Half life Alyx easy FIX!
Okay this is a solution for most people who haven't had a problem with the game before, and than all of a sudden it started glitching , and stuttering, causing us to have VR motion sickness.
My PC
CPU i3 9100F
GPU Nvidia Geforce 1660 Super
16 GB Ram
HDD and i got no SSD cause it doesn't make any difference in gameplay
VR is an HTC Vive Cosmos Elite Kit
Things that didn't work for me:
Copy and paste this into the game's startup command
-console -vconsole +vr_fidelity_level_auto 0 +vr_fidelity_level 3
Reinstalling the game
Reinstalling windows and everything else
Downloading Geforce experience
updating all GPU CPU Motherboard drivers
Messing around with other apps (either in windows system settings, or just task manager)
Also i'm pretty sure messing around in major system files just made everything worse!
Steam VR and your room setup grid interferes with the game somehow. It is some kind of overlay issue, but what i still don't understand is that why was this perfect before, and now it's just broken unless you follow my instructions ( even that is not the perfect solution, but it is deffinitely an easy fix, and lets you play the game flawlessly again ).
Here is me completley bad at the game since i forgot all the controlls in the past 7 months
But it's working great, flawless 60Fps HD stream with a bunch of stuff on in the background, and me streaming it live while recording. Just another proof that it is not a hardware issue but some BG task going wrong!

I tried setting Nvidia Control Panel Settings, Windows Virtual Memory allocation, reinstalled drivers, running Steam in Admin Mode, turning down textures. The game would play fine till I would restart or load a second time and then, craptastic. And this is in 2022 with a PC I made last October with a Core I7 11th Gen, 32 gigs DDR4, and an RTX 3070. Thank you so much! I played it for the first time today for over an hour and just reloaded games for fun to watch it actually work the way it should.

When it happens I put the headset cycle sleep mode really quickly and that seems to reset the overlay. I think it has to do with the refresh rate of the overlay matching the game your in. I think there is some issue with data priority when the link is saturated. In reality it may be that the overlay always takes priority but doesn't always hand it back. Thanks for fix.

The default chaperone distance is 70cm because it's the average lenght of a stretched arm. The virtual walls appears relative to your controllers' position. Which means that if you play a fighting game like Gorn where you might throw punches, if you see the virtual wall holding the controllers to your chest for instance (imagine a boxing stance), it means that you WILL hit your wall (and break your controllers) if you punch. The chaperone set at 70cm saved my controllers a few time and the only time I reduced it because I fought I knew my play space enough, I nearly broke both my right controller and my living room window.

Update: it still likes to mess up (eye flicker and 1fps) presumably whenever I open the settings after a while. I appreciate the info, but so far all i can do to keep alyx fresh for myself is pretend she's prone to having a stroke at random 😖

I would not recommend it, but I believe you can turn it off. I don't remember where. But I'm about 99% sure you are able to turn it off.

I switched from "balanced" power to "high performance" on the Windows power settings, and for me, it fixed the stuttering.

This video is 3 years old and I can confirm that this still is a problem. I've struggled with the same issue for quite a while now. Did what you suggested in the video and...... Gone. Now all I have to fix is my constant falling through the floor problem.. Any ideas? And massive thanks!

I’ve been having this issue recently, and I think it is because my monitor is now 4K, AND my headset’s resolution is really high as it is a Quest 2, AND the Steam overlay is probably set to a high resolution, AND I have my Oculus overlay…. Which is probably why every time the game opens up it says I have low GPU memory, when I never used to have this issue lol

Turn off SteamVR home, Disable Oculus home (with Oculus tray tool) since both "home's" are GPU memory hogs and CPU taxing, set "default super sampling" in Oculus tray tool to Zero and use Steam VR supersampling (resolution per eye) only, otherwise you are compunding the different settings. Only use supersampling in Oculus tray tool when playing a non-steamvr game. Don't use Oculus guardian unless you absolutely need to because it eats up GPU memory as well. Get yourself a good software firewall (I use glasswire) and block all internet communication of Oculus 'OVRserver64somethingsomething' process (you find it easily it will be the one eating up most of the cpu in task manager) by blocking it with firewall you reduce the thread load of that service by 70% and therefore much less stress on cpu. Do all this and everything VR will run flawlessly :)

I fixed my stuttering but setting the steam VR server priority to high, the oculus server and half life alyx game it’s self. And it didn’t stutter once well playing acceptance when I was loading saves.

