I feel that more high end cases, anything over USD$100, should have integrated GPU support brackets.

Shaking is not even close to harming it physically (the actual gpu or even the pcb, only maybe the output connectors shield), different from direct impact which may actually damage it. Waving/wiggling it around does nothing, as everything is in place. Also unless it's a strong force that it might deform the shield enough to start hurting the pcb, but it still takes way too much strenght to actually damage the pcb

Whether you tighten the traditional screws, or apply Jay's method of screws behind the card, you are stressing the joint between the graphics PCB and backplate. It depends. How much stress do you want to lay off the pcei socket versus the graphics pcb. On the other hand a Suspender and hooks releases all types of stress 😉

Uh physics dude.. if weight is causing it to sag on one end, you don't wedge the other end unless you want to add more pressure to the center. You don't wanna do that with a GPU, because then you're just adding even more pressure to the PCI-E lane. So thats why they sell GPU brackets, because it supports the end where the sag occurs, not the end already supported. You're just adding more pressure, and thus while your sag may be gone, it's putting more strain on your PCI-E lane.. rip.
@Atlink
@Atlink 6 лет назад
Funny, I was thinking the same thing. Sure, it'll help in a pinch, but I believe that even more weight is being applied to the PCI-E port, since that's acting like the fulcrum in this case. The best way to fix sag is to balance out the pressure. So, going back to the beginning, the corner that's drooping IS the problem. Let's look at it like this. You have a five pound weight attached to the end of a two foot long metal pole. Imagine you need to hold this pole straight out in front of you, arm extended. Where would you pick it up to make it easiest to hold? If you picked up the pole at the opposite end of the weight, your arm would be wrenched downward substantially faster than it would if you grabbed it next to the weight, or even on top of the weight. Same concept applies here. You want to eliminate the source of the downward force, which is the large area that is completely unsupported. All this is doing is adding more torque to the card and the PCI-E slot.
@TJeremiah
@TJeremiah 5 лет назад
@@Atlink Figured I would play the devil's advocate here. When the gpu is installed normally, and the sag is present, the GPU pins are not level inside of the PCI-E lane. It would seem like there would be pressure points on the top left and bottom right of the GPU pins. While it is true that more pressure will be applied to the PCI-E lane when the screw mod is present. The pressure will be distributed more evenly. Much like a person standing on ice will break through, but while lying down the ice can hold the weight. Just a thought.

As Jay showed in the video, the point of tension is not on the 3.0x16 slot, hence when he moved the card back and forth it tipped corner to corner. The problem as displayed is the mounting hardware for the IO, which is plenty strong enough to hold the card if it were fixed properly to the plate. The only way to reduce stress is to reduce weight or displace the weight more evenly, both things you cannot do without reworking the crappy design. So it makes no difference as far as stress goes, it just makes the card look less shitty

I mean if you think about back in the day when the GPU mounting standard was invented. GPU's weighed nothing. They were barely more than a PCB with a tiny fan on top. Today we have giant 3 fan cards and water cooled sweetness that put to much weight on the mounting setup and PCI slot. I really wish case manufacturers would take this into account and ship cases with universal GPU supports. Who wants their sweet RGB lights showing off your GPU sag? LOL...Nobody! I run a meshify C case but I have been thinking about swapping to a case where the motherboard sits flat on its back. That way GPU sag, as well as any stress the CPU cooler is putting on the socket is eliminated. Something like a cooler master HAF XB or the Thermaltake Core V21.

That doesn't take the load off of the PCI-E slot, the cards need to be supported at both ends to do that. The problem from a case manufacturers point of view is how to make a universal bracket to properly support the cards when every video card has it's own dimensions? There needs to be a standard set for them to be able to do that even if it is AMD and NVidia having their own standard.

The problem really stems from the fact that the PCI/PCI-E standard edge connector was designed for cases that sat flat, rather than in a tower orientation. So there is no support there...but the problem *used* to be mitigated by the fact that there used to be a hard standard for the length of expansion cards, and most cases had card guides to support the end of the card. But...standards for card lengths have become very...inexact, so now we have the problem you are addressing.
@noire1001
@noire1001 5 лет назад
I think they should standardise gfx card size and have a second mounting bracket on the end of the card that is then screwed into the case. Even if you wedge the cooler off the case or add the screw to the mounting slot, it still doesn't stop the pcb flexing, even with a thin metal top plate. Plus there is still a lot of weight being placed on the PCIe socket. A good strong L bracket on the opposite side of the care would totally solve the problem and I think its getting to the stage where it's needed.

What I do to avoid sag is to support some of the card’s weight with the power cables. Just route them behind the motherboard and use a hole that is slightly above the card and plug it in, then just push your card up and pull on the the cable (not too hard as to not damage the cable or the card itself), and finally anchor you cable with a zip tie. I just do this on cards that are not too heavy to prevent damaging the power connections.

I've always noticed it and hated it. The first big card I had was a Radeon 6950HD that was heavy. Luckily, the case I had at the time had the HHD cage close enough that I could rig something up to make a bracket. I used the removable metallic faceplate of the optical drive and did a very slight 'z' curve to it to fit just under the card at the sagging end, and slipped the other end between two metallic parts on the HDD cage. It was perfect. Then I got a new case, and a new GPU. There is sag, but no HDD cage. Hell of a lot of airflow, though...

