You'll need: Drywall screws (possibly), Oil-based quick-drying primer (Kilz original), paper drywall tape, joint compound (details below), a mud pan, 4, 6, and 10 " taping knives, a drywall sander [hand or pole---I'm using one with a vacuum attachment (not necessary)], 150 grit drywall sand paper/screen, medium grit sanding sponge.
Except for the paint, you should find all of these things in the drywall section of your home center.
:51 Peel damaged tape off.
1:25 Scrape all loose paint and compound.
1:45 Reattach drywall if necessary I'm using 1.75 inch drywall screws. Set them so the head is just below the surface of the drywall face, but does NOT actually tear the paper.
1:59 Paint everything with a good quick-drying primer. I prefer an oil-base like Kilz Original. It will help glue down any the edges of the scraped paint, and also seal any yellow/brown water stains that might bleed through.
2:09 Mix up or use premixed joint compound. I'm using Easy Sand 20 because it hardens in about 20 minutes and I'm trying to get more coats on as quickly as possible. If you've never taped drywall before, you probably want to use an Easy Sand 90 (90 minutes to set), or an air drying compound. If you use a premixed compound, you'll want to add a little water to it till it's about the consistency of peanut-butter.
2:20 Cut a piece of drywall tape as long as the crack.
2:32 Use a 4 inch taping knife to fill the crack in the drywall. Lay it relatively thick, and at least as wide as the paper tape.
3:05 Press drywall tape into the wet compound.
3:15 Starting from the middle and working to the ends, take your 4 inch taping-knife and smooth the drywall tape out, pressing firmly enough to squeeze out most (but not all) of the joint compound. It should look nice and flat and smooth. You can wait for this to dry if you want to be cautious, or move directly to the next step if you think you can get it done before the compound starts setting.
3:32 With your 6 inch taping knife, add more joint compound on top of the tape, then smooth most of it back off again with lengthwise motions. There should be enough compound left on the tape just to cover the edges and make the surface completely smooth. Let it set or dry completely.
4:56 Gently scrape the dry joint compound to take off any high spots.
5:50 Apply more joint compound to the the joint with a10 inch taping knife, and finish it smooth.
7:23 Scrape it again when it sets or dries (not before).
7:35 Apply another coat of joint compound and finish smooth. (There are better videos out there on the nuances of drywall taping--here's one • Taping and Mudding 101... ).
Let it dry completely
9:00 Sand with 150 grit paper or screen. Prime and paint

Hi Dave, great work. I have a question, if it is from water damage, do you need to replace the damaged drywall?
@FamilyFriendlyDIY
@FamilyFriendlyDIY 3 года назад
Good question. Most of the time it's a judgement call. It really depends on how badly it's damaged-- (is it swollen, misshapen, or brittle? will the screws/nails be able to continue to hold it? does it have mold or mildew on it?) Sometimes if it's just a few swollen spots (say like a foot square or less) that aren't compromising the strength of the drywall or it's ability to stay on the wall or ceiling, you can dig/cut out the swollen bits, tape and mud over them, or patch them (California patches are quick and easy--check out this video by Vancouver Carpenter ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-17awCvAA7Q0.html.) What I believe usually happens is the water drains into the joints, and they fail first, like in this video. I also had to re-do all of the ceiling joints in a bathroom of this same house because they didn't have a bathroom fan and the moisture from showers literally steamed all of their taped joints loose. Hope this helps. Thanks for the comment.

Is it normal to experience that because we have the same problem also but same to you that no hole on it.

Hey Dave. Thanks for the video. At 1:59, how soon do I have to start putting in the compound after I prime it? Can I do it the next day?
@FamilyFriendlyDIY
@FamilyFriendlyDIY 2 года назад
Good question, philluso. It depends on what the primer instructions on the can say. I usually use something that has a drying time of 20 minutes, and in half an hour I'm applying a coat of compound. Hope this helps.

I am doing this now just watching the video.... i gave up on the drop cloth going to end up everywhere regardless :D what a mess - after i took the loose parts off it looked like I wasn't the first person to go over the same area.... it goes from single layer of bubbled paint to several layers of compound...do wear a mask though i regret it now.

Can you touch on why the Kilz and tape? Does the tape hold the mud together better? What's the benefits of putting kilz down first? What if you were not to use either what could happen?
@FamilyFriendlyDIY
@FamilyFriendlyDIY 2 года назад
Certainly, Kurtis. Good questions. When the top layer of paper on the drywall gets torn so that you can see the brown layer underneath, that brown layer will bleed brown through drywall mud and even through latex primer and paint sometimes. The oil-based kilz seals the brown paper so that it won't bleed. ... The tape on the joint is necessary to prevent cracking. If you just filled the joint with compound, it would either crack immediately when it dries, or it would crack down the road from movement. The paper bridges the gap, basically making one continuous sheet of drywall, since drywall is only paper-coated gypsum to begin with. ... Hope this helps.

It'd be really helpful to put instructions on what youre using/ doing at each step haha. I know you listed them in another comment but do you mind listing it in order? Im having trouble following what youre doing and using without some written instructions on screen as u do it. Great video otherwise though, very helpful!

Hey, @Canela26, I just added them to the video description. That said, there are a lot of better drywall videos out there that really get into the nuances of taping drywall. What is your ceiling has texture? How do u get the ending finish to look similar to the textured ceiling?
@FamilyFriendlyDIY
@FamilyFriendlyDIY Год назад
It depends on what kind of texture it is. There are several different types. Some texture you make by dipping a paint roller into a very watery drywall compound mix (a little thicker than pancake batter) and paint it on, then you can come back with a trowel or putty knife after it sets up a little bit and do what’s called a knockdown texture by smoothing across the ripples that you painted on to make it look like stucco. Then there is also a texture you make by a little broom like device that you splat on the ceiling, I call it a crowsfoot texture. Then there’s popcorn, which you would have to get some sort of spray can of popcorn texture.

How do you dry it? I turned on my heater all days to 75, and I blow air into my light fixture instead of cutting a hole from the ceiling. Do you know how long that will take to dry? I am so worried there will be mold.
@FamilyFriendlyDIY
@FamilyFriendlyDIY 3 года назад
I guess drying time would vary, Michael. This was from an old leak, so it had been dry for years. Google says it takes about 3 days for drywall to dry on average. Hope this helps.
@Michael-ur3ju
@Michael-ur3ju 3 года назад
DIY Dave thank you! The moisture meter detected that some affected areas are 17, and only a few spots are 20. It’s has been 4 days. Not sure if it’s ok just to just let it dry this way or I need to call for professional.
@FamilyFriendlyDIY
@FamilyFriendlyDIY 3 года назад
@@Michael-ur3ju You can mix a 1 to 3 ration of bleach to water and spray the paper, or vinegar and water (not sure the ratio). Just google "how to kill mold on drywall." I believe the vinegar type solution can actually act as a mold inhibitor as well due to the acidity.
