I used these products to repair a windowsill. I was skeptical & so was my family. It really is as easy as this makes it seem. My recommendation is to buy more than you think you need. I followed all the instructions (including making sure windowsill was dry) and had to treat it with Petrifier 3x to get wood to thoroughly harden. I’d used 2 step epoxy before so was familiar with how to mix & apply it. That was the next step. Windowsill is hard as a rock & am just waiting to sand, prime & paint it. I’m a 70 yo female with two strokes & heart disease. If I can do it, anyone can

I'm going to encourage you to answer this one yourself using the amazing God-given critical-thinking skills you have. As you watch this series, pay attention in video #4. How can I do this on a support of a high deck. The part of the deck off my house is small but the supports are rotten. I can’t replace the entire deck and I bought the house with the water rot and thought I could repair it. The small deck is more of a sitting area off my room than a deck used for weight! HELP. How do I work upside down to get it fixed

Randy, this material is NOT a structural product. It does NOT replace the structural strength of wood. If your deck supports are rotten, you may need a more robust repair. I offer phone consulting services to go over things like this. It works best when you send great photos of the problem. Hi Tim! To kill possible fungi of rotting wood of my crazy situation (see further) would you use Concrobium? Borate solution? Copper Sulfate? (As per comments-section in thisiscarpentry foam-rot-repair.) My situation is difficult. Stretches of 1950s wood-windowframes/doorsteps rotted due to no awnings. There's even a "finger crawlspace" behind the asbestos shingles at left of rotted window, which feels rotted. Past handymen never alerted me though i'd asked them to check around house..Limited funds...money-pit house..money-pit anatomy.

Tim, some followups: I have the same Q as jsay who asks "why not just change the whole window frame with new wood"...in fact, two handymen had suggested that to me in recent weeks, though i still think it may need pre-treatment. 2nd: I read your link. Are you aware the product is unavailable? Rather just Rustoleum. But in any case, how does one apply either of those to my situation, where the rotten wood is already ON the house? I.E. It speaks about "standing up the ends of the lumber". You'd have to "stand up the house!

I've seen many u tube contributors using regular bondo. I'd rather listen to people who actually use the stuff. Manufacturers are there to sell. They'll tell you enough to get you down to the local big box store and buy.
@askthebuilder
@askthebuilder 6 лет назад
So you'd rather follow the advice of someone who has no idea of the formulation or actual ingredients of the product? That doesn't seem to be a prudent action plan. Many manufacturers do NOT want their product misused and they want people like you to contact them with comparison questions. It's too bad you have a jaded outlook and paint all with the same brush. Good luck to you. You do realize there are tons of people who've used products wrong for years and you may be getting advice from someone who simply has no clue what she/he is talking about. Doesn't seem that difficult replacing the window sill with never rot composite wood. I do that on my house if its not too complicated. Another option is cap the sill with sheet metal, my roofer does that rather than ripping everything apart.
@askthebuilder
@askthebuilder 3 года назад
Have you ever looked at the side profile of a milled window sill from the factory? You might want to. Capping with metal creates rot when water gets in as the caulk fails at the edges. But what do I know? I used to each lunch on overturned empty drywall mud buckets for 20+ years...

@@askthebuilder Actually I have, done a few new window construction replacements, enlarging openings, reframe and re stucco. Caulk have to be maintained, perhaps once a year. My guess is you've never replace a wood window sill before. You need to take out the entire window from the opening. You need to mill a very unique-shaped piece of wood.
