Man four years later and this still works. Thanks a lot dude. The stutter was bad enough that it was a huge distraction even with my brand new 7900xt. After this tweak its buttery smooth like it should be.
@@nightraven8420 I have I7 7700k and 2070 super and can't get it to launch with DX12. The same file that he edits in the video above the line that he types. It says kSettingsAPI_DX12 You can try to switch that DX12 to Vulkan (if it isn't already). If that doesn't work I think a bios update for your mobo might help from what I've read about AMD CPUs.
@@jeremiahl3529 it defaults to vulkan and since I never launched the game I tried setting it to dx12 and it didnt help so deleted the folder so that it would reset and yeah
My game crashed at this one point on the same mission everytime, I tried playing through it about 5 times and it always crashed. This video clearly fixed the crashes for me as now it hasn’t crashed once. Thank you so much, thought I would have to wait for another update
Bro i have problem with unexpectedly errors inside the game when i mostly go to towns or some quests does this setting from video fix this problem?? Tell me yes plz

3 years later, this still seems to be the solution. I only got to test for 30 minutes this morning, but during that time the screen only stuttered twice. Otherwise it was smooth as butter. Thank you!
Didn't just fix my stuttering but fixed my crashes. I had to replay a mission 6 times because it would crash on the same spot(that spot being a damn cutscene at the end of the mission) and a few other times in other missions as well. Since I've done this, it hasn't crashed at all. Thank you for this.
This worked for me, changed the settings in game and then in the file and all of a sudden it was smooth gameplay without crashes to desktop. Thanks Joker!
Makes no difference for me I stutter every 10 fucking seconds and it's really frustrating, the storyline has been completely ruined for me because of this shit
OMG BRO, YOU ARE A LIFE SAVIOR, I GET ONLY 1-2 SOUND STUTTERS EVERY 2-3 MINUTES, BEFORE THAT I COULDN'T EVEN START THE GAME WITH VULKAN ENABLED... YOU ARE THE MAN BRO IF I COULD I'D GIVE YOU 1K LIKES MORE
@@AdiiS Honestly GTA IV was a decent port around patch 1.0.2.0 up to 1.0.5.0 where PC's at the time could easily max it out till patch 1.0.6.0 which introduced the new shadow system which caused performance to basically go down the shitter what we have now.
For me RDR2 freezes form 5 seconds every 2 minutes or so. People on the internet: Use DX12, Vulkan is the issue. Other people on the internet: USe Vulkan, DX12 is the issue. Me: Both options doesn't fix it!!!!111
@@Xist-Mob The gpu is enough for this game on 1080p still solid but the cpu 4core it very minimum nowadays at least 6core you'll be ok with all the games 2019 & 2020 however this game surprisingly is not a heavy cpu more GPU intead, either way you should wait the next patch for optimization its a bad port dude
@@KenneXS pretty much the same setup as Xist's. Never had any issues with other games (more or less). RDR 2 itself runs smoothly on Middle settings, if it wasn't for these damns freezes. So yes, really hope for a patch or something.
I'm a owner of a 7800X3D and a 7900 XTX, thanks to this video I can finally play with Vulkan without crashing at specific points in the game (like Valentine near the stable), this fix should be posted everywhere. Thank you so much!
Just to be clear, If your GPU uses Vulkan then use that otherwise DirectX12 would be the preferred option. Some GPU's prefer Vulkan & some prefer directX
Joker Productions : that's because AMD-s GCN architecture has a true Mantle API = Vulcan API = DX 12 API support on a hardware level with true ASYNC capability included whereas Nvidia GTX and RTX cards still only emulate low quantities of ASYNC on a software driver level. And in this game as well as in Battlefield V (which is an Nvidia sponsored raytracing game) the 5700XT is faster than the RTX 2080 in 1080p and 1440p on Ultra details :).
for DX12 API with Windows 10 1903 (or newer) don't forget to doing this: 1. Search "Apps & Features" 2. Click "Optional Features" 3. Click "+ Add a feature" 4. Click "Graphics Tools" > "Install" 5. Relaunch game in DX12 This may avoid you to getting crash. Somehow as default; Microsoft not installed some proper DX12 files library that might using with RDR2.
mostly when im coming into town the game crashes and when you doing missions you mostly end in town .. so i do whole mission and before the end BOOM crash ... i do not understand why it crashes so much when pc is ok but i belive the fix will come
It works so far, thanks a lot. Ive been tyin everything. Appreciate it Edit : the problem is back and i have decided to stop playing red dead redemption 2.
The stutters weren’t the only problem I had with Vulkan but now DX12 crashes like crazy after the latest update. So frustrating, lol. When it does play though, it plays like a dream. PC just takes this game to a whole other level.