I did a 1000 things, but before them, I tried setting the render to Vulkan and forgot about it. Crap FPS on 2080 ti 9700k. Then I remembered and set it to DX11. SMOOTH AS BUTTER.

Dang, I was really hoping this would work for me after all the good comments from everyone else. I have tried everything. I have an RTX 3060 with an i7 11370h. Every other game runs fantastic. What's funny is that Half Life ran better on my last computer build when other games did not. Now it's the opposite. I guess I'm going to uninstall it. At least I got to experience it on my RTX 2060 Ryzen 5 2600x with no issues.....

Unfortunately, this didn't work for me. I have a 6800XT, R5 3600 and a Reverb G2. I use fpsVR to monitor while in HL:A and get over 90FPS 90% of the time. BUT, when I quickly look up at the sky and back down across the city (on the balcony at the beginning of the game) the FPS suddenly drops to a consistent 45 for about 10+ seconds with the GPU utilisation also dropping to about 30-70% (down from 90%). I have tried with graphics settings on all low and OFF, and all ultra and ON and with SS at 50% to 150%. The performance is almost exactly the same regardless of settings. I haven't tested in boneworks yet, but HL:A is the only game I have tried that has this problem. Every other game I have tried gets a solid 90+fps with SS between 120% and 250%. Anyone have any idea what could cause this? At this stage I'm guessing it must be driver related.

The reverb g2 has a significantly higher resolution and even if your computer is way higher class than mine, Alyx is made to use all the resources you got, your solution could be going into steam and lower the resolution. There are also extra steps. Steam overlay has to be turned off, also if your videocard has a game driver software the overlay has to be turned off on there as well. I don’t have a Radeon i have nvidia and GeForce turns on the overlays automatically. For me that was not a problem. The fact that you’re saying that you’re looking up the sky than back down overloads your system sounds like a ram issue. When cards deal with distance , it’s always loaded into the ram. So I’m actually wondering if you could mess with only settings that mostly use ram. Both GPU RAM and normal. Also do you have an ssd or hdd?

@@profess0re160 Thanks for your reply. I have a fast SSD and 32GB DDR4 3200MHz. I just had a chance to do more testing and at this stage I think I may have resolved the issue. It appears the problem was caused by under utilisation. When looking up at the sky, and back down again it was like the sky was so easy to render my GPU was halving it's performance and would take a long time to go back to 100% (like a power saving mode?). First I went into windows power settings and checked that everything was set to max performance and 100% CPU etc. That didn't make any difference and the CPU was only at 35% utilisation most of the time anyway. Then I increased HL:A SS to 220% (I always have steam global SS at 100%) and set all HL graphics settings to ultra, then the FPS suddenly locked to 90 regardless of where I looked, with 85 - 95% gpu utilisation. I then reduced the application SS to 200% and set some of the in game graphical settings to high (textures and fog) so that I reduce the chances of frame drops in more demanding scenes. I didn't change anything else and steam overlay is still on.

I have a new development. Turning OFF steam motion smoothing seems to be the main fix for the problem. This is completely counterintuitive as steam smoothing is supposed to increase frame rate, but for me it halves it!

I highly recommend you just disable SteamVR Home. It's completely useless and eats up upto 2GB of GPU memory just sitting in the background.

You're missing a huge point where the game ran smoothly before an update soon to be more than a year ago. Pay attention next time. Also explain why some people have the same exact problem on a 3090? And especially not a resource problem when the video card is not maxed out. It is a feature on steam. I removed the problem by adjusting that feature. And it runs smooth again. The problem is that this should not happen. Or if it does it should not last this long without a solution.
