I think your model would look even better if you used the 1x1 round tile with clock print that was used in the Encanto set for the clock on the dashboard. Surprised Lego didn't do that originally.

In addition to the off-scheme colors aiding in following the instructions, I also think it fits with LEGO's mission of replay-ability, even if it's for sets that are meant as display models. While most adults will build and display the Expert sets and never dismantle or preserve the sets in storage for another time, the set and parts are still intended to be played with to create other things and to use imagination to explore new ideas and designs. Getting a bunch of new and different colors in a set can inspire more creativity and options when treating an Expert set as building material rather than a goal to have a perfect model. Your efforts here are testament to how creative AFOLs can be.

That certainly a solid idea and sentiment - thanks for sharing Charles! Another commenter made a similar observation and it is a good point. Including different coloured parts for the internals of a set/model does give those who build and disassemble their models more options in terms of part colour choices to be used for other builds and MOCs. I'm actually supportive of this, BUT only if those off-colour parts are 100% not visible in the finished result. In this case for this BTTF Time Machine Lego really botched it - hence the video and fix instructions. In contrast I'm building the UCS Landspeeder at the moment and although the internals look like an 'unhinged rainbow' - the Lego designer has done a superb job at ensuring these off-colour scheme parts are 100% covered up in the finished model. So the result for the UCS model is a win-win. Coloured parts for those that want to use the set parts for other uses, but also a finished model that looks like it is supposed to!

Excellent video! I would deem it your best one yet. A 100% improvement for the underside. I am very much like you when it comes to building MOCs (or improving Lego sets) the underside needs to look good as the main sides...for swooshing and display. And much respect to the pre-build research into needed parts. BTW that many off color pieces is ridiculously out of control.
@CraftedBricks
@CraftedBricks 2 года назад
Thank you Zealor777, I worked very hard on this video & the instructions. So your comment and others too warms my heart, as it makes the work worth it! + I think this is actually a great set, but only after all the mods and off-colour parts are swapped out. Re the off-colour parts being out of control, yep, and as I mentioned in the video this seems to be more and more 'standard practice' for newer Lego sets, which is concerning. It's actually becoming that much of an issue for me that if I see another set that I'm interested in where the off-colour parts are not covered up like this DeLorean I'd have to seriously consider whether I even buy the set in the first place.

Great job Simon. I totally agree with you. I always try to pay attention to details when I design a model and spend a lot of time looking for photos of the real subject from different angles to make the model as close as possible to the original. Lego should really do the same, expecially in adult sets. I think nowadays they're releasing too many sets, really too many and sometimes the miss the target. Alberto

@CraftedBricks 2 года назад
Hi Alberto, yes it really shows with your Mega Figure designs how much you pay attention to the details of the subject. And yes I certainly agree, there is a constant stream of Lego set new releases that is hard to keep up with. I feel more and more though these days that I only buy and build the sets and MOCs that I really care about and would want to display. Anything else I pass on. : )

There are few other minor mods that I've seen since publishing my video and instructions. I've actually had this set since roughly mid last year sitting and waiting for the chance to build it. I'm always on the lookout for moc improvements I can make, but didn't know enough about the set to do so (the only thing I knew for certain is that the doors don't remain open on their own). After doing a bit of research and finding several mocs on rebrickle/youtube with the intentions of taking the best parts of each, I came across your video and I was truly flabbergasted at the amount of off color parts there were... more unforgivable is how visible the are along the underside and interior. That plastic tub you displayed in your video could easily be thrown into a box and re-marketed as a new " LEGO Classics" set. Thank you for your step by step guide, it was very easy to go through my own parts library and identity what I needed... I had roughly 80% of the replacement color pieces in my own collection, and the remaining ones just arrived in the mail today. So I'll look forward to building this from scratch over the weekend, and even have plans to build my own display stand and do moc versions of Marty and Doc from all 3 movies.

Great video. I modded that set as well: - Replaced the cheese slopes by a tile on the doors (bottom of the window) - Replaced the four black pins with balls by light gray ones on the frame bars between the windshield and the doors - Put 2 coats of transparent neil polish on the pins holding the doors so that they can remain in opened position. - Rotated 1/4 turn the round brick at the end of the axle activatinf the light, so it can remain lit. - Replaced two 1x2 plates by two modified plate with rails around the back license plate assembly, so it can be removed more easily. I also plan to get extra pieces to build all the accessories of the three different versions _without having to dissassemble pieces_ here and there every time.

Would love to do this with mine, but I already had so much trouble building it (I may be an adult, but the axels and wheel mechanics were so hard for me to do because I just kept skipping over very small parts I didn't notice) and while I do agree that the gray looks nice, I really think having it with that metallic gray look all around would've been so cool. Might risk it and try the door fix anyway because I would love to display it with the door(s) open.

Hi there - yes certainly is you have built the model already the part off-colour scheme fixes would be too much. But the door mod is certainly easy to do after you have already built the model and it integrates so well with the interior of the cabin you wouldn't know that it's a 'mod'. I reckon go for it!
@klausm5460
@klausm5460 2 года назад
One reason LEGO uses so much colorful parts in the construction may be that the 18+ models are actually not focussed on LEGO fans alone but also on fans of different culture or pop culture genres and LEGO wants to expand their customer base by making the assembly as easy as possible for less experienced builders. Thanks for putting so much effort in sharing your improvements. What I have done immediately was swap the four 1x2 slope pieces at the base of the side windows with 1x8 light grey tiles to make the window opening look larger and IMHO improve the side profile of the car. Unfortunately that makes the thickness of the door construction more visible, but not too obvious given that the inner part of the window frame is already black.
@CraftedBricks
@CraftedBricks 2 года назад
Hi Klaus - yes I agree with you in that the 'multi-coloured' approach to model construction is one way Lego are trying to make their models easier to build and therefore more accessible to less experienced builders. I wonder if they know however that is certainly alienating their loyal fan base of long-time Lego enthusiasts? When I speak to people at my Lego club the sentiment more and more is that Lego is not only becoming a very expensive hobby but that building custom models is a more rewarding and certain experience than taking a gamble on an expensive Lego standard set.

