna be to my laptop and I can raise the level to that line on audacity..

I don't really want to lower the stereo knob since that will make my keyboard and instruments quiet then I would have to mess with their levels. to be on topic with this video, I ended up getting a Fethead by Triton Audio for my shure sm58 and it solved the 'too quiet' issue. it was cheaper than the cloud lifter too

Could another solution be connecting the Stereo Output to the computer with a Stereo 1/4 Jack to 3.5 Jack cable (if we are not using this solution for a minus mix) to have control over the Output volume?

Hello, I had a live stream of 4 musicians and had problems with the sound. The musicians have connected all microphones and instruments to their own mixer and leveled them for the room. My sound engineer got the line output via XLR on Zoom F4 and checked it with headphones. Then I have an XLR-USB adapter on my laptop with Wirecast Pro for livestream. In the live stream, the sound was partially overdriven and distorted with loud sounds. I have now bought a Yamaha MG10 XU, what is the best way to close the line input for livestream. 2 Question: Wireless microphones and MG 10 XU 3 Question: If I use different micros (with +48 V and without +48 V), there is only one + 48V switch for all 1-4 micros) 4 Question: Delay and MG10 XU for the various wireless microphones? Thank you in advance
@nikonmikon8915
@nikonmikon8915 3 года назад
to answer your question about the +48v, be sure to check the manufacturer suggestions about sending +48v to these microphones that do not use phantom power. The sm57 and sm58 both have transformers inside the handle (you can search google to see this) and this transformer will block DC voltage (48v). They are safe to use when 48v is activated for condenser microphones. I would check to make sure your microphones can handle 48v safely before turning it on.

I’ve been doing streaming with a live audience also. Last try, I had digital out just high enough (going into OBS, Win 10) by setting stereo out to the max, and turning the volume as low as it will go on my powered speakers. I don’t think this is a great solution, but I’m just a bit above novice level myself. Just doesn’t seem good to have anything set at maximum or minimum. No room for adjustment. But it worked, even though I’ve been told by others that the stereo out volume doesn’t control the USB out. Still experimenting…….

Not really. Most outboard preamps will output a line level signal. An inline preamp (Cloudlifter, Fethead, Dynamite, etc.) will output a mic level signal.

Can't we all just admit that the output levels on the mgxu mixers are too low? It is too low through usb, and it is too low through the main outs when running to powered speakers. I have been running sound for 30 years and have never seen a mixer that you had to turn up on every fader like this one. That's why all these people VVVV are having trouble. Can anyone recommend a mixer that is in the same price range that has a stronger, cleaner output on usb and mains?

You seem to counterdict yoruself. First yo usay that the Master knob has nothing to do with the USB input, but yet you need to hit that 0db meter on the right. I cannot get to that 0db meter without turning up the monitor know, which you said had nothing to do with the USB input.. I still struggle with this and didn't find this video any helpful this far. I'm still struggling and can't find a way to get good enough output volume for my forthcoming Zoom concert..
@kettnercreative
@kettnercreative 3 года назад
Hi Kim, Great question. Although the master level doesn't change the USB volume, it does activate the meter so you can see what's going on. This is why it's important to set it to the triangle, so you can accurately see what your current level is from your microphone. If you set it above/below the triangle, you won't see an accurate representation of what you're sending to your computer. If you need more volume, turn up the gain.

@@kettnercreative Hi again Jordan.. I was wondering if you're suffering from crackling noises from this mixer? I have made sure that none of the tracks are running hot or even remotely near limit, yet when I turn up the headphone-amp knob aswell as/or the MG10XU headphone knob, the sound starts crackling when the band plays together.. It's like we all have to run our headphones at low volumes for the crackling to disappear.. Is this a normal issue with cheaper end mixers? I run a mic on the left channel, then my Kemper stereo on track 2 and 3 with XLR. Gain is set to zereo on these two.. I was thinking that maybe three XLR cables were overloading somehow, I don't know. Strange that I even get sound from track 2 and 3 with zero gain added on the knobs though
