Thanks for watching! Please consider subscribing to my new channel here: www.youtube.com/@jamminpcs. I'm trying to move the easier hardware stuff there so that I can focus on the more in depth troubleshooting and diagnostic videos here :)
I had the Q key stop working during the middle of a 48 hour game jam (48 hours to make a video game), Took it off to try and fix it, but because of the time stress I had to just put it off. Now that its over, I googled, found this video and in seconds everything is perfect! Thank you
You, sir, are a lifesaver. As with a lot of people, money is pretty tight, so I can't just buy a new keyboard...not to mention you say that doing that weakens the computer. Luckily, the little plastic tabs on the white thing weren't broken, so I could put it back together....after a while. I was born with tremors so doing little handiwork like this is really difficult for me. But...I managed to get my key back on. The whole mess started because I accidentally got...something in the cracks of the key. So, I pried it off...and thought I broke it. Luckily, your video saved me a lot of trouble. Thanks for the video.
Thank you man! I was searching for it and kind of depressed because I thought that the laptop keycaps are not removable and I need to see some technic service just to fix 1 key that isn't working properly! You made my day.
@@tocracked2373 This video is a tutorial on how to replace a key. If your keys are not working but are not mechanically broken, troubleshoot them as seen here; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wqrchfpdJ_w.html.
Legend...worked straight away first time...thank you my " sssssss" key is back baby.......was so small and finiky, not sure i could have worked it out on my own...so great vid and thank you.
keyboard key 4 one of the big clips unclipped by itself and the key got stuck , I open and one of the clips side wasn't on the hinges but when trying to put it on it doesn't fit. The top hinge is bigger than the lower.
Thank you so much! I had grit under one of my keys (turned out to be a bit of mechanical pencil lead) that was making it feel weird and not always register, got it out, this is such a relief. When I popped it out, the inner part of the retainer clip came with the keycap (mine is shaped as bit different and i didn't know where the edge was to hold it down) and I screamed at each click, I fully thought I'd broken it but I popped them back together and everything is fine :) It probably would've been funny to watch :P
Great video! Concise & to the point 👍I was afraid I'd snap the plastic thing you mentioned, but I didn't. However, I broke a plastic hook that's part of the key lol I'm glad I was able to fix this myself.
i broke my w keys' retainer clip so i did surgery and took one out of from the right bracket key, ] , and now my key works like a charm. although now i have a naked key 💀 edit: i forgot to say thank you for this presice breakdown of what not to do, and what to do, you got a sub, a like, and a happy customer C:
Thanks a lot. On my X1 Yoga (2017) all that needed to be done to repair one key was remove one hair, after removing the key cap, according to your screwdriver method. So the tricky (white) part did not even need to be disassembled.
This totally helped! I spilt a drink on my keyboard, and I only wanted to know what not to break. I successfully cleaned it out, and learned a bunch of new things about keyboards!
THANK YOU SO MUCH OMG, MY L KEY HAD FALLEN APPART WHILE I WAS TRYING TO CLEAN IT AND I USED THIS AS A VISUALE TO PUT THE TWO PLASTIC PEICES BACK TOGETHER AND POP THEM INTO PLACE( they keep slipping but i eventually got it )
I broke one of the plastic things and the key is slightly leaning forwards now. But from all the keys I removed and clean, only one mistake was actually pretty good for a first time! So satisfying to clean the keyboard btw, do recommend :)
Bro Love You ❤ U just saved my life Thank you so much. Guys literally my hands were shaking while doing this as it was the btn I use the most (The 'v' letter key). U r just amazing subbed...
broke the retainer before i watched this video so in the end i had to sacrifice my tilde key but at least this vid helped me properly transfer it 😭😭 ty!!
Thanks for this video! I have successfully cleaned out the gunk beneath my arrow keys that was making them not register, and got them back on without incident. However, you might want to let people know that at least on Lenovo Y700 ideapads, the plastic bits beneath the narrower keys on the right side of the keyboard (the arrow and number pad keys) are mounted sideways compared with the rest of them, and in this case, the screwdriver needs to come in from above or below, rather than from the side.
Hey, I have an Ideapad, and my A key falls off when I press it near the top of it, and it brings out the white plastic with it too, im not sure if the problem is in the small metal bits that hold the white plastic flaps down?
@@nicklassthr5147 If the Retainer Clip is falling out then its either an issue with the metal keyboard pins being bent out of place, the Retainer Clip being damaged, or the Retainer Clip not being installed properly.
Thank you so much!!!!! I am a mom and my teen son told me he had a dead key, fixed it and it worked. Did as you said. Saved me from paying someone else to do an easy job!
The i key on my brand new ideapad is slightly slanted forward, it's barely noticeable, but I'm too afraid of breaking the key tbh haha. Your explanation is super clear though, so if (and when) I try to remove it I'm definitely gonna use this vid, thanks.
Thanks so much for your video. You explain things clearly it makes sense now. My shift key cap cracked in half and I superglued it, but it won't fit now. I did figure out how to remove and replace the retainer clip. I guess I need to buy a new cap because mine is not fitting back after the superglue job.
