It doesn't matter how inexpensive a board is, when you fix it it's a small victory. Well done Richard. Now when the 16X Pcie slot doesn't work, who's to blame?

Learnt a lot from this video. Thanks. Bought a load of parts from marketplace and having issues getting dual channel ram. RAM is brand new and works in A2 B2. It won’t POST in either 1 slot. Found bent pins in cpu socket yesterday. Will have a look at the actual dimm slots pins when I get a chance and try and sort it out.

I'm curious why you do not use compressed air to clean the dust off boards and from insides of slot sockets, rather than using soap and water and a brush. Perhaps because compressed air (in cans) is more expensive where you are? Normally I would shudder to think of washing my boards this way, but admittedly it does seem to work for you and is effective.

Yeah - you need ultra fine tools for this type of work. You can get them from three different fields of work 1. an electronics tweezer kit, 2. a complete surgical grade stainless steel facial blackhead removal tool kit or 3. Surgical grade stainless steel dental tool kits . Bonus: There are even micro-fine crochet hooked knitting needles that can be used to pull up those bent pins (in the more severe cases). It would be cool if they also made a micro-fine 90 degree turned tip pliers tool - to press down and flatten out the more severely mangled contact pins - but I haven't seen one with that tiny a tip yet.

Hi Richard, I have a ga-z77x-d34 with an i5-3470, it has 4 ram slots 3 slots work with 8gb ram giving me 24gb but it will not start with 4 ram cards in at all, always starts fine with 2 or 3 in it. Any ideas? the slot not working is ddr3-3.

I have a new MSI Mag b550 pro tomahawk wifi board and I thought I had a bad stick of RAM at first so I ordered 2 more. Its also two beside rach other b1 and b2. I could probably figure it out eventually even if i have to replace some components but its under warranty so im not touching it. If I put the ram in like it's supposed to go I get a red CPU light and no boot. I'm going to talk to MSI today and see what they say. I just hate having to tear my rig all the way back apart after I just got it all looking how I wanted. If MSI can't give me a answer I guess I'll send it back but I'm definitely going to look at my CPU very well. It's not a cheap one a ryzen 7 5800x but wouldn't a diagnostic test show if it's a RAM slot issue or a CPU issue. Also I did put a little too much thermal paste when I assembled it so some may have gotten to the pins. Im also going to yry my old cpu a ryzen 5 3600 and see if it will boot then before i tear it all apart and send it back.

Oh forgot to mention that a sewing needle works great for fixing ram slot pins as well as for straightening cpu socket and cpu pins. I’ve done many board and cpu recoveries using a needle and a jewelers flat head screwdriver 😀

I have a board with a dead men slot but no pin damage like you had, so I’d assume it’s a north bridge issue?
@LearnElectronicsRepair
@LearnElectronicsRepair 3 года назад
Probably that or a broken BGA ball. Could be a bent pin in the CPU socket - some motherboards have the memory controller in the CPU so the NB is not involved. Could also be a pull up resistor maybe
@mesterak

@@LearnElectronicsRepair ok I will consider those. If you would like to know, I can share the details of the board, my analysis, etc. I’d really like to get the ram slot working as it is a good Intel board to have.

The graphics card must have come with a short profile bracket, you can order a fullsize bracket with the right I/O for cheap. It's a Radeon HD 4350 512MB DDR2. I've bought one of those brackets and the quality was quite good, I thought it would be that cheap metal that bends easily but it's not.

I have an issue. My ram would only work in single channel . Recently I wanted to get another ram stick and switch to dual channel. I put the sticks in slot 2 and 4 and when i turn on the pc the rgb on both ram sticks light up but there is no display on my monitor. Once i remove the other new ram stick, my pc works perfectly fine. Both ram sticks are same exactly model, speed etc. Ive tried resetting bios. Nothing works. Pls hep

Try in slots 1&3 Check for any bent pins in the CPU socket Otherwise could be a bad connection between the CPU socket and RAM slot on one or more a signals - possibly also problem with PCH/ICH but hard to say as you didn't mention your motherboard model , CPU or chipset

I've come into ownership of an old HP Pavilion HPE that's obviously had it's MB swapped for a Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H LGA1155. Came with an i7-2600s CPU, AMD Radeon 6570, and oddly 12gb of DDR3 ram (2x SKhynix Korea 4gb chips unchanneled in slot 1&3 and 1x Samsung 4gb in slot 2. I purchased a matching Samsung chip and attempted to match both pairs up in channels A&B, but no matter what's in slot four? It beeps non stop and boot loops. I've tried everything I know, and attempted some I don't (flashed bios to 10 from 4! That was a complete nightmare!). Anyways, after many hours of swearing? I finally got Channel A slots (1 & 2) matched up with the 2 Samsung chips, but now I'm stuck with one of the original Korean chips left over meant for slot 4?! Only way it would boot. Slot 4 is just beeping and not cooperating no matter what I did! So naturally, I closed it up an went off to have a smoke and brandy. Ha! Now, I'd obviously like to get it to take both different pairs of matched RAM together in A&B channels properly for a total 16gb, or eventually even the max of 32gb as I do Audio/Video work, but I'm wondering if having that 3rd 4gb chip in it for now is potentially doing more harm to performance than it's 4gb's is worth? As for Ram slot 4?!! I have no clue! Is it perhaps a CAS latency or timing issue?! Voltage?! Am I going mad? Probably. (shakily pours second brandy) Ha! I'm stumped at the mo'. Any advice offered would be greatly appreciated. Cheers from across the Atlantic! (takes big sip and lights cigarette)

6:05 A GeForce FX card with an HDMI port? Nope. 13:09 The original Intel “dual core” CPU was actually the Pentium D from 2005. That ☝🏻 CPU is a “Pentium Dual Core” from 2006 which is basically an early Core2Duo with less cache. Compared to the Pentium D, they’re actually fairly capable CPU’s. 18:12 Sometimes using a test hard drive with Windows 10 preinstalled will result in a BSOD but 99% of the time it’s a driver issue and restarting into safe mode will sort that out (If it’s caused by a hardware fault, of course that won’t work)

Hi Jon - thanks for the info. I'm not an expert on the history of retro hardware as you can see, though I always find info like you just added here to be interesting and useful. I do find a lot of older PCs with Geforce FX so it was just a guess, and as you point out, an uneducated one :-) I eventually figured out what it was. Yeah if you watched other of my videos I have the 'Test rig' Hard Drive from my GPU repair/test rig (which is an LGA775) and I use it on a wide range of motherboards that I test, and like you say, almost all of the time it works. And on this one it didn't. Actually that Windows 10 now has a lot of drivers installed as I used it to test so many boards and I always load drivers during the test process. It isn't a problem though if it gets screwed up eventually as I can just reinstall windows again. The only software on there really is Speccy, Furmark, a couple of old 3DMark, and a couple of HDD test/recovery/clone apps. And they are all free downloads. I use SDI (Snappy Driver Installer) to load driver from a 64Gb USB stick.
@jonchapman6821
@jonchapman6821 3 года назад
@@LearnElectronicsRepair Yeah I have a similar setup of an old SSD with Windows 10 installed along with a handful of testing and benchmarking programs and of course, Snappy Drivers, that really is a superbly useful bit of software! 👌🏻
