Drill out the hole to a larger hold then get a wood dowel rod and and glue it into the hole. After it's dried, cut the dowel rod flush on both sides and you and new wood to screw into.

Another quick and effective option is to drill larger holes and then get some wooden dowels that are the same size as those holes. Put some PVA wood glue around the dowels and then hammer them into the holes. You can then drill new holes.

A small sized plastic, disposable cake decorating bag works better for forcing any kind of putty or filler into large holes like in the third solution he gives. Cheap, clean, and easy, and keeps the filler off the rest of the board.

Great idea. You can also put the putty in a small zip lock bag and cut a corner off of the bag and use with the same principle.
@multibusa
@multibusa 3 года назад
@@davidneumann6231 Exactly. Trying to get the filler into a hole with a plastic spreader can trap air in the hole making for a weakened threaded plug. I’ve especially noted this when filling a largish hole in skirting board or whatever. Pushing in the filler with a spreader just traps air and is fiddly to remove at best without sanding flush and putting in a second coat. Both the icing bag and zip lock bag would work very well, however I don’t tend to have an icing bag on site with me. I’ve just used any old plastic bag I can find and cut a corner off about 3 x the size of the amount of filler to be used, job done, plus at no cost.

Great ideas here. Didn’t have matches, chopsticks, toothpicks and didn’t want to drive into town. Cut 2 inch long by 1/4 inch pieces off the end of the longer style paint stirrers. Sharpened the end, put some glue on it and drove one in each drilled out hole. Worked great.

All good ideas and clearly work. However you might not always have tooth picks or plastic wall plugs with you. Nevertheless, working on site be it re hanging a door with enlarged screw holes or any other fixture you may be trying to re-fix, it’s most likely that you will have a chisel or a utility knife with you. My favourite go to solution is to cut a 3 sided wedge from the corner of a scrap piece of wood, cutting along the grain, not across, about 3/16’ longer than the screw. I then cut the 3/16’ off the bottom tapered point. Then [without enlarging the hole] I poke a bit of wood glue in the hole and hammer in the tapered piece of wood into the screw hole until it won’t go in any further, then cut off the protruding end flush. Then use an awl to make a hole to get the screw started. The tapered plug is such a tight fit that it becomes part of the wooden frame, or whatever pieced wood your trying or repair. I have yet to find a stronger way of dealing with a stripped/enlarged hole. I’ve used matchstick’s in the past which work the same as wooden tooth picks at a pinch.