Thank you! My w key has been acting up, so i tried to remove it to manually repair it i messed up edit: nvm i have royally messed up. i accidentally broke apart the 2 plastic pieces do you know if i can bring them together again? (for clarification, the 2 individual pieces are fine, they are just not together
thanks for the tutorial. a suggestion for future improvements, your camera angle was such that your hand got in the way of what you were doing when you removed the key initially, and also to some extent when removing the white piece beneath. I think you just slipped the screw driver beneath the middle of the key but I can't tell for sure.
If the key assembly is not installing correctly, its either due to a component being damaged and needing to be replaced or a component not being orientated correctly. I would disassemble the key as seen here in this video and inspect for damage. If there is no damage, install the key. If there is damage, replace the key. Would you like help locating a key? If so, what is the brand and model for your computer?
broo thank you very much i have been struggling; the only thing i did is break apart the white 2 pieces out of together and had to put it together then put it in the places
I cleaned my lower direction key (it had been constantly pressing itself) although I used a kitchen knife, I was still able to get the dirt out. Thank you for the guidance! keep making more videos
The Q key popped off my wife's laptop. With your video, I was able to get it back on. However, when pressed, the letter doesn't respond. I get nothing. You don't mention any other tiny parts that may have gotten lost. What do I look for now?
If your Key Cap is not clicking down in place correctly, it is most likely due to the Retainer Clip not being properly installed or damaged. Remove the Cap and inspect for damage or that its not laying down flush and properly snapped in itself. Compare to another Clip if needed by removing another Cap.
@@user-hf6gk7vk3t Because they key can usually not be reinstalled with the Retainer Clip and the Key Cap still attached to each other, you would have to separate them as seen here, using a small flat pry tool.
Thank you so, so, so much for this. Before I found your video, I managed to get the keys off I was trying to swap, but separated the two pieces of the retaining clips in the process. After a lot of frustration and swearing, I watched your video and it helped get it all put back together. Getting the retainers put back together was the hardest part, but once I saw how it all snapped back together it was easy. Thanks!
Great video! Was able to help me get my a key back on earlier a couple months ago. However it just fell off again and this time it won’t stay in using the same technique. Whenever I press on the top of the key it falls off again. I can normally pop it back on if I press down on the bottom but it is annoying as I normally play video games and it’s not exactly the easiest thing to do every time you want to move left. I’ve tried fixing my hand placement but it hasn’t seemed to work that well. Is something broken? If so, would replacements maybe be available somewhere? Or am I maybe just putting it back on incorrectly? Thanks.

if your rubber string came off I don't recommend using strong glue since it can make the rubber be hard, I tried super glue now it's a bit harder to press, Also thanks you very much I had 3 keys falling apart every time I press them untill I watched this video.
thx for the video! From you experience, would you say exchanigng single keys could help if specific keys dont work after liquid was spilled over the keyboard or would you have to exchange the whole keyboard? I am talking about the very same model as in the video.
It would depend on what is wrong with the keys or keyboard. The keys are usually not electronic parts. Just mechanical. If they need to be fixed, they would usually feel damaged and they would physically not move as they should. In that case, they would need to be disassembled and cleaned. If the keys feel fine, then its most likely a keyboard issue. Try unplugging the keyboard ribbon cable at both ends and cleaning it, then plugging it back in. If that fails to help, you may need replace the keyboard.
@@PC_Monkey thx again for your quick and extensive reply. Since the keys themself work pretty fine, I guess I will have to send to notebook to Lenovo for repair. I have seen videos on how to exchange (or even reach...) the keyboard and it is definitely above my skill level.
Hey, should these two plastic parts be unseperable? I tried to clean one of the buttons of my laptop these morning without knowing the proper way of removing it, so I took it out and in the process plastic parts got seperated, I can't instal them back to their place rn.What can I do?
Yes, sometimes they come apart :( You can see how to put them back in the last half of this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vVA-nSROSKk.html
Dont feel bad. Keys are VERY easy to break :( I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.replacementlaptopkeys.com. If you cannot find a loose key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key from there.
Ive been trying for half an hour but i cant get the keycap to snap back in, any tips? edit: its back in nvm it just took time :D thx for the video btw it helped a lot!

What if the retainer clip (white plastic pieces) and the rubber center piece are all broken or missing? Is there a way to replace those components for just a key or two, and not have to swap out the entire keyboard?
Remember to check the FAQ's on my videos! It could save you time getting an answer to common questions :) If any components are broken, you may have to replace them. Ahhhhh thanks mate. Mine was the 2 pieces was separated but I was able to attach them together and bring it back thanks to you. I learned something NEW again yay
The physical actions of pushing the metal clips into the tabs was not shown very well but we could sort of imagine what you were doing based on the explanation so it still helped. In the future you may want to put the viewers need to learn slightly above your physical comfort while taking the action. I just don't know how else to say it without sounding rude. Really appreciate the video.
Every keyboard is different and every hinge clip is different. Im my opinion, very little can be gained from seeing the exact way im doing it. Relying on doing it the exact same as me would be a hinderance rather than a help. The explanation is better as viewers can apply it to their specific key as it wont look exactly like mine. Thanks though :)