The Blower (reference) cards have much less sag issues. The weight is mostly in the "front" where the HS is placed. Also the whole card is more rigid due to the enclosure, and normally not so long as the high-end aftermarket cards due to the long HS. But this is a very nice little handy fix for the PCI-E stress. You still have stress on the cards PCB. Only way to overcome this is with support at the "back" end.

There’s holes in the back of the case in the pcie mounting slots. In the slot below the graphics card find a screw or small bolt that can turn into those holes. Find a hole that lines up with a spot on the cooling solution that you can apply pressure to (the same as how Jay used a wedge to support the Zotac Amp Extreme card). Install the graphics card, then turn the screw or bolt enough to level the graphics card. In my opinion this is better than wedging with some loose object because it can’t simply fall out.

Jay, do you think this problem would be less of an issue if case manufacturers started using soft rubber grommets on the slots for the expansion card brackets? Rubber would be compressible enough to account for variations in widths and thicknesses, and wouldn't add too much to the cost of a case, but it would better locate and hold a card in place. Do you think the recent trend of vertical mounted cards is to prevent sagging while improving aesthetics? Also, if support at the other end of the card is needed, why not have a horizontal support coming out from the wall of the case that holds the motherboard? That'd look a lot better than vertical supports, could work for multiple cards, and wouldn't be too difficult to mod.
@MrBasisGuy
@MrBasisGuy 6 лет назад
Only way I see something like this being supported by case manufacturers is if it somehow costs the same or saves them on costs. I mean, It took a while before thumbscrews were even standard. The PCI/PCIE slot standard was not designed for cards with heavy heatsinks (or even heatsinks at all). The ATX standard has been around for a while and was conceived in an era where a GPU was not even invented yet -- and also, at the time, tower cases were not the norm, cases lay on their long sides. So these slots were actually created for vertical cards. The "trend" is just physics forcing the use of the slots as they were designed.

You'd think that, by now, it would be abundantly clear to case manufacturers that PCI slots were never intended to serve as mechanical support of any weight, whatsoever. This is precisely why I mount all my builds with IO at the top of the case, with the GPU hanging vertically from the bracket. DIY Perks has a good example of this in his Silent PC build.

I drop the screw every time like you said, but i feel it doesn't help with the end result. This is great though, i had a home made solution which worked when i had my X58 G1 Assassin and GTX 780TI. I cut the end off a right angle sata connector, and glued a straight end from a sata connector to that, and it slot into the sata port right underneath the GPU and supported it, was pretty invisible. I wasn't worried about the stress on the sata port as it wasn't putting much weight from sagging.

my 9 year old Asus EAH5850 has a supporting bar made of steel which is installed across the whole length of the card and eliminates all sag. Considering this card has only an entry-level cooler by today`s standards, it baffles me why this seems to be some ancient and forgotten technology with modern 3-slot cards. it also looks good and has place for the manufacturer´s logo on it.

It works for wiggle stabilization, however cards with huge heat sinks like the ASUS 1080ti still sag due to the entire card itself is flexing, being that they are too heavy. What I did was I had lifted the power cables above and zip tied the cables in place. This worked extremely well with SLI and reduces the stress on the PCI slots as well.

My whole msi 390 permanently bent itself over 2 or 3 years. I've strung it up, and I'm slowly increasing tension, hoping it reverses over the heat cycles, but I'm afraid of popping the solder balls one of these days from the overall movement....and a little weary of damaging the pcie slot (from spending half the time pushing in on the pins that would normally be more extended when the card is being pulled down...... Like when trying to pull a nail out with pliers, moving it back & forth loosens it- but given enough time and/or heat, the same effect can surely happen to pcie slots....

If you remove the third bracket cover and attach some rigid foam or plastic to it which you have pre-measured you can solve the sagging problem and dampen vibration. Same principle as your method but utilising that spare blank cover hidden behind the card anyway. As for Vertical card mounts and heat , I have found an extra fan running at sub audible levels pointed towards the front of the case helps dissipate the heat build-up over time.

I'd be curious to know how much force/weight it actually removes from the PCI slot. Sure it makes it look better, but is it actually reducing the amount of potentially damaging force on the PCI slot? The End Support rods, likely remove more weight off the slot than this method due to actually supporting the card rather than just moving the pivot point.

Ive always noted the fact that on most duel slot cards they basically leave all the weight of the cooler on the pcb alone, it would make alot of logical sence to connect the cooler shroud to the top of the cards IO plate. The only issue with your fix is possibly by securing the bottom end of the plate the card will still continue to sag, and soon you'll end up with a pretty curved pcb, it really does need a support on the ass end, only sure way to keep the card true. This sagging is caused by cooler weight and heat, so im truely amazed at how none of Nvidia or AMD nor any of their board partners have even thought about this obvious area of weakness. Im shocked at how much these new gpus cost and they still have a big io plate with totally no support at all still, a pcb isn't meant to support weight. I thought these gpu designers were professional lol. If i was charging $500 for a gpu it would come with built in support or i would at least bundle some kind of bracket support as part of the product.

I would drill 2 holes near the end bottom M/B mount and place 2 bolts 1 on top 1 on bottom of the Video card to keep it in place. Second solution is have some sort of black PVC pipe mounted vertically from bottom case to the top and near the end of the GPU card cut a notch in it to have the GPU fit 1/2 way inside it and to keep it very stable and mostly make sure the black PVC pipe is pure black or use electric tape or gaffers tape to make it blacked out.