Through Rockstar Games Launcher, find Red Dead Redemption 2 and open 'Launch Arguments'. On Epic Games Store, go to Settings/Manage Games then 'Additional Command Line Arguments'. Then, add -USEALLAVAILABLECORES -high. That solved the DX12 crashes for me. Let me know if it helps you
This is gold - was looking for 3 days for fixes, tried about 20 of them, this finally stop the game exited unexpectedly crashes which I had every 10 minutes of gameplay on 5700 XT. Thanks partner, gonna share
Why the hell is this still an hidden option in 2024? That just completely fixed the frame pacing issues i had with vulkan. I can't believe found the video just now. Sh*t gave me such an headache. I thought i was going crazy.
It's March but it helped me now. I had previously nvidia GPUs and switched to RX 5700 yesterday and instantly encountered terrible stuttering in this game which didn't have place on nvidia GPUs. Enabling Async compute fixed it. Thanks
Thank you so much this has seemed to work perfect for me so far. After so much searching for a solution this fixed all problems within seconds. All settings on ultra and still runs like a dream. Your a legend😊
Plot Twist -- Joker's barber is actually Lisa Su and she drops him the daily knowledge with his fresh cuts. Also I tested this with an Nvidia card and it decreased my performance by around 10%. No surprise there just thought someone might be curious.
If you have the latest Nvidia Turing cards, then Async compute will benefit you, cause the Nvidia's latest cards support those features, previous generation cards based on Maxwell and Pascal might suffer in performance cause they don't support Async compute at hardware level. All AMD cards using the GCN/RDNA architecture support this feature and that's the reason why AMD cards will benefit more from this feature than their Nvidia counterparts.
So I bought this game back in September. Finished it with no problems. But then after their November update, it lags and stutters during town missions. How do I fix this?! PS4 version
When this game first launched there were two type of Pc gamers, ones who could actually play the game smooth and comfy, and ones who couldnt even get the game launched. I was one of the luckiest to get to play the game smoothly enough until i finished it. after i finished the game, rockstar came up with un update for those who had the issues, and as a result of that, we ended up having terriblle performance than those who eventually got theirs game launched.
This helped me a ton! I have the rtx 2070 with i7 8700k and this tweak helped me with the stuttering. I used to have some stuttering every now and then but now its all gone ! Thank you 🙏
THANKS! this helped a lot. I was getting stable 90-100fps but the game was all choppy but after turning on this settings the game feels so much better and smoother!
I have a feeling we'll have a launcher made by the community soon which will include all the options not listed in the in-game option. Kinda like what Modders did for Skyrim. It's ridiculous how many options there are unlisted, who knows what else they have.
I can always rely on you for a video that will fix issues in games that I play, just wanted to say thank you and if you ever wanted music for future stuff I can supply I do it for my day job, all the best
I watched the side by side multiple times I don't notice any hitching in the actually game play. Yeah the graph sets your mind at ease, but I don't see a difference. Shit I remember when you didn't need a graph to see "hitching" or "micro stuttering" like when I used to run Nvidia cards in SLI. Man that was a pain. Ended up disabling one card in many games.
Bad frame times can still ruin the experience, especially in a game where you would want to aim with your mouse. It will be less noticeable on high framerates, but everyone doesn't have that high framerates to begin with. So for someone running the game with a budget card at barely 40-50fps, or someone going for high resolution with high settings, this issue will be far worse. Also, if you are used to playing with good frame times, then you are just going to notice when they go bad. Watching a 60fps video is of course not going to show what bad frame times at 80fps look like, and even then it's also about how the game controls feel. And you won't need a graph to notice it's messed up.
Dismissive drive-by posting in a sensitive topic. Thanks for the info. . I now understand the theoretical basis. I still wonder how that specific graph translates to real world performance. I’ve been gaming for a long time so I’m naturally skeptical of what really is noticeable and need to be concerned about. . I suffered from hitching before, which was also no noticeable over RU-vid. SLI mess.
That's actually one of the biggest issues with gameplay videos on RU-vid. So many gamers record footage with an uncapped framerate meaning that it all looks bad anyway. If he had capped the FPS to 60 on both you would have most likely noticed one being smoother than the other.
Thank you for this tip! Amazing solution! I was getting pissed with this stuttering issue and when I changed the value to true it really fixed the issue. PS: I am using a RTX 2070super, then not only this fix works for AMD cards, but also maybe for some NVIDIA ones as well
Works for me as of march 2023 on a GTX 1660 ti running on the dx12 api. It might work for you, might not if the cause of stuttering is faulty hardware but it's worth a try. I have not noticed any changes in hardware utilisations nor a change in FPS though I do play 60 capped.
Thank you so much! I have a gtx 1080 and this damn game has been running at 20 fps on low settings. Now its running at 43 fps on high. Its not 60 but its still great!
