:) What do you know, it really works! Thank you! It was a heart-stopping experience to disassemble and re-assemble it all, and I used pieces of bamboo skewer and folded cardboard for the fix - but speedometer and odometer started working after this!

Thank you making this video. I have been dealing with this issue for several years now. Snaping the trip odometer button would work sometimes until it broke. Then turning the windshield wipers on and off would get it working sometimes. I follwed your video instructons and it worked immediately. I'll keep you posted if it stops working. Thanks again.

I had my subie serviced and tested at a transmission shop and they informed me it was the head unit. I found another "fix" on some subaru forums. It too was an epic failure. I did resolder two connections on my old head unit and speedo has been working since.

You should rename this to "How to break the speedo." If you've done all the work to get to the bad connector then do yourself a favor and fix it the right way with a soldering iron. Jamming a screw in there will only put more strain on the joint. It might fix it temporarily, but in the long run its only going to get worse.

Reflowing the solder connection in the blue connector and the jumper worked like a champ. I hit each with a little flux prior to remelting them.

4) What you are looking at is the instrument cluster with a clear plastic cover. Things are very-very FRAGILE in there with those dials. Try to keep the plastic on, as the tabs that hold it in are likely brittle with age. 5) There are four more screws to remove. A short (2-3") Phillips head screwdriver is helpful for the two on top. Before you start I suggest you get some packing tape and seal up the now open spaces into which screws may fall. Continues…

What to do if only tachometer doesn't work? It works sometimes for a moment if a catch a bump :D i checked the contacts... Also the obd reader gets the rpm readings all the time, even when the tacho isn't working. Any ideas?

The screw doesn't help anything...you need to take out 5 silver screws that need to be removed and solder a wire between speed sensor pin and j8 on the board

I'm having both speedo and odometer issues on my 2010 Outback...is it the same fix!?? Dealer wants almost 1 grand to replace the cluster. Thanks!

Arrg! After 2 weeks, the issue has occurred again! This car is used on rough back roads. As soon as I get the car, I will try placing a connector sleeve on that pin. Soldering will be the next step. BUT I'm beginning to suspect the problem is not the pin/sleeve but the connector's connection to the underlying board. Stay tuned.

I tried this and didn't work for me. The blue connector was loose and I took the whole module a part to check the soldered connections.

How do you get the cluster out of the dash?
@gnavarro1971
@gnavarro1971 3 года назад
Put steering column to the lowest level height regulation. Locate 4 screws, 2 below the headlamp washer, defogger and fog lights switches, and other 2 upwards close to cluster. Unscrew, remove the black mask, unplugging the mentioned switches. Put the mask aside. Locate the 4 screws that hold cluster in place, unscrew. Pull the cluster towards you, slide your hand to the back of it. Unplug 3 large connectors (2 white, 1 gray) and the speedo (blue one). Open driver door, and slide carefully the cluster to your left, passing it through the space between steering wheel and dashboard. That's all!

You have to think that alot of people do not have the tools or knowledge to solder.

@@Chicken2341 People like that shouldn't work on their cars! This video is a dumbass fix, done by one of those people!👎

1) Start by tilting the steering wheel all the way down. Upcoming steps involve jockeying things out to the right of the wheel. 2) Four screws remove the first outer grey panel with four (or so depending on options) buttons. 3) Disconnect the plugs on the back of these buttons. Continues…