Dude thanks soo much, I'm running this on an etc 3050 4GB laptop with digital foundry Xbox one x settings and even on dx11 the stability was far from ideal but after doing what you said I can't believe it and for once vulkan isn't saying out of memory anymore to, combined with the 32gb ram upgrade I plan on making this week (currently 16GB) and I will have a great time playing this evening at 1080p on my LG C3, thanks subscribed!

@@teksupreme5063 I just got rid of DX12 and switched to Vulkan. The stuttering is a little less, plus I can actually play on fullscreen. It also hasn't crashed since.
it works ! i ve been trying different ways to stop stuttering, programm lasso and bes included, but nothing helps. Now i can walk into valentine and play smoothly(i5 7500 1060 6 gb 16 ). Thank you!
They were too incompetent to optimize the game and make sure it can actually run on the hardware in their own system requirements. Rumor is that Rockstar India did the PC port. No wonder it's a fucking mess. Full of bugs, broken still crashing and they haven't said anything about a performance patch and it's been 5 days already, nearly a week.

Saw this fix on the Sapphire channel. I also used a frame cap with RTSS, and its been smooth sailing since. Haven't had a single issue with crashing though.
Thank you very much for sharing it! you have solved my problem, it totally works, I could notice a BIG difference by enabling this option now I can finally enjoy this masterpiece without crashing or stuttering, life saver!
Confirm! i5 4670K, 16Gb, GTX 1070, async computer works for my on DX12, testing the in-game benchmark and now is stuttering free, I try roll back to vulkan but have strutters like crazy and 100% CPU load on towns dkw, textures on ultra 16x, everything else on high gets 40fps +/-! Thanks joker! Now gonna play the game lock to 30fps stuttering free like on a XboxOneXSUPER lol
All textures on Ultra with 40 fps? You choose DirectX12 instead on Vulkan and enabled the async? And you have a GTX 1070? If so, I'm going to try this.
@@ABC-in2le yep, the benchmarks was stuttering free but gameplay it's the same, random stutters in all areas, maybe it's the 4cores doom... Vulkan give me so many error, texture flickering and so much strutters, try and see if it works for u!
i think that if you make any changes ingame settings after you edit this xml. the true will go false again. maybe you have to make this file read only so it never change back but you wont be able to make any graphics setts ingame.
@supralex1 I've tried everything that is a supposed work around to get the game working and still nothing. This has to be the worst game launch I've myself experienced
On directx 12 "volumentric lighting" has a crazy impact, as well as the water physics are broken. Im on i7 7700 3.6ghz 32gb ram 2 -970evo 500gb 1070ti overclocked 2099mhz core 4476 mhz memory
Sup Tony the biggest impact for me is SS reflections, water physics, and the object draw distance. System is r5 1600 3.9 GTX 980 ti OC @ 1440mhz, 16gb 3200 RAM. Play at 1080 with mostly high settings average around 67fps in game benchmark. DX12 crashes (no surprise there..only game I've had no crashes with it is Metro Exodus after a certain patch) Vulkan runs fine and around 5-8% better than DX 12. I have volumetric lighting on high both in the main settings and advanced. SS reflections look fine on medium compared to high so I compromised there.
Changing that system.xlt file with async compute was UNBELIEVABLE!!! i am now running Ultra everything (except reflections) on 2k at 50fps average and no more than 40min! Im kinda blown away honestly
All you guys with the game freezing try adding a line "-cpuLoadRebalancing" Into your Rockstar Louncher RDR2 settings, it worked for me but I'm still getting random crashes to desktop :(
@@Miker6s follow him and repeat what he does in the video. Then turn off the motion blur (and V sync too if you're ok with that) in game graphics settings

Can you please do a video on best settings for 1060 6gb? I think most of the people including me and a couple of my friends have a 1060 6gb gfx card and don't know which settings are best for that card! Right now, I'm playing in high balanced settings with 40-60 fps
So... I do have the problem that I have a stable Framerate (most of the time ~ 70 - 80 FPS) but after a few minutes the framerate goes suddenly down to ~15 FPS for a few seconds. That's the case since the release of the game on two PCs with two different graphic cards (2070 Super, RX 5700 XT), no matter if I choose DX12 or Vulkan. I am wondering on which systems R* has tested the PC version of this game. I could also imagine that they didn't have even tested it, if I think about all the bugs that this game has. Hopefully they'll fix them in the near future, if not, I guess that it will be their second baddest PC port already. I've of course tried the method that you have shown in the video, but unfortionally it has only reduced the framedrops.
@@rizhateuku5058 Sadly I couldn't fix it. But the game had so many bugs anyway, that I've stopped playing it some months ago. I don't think that R* has anything fixed yet.