You will need to look at the other list I published (linked to) for the parts needed to do the off-colour part fixes, I can't remember how much the parts cost $50-70 AUD I think. As far as the door windows - yes you can use 2x 1x8 tiles ($4162) in Medium Stone Grey for that. Happy modding to you!

This is SO awesome. I hesitated buying the LEGO-Delorean because of the color-issues, then pulled the trigger after seeing this video (and a slight price drop). AMAZING job! Did two additional mods: the window one (replacing the slopes with a long tile, not sure about the color to use though…. ) and: left side rear of the vehicle, the three reddish „cans/cylinders… I set them „inwards“ a row and put 3x „Tile, Round 1 x 1 with Bar and Pin Holder“ (20482, black) in place of them, see in the doc brown manual. It's a bit tight but manageable. For full display galore I placed Marty and Doc figures from NECA in front of the car (better scale), SO good! Hi Roygo, we are definitely on the same wavelength! But as I mentioned in the video, and I'm sure you know too, it looks like this overuse of weird coloured parts is here to stay with current / recent Lego products. When I finished building my DeLorean, the first modification I thought of was how the designers could have added nine pieces to the kit, and the three configurations would have been modular. Instead, you have to cannibalize parts of Mr. Fusion and the box of transistor tubes from the hood in order to make the BttF 1 configuration.

Thanks Patrick, much appreciated. Hey how did the CaDa Ferrari turn out? I have one as well but I've not built it yet due to lack of time. Re Lego's constant use of off-colours I 100% agree, and 'fixing' the areas where you can at times see these weird colours poking through areas of the finished model can be difficult to do retrospectively - which makes the issue even more frustrating!

Nice video and work! Am definitely going to be instituting your changes! Although when it comes to the doors I think a simpler fix is more appropriate. A 4459 friction pin seems to works well as a replacement for the supplied pin, providing enough resistance to stop the door from dropping. Whether it holds up in the long term is another question so may have to use the mod you suggested in the end! And I totally agree with you about the colours. As much as the crazy colours help to a degree when building a set, they just look ugly especially in this set.

I did not see the Part Bags mentioned in this video. So I thought i should mention the issue I have with Lego that some one at Lego might see your comment section of your Back to the Future Vehicle Modification Video “down the road..?” And make the necessary fixes to improve the Lego Building experience. I have some issues with these Part Bags in other builds where the bags cannot be resealed closed if a builder such as myself decides to disassemble a model or prevent loss of parts during a build distraction and discover spilled contents on the shag carpet. I redesigned my Lego Part Bags by switching them out with different sized “bag zips”to accommodate each numbered bag with the pieces that came from each bag and cutting the part bag numbers and affixing them onto the clear bag zips. My Great Nephew recently received Pirate Ship Lego with my Part Bag Re-Ziped closure modification (not knowing his Uncle had reconfigured these part bags) My Nephew thought that the Lego Imagineers had done their research on the Part Bag as he enjoyed being able to pick out the pieces he desired and reseal the others not yet ready to remove without accidently spilling two different bags together. And his Dad remembers this frustration very well. I had forgotten all about this detail and had a good laugh since they did not know I switched out the mistake before my Great Nephew opened his gift.

Hello there! You certainly have a unique and clever way to deal with storing and managing parts for Lego builds. I'm not sure that re-sealable parts bags are on the agenda for Lego but it would worth while forwarding your suggestion to them when they next run a custom survey. I think what I'm looking forward to seeing Lego do is switch to paper bags for parts as way to reduce plastic waste. I don't know when that's coming but soon I think?

Thank you Justin! I completely understand where you are coming from - being into model making & painting myself when I was younger. A limited palette of shapes and elements that you can use (tires included) to make models like this means that they are never really going to look 'exactly' like the real subject or as good as a dedicated plastic injection molded parts model. The plus side or Lego (versus modelling) is that with their system of parts you can pretty much make anything and no gluing or painting is needed! So I guess pros and cons. Hi Simon, I have just started this build with all your suggestions and after watching the video again it got me wondering with so many spare parts left over what is your way of storing all your spare parts. Do you have them catalogued, do you just have them all in a big bucket, do you sort them by colour or style or both, do you store them by part number, just wondering how you do it? Thx Chris
@CraftedBricks
@CraftedBricks Год назад
That's a good question Chris! I store spare parts in a series of storage cabinets that I'll link to below. Each tray typically has a single part type (but sometimes 2-3 part types) with mixed colours. So I sort parts by 'type', versus both type and colour. I find when I'm hunting for a part for something I'm building or finding parts for a moc it is easiest to find the tray with the part type I want and then fish around for parts of that type with the colour I need. I also have a LOT of unsorted parts at the moment, that I'm working on sorting bit by bit, but it is a never ending chore! I also have some larger trays/bins for bulk parts like large plates, bricks, etc. I sort my parts differently when preparing for a build, that you will actually see in my next video! (I'm working on it now). Here are the cabinets I use: Type 1: www.amazon.com.au/Akro-Mils-10764-64-Drawer-Plastic-Hardware/dp/B000VTSOKS/ref=sr_1_8?crid=20TZ9J1GX6KI1&keywords=Akro-Mils+10124+24&qid=1680004985&s=home-improvement&sprefix=akro-mils+10124+24%2Chome-improvement%2C261&sr=1-8 Type 2: www.amazon.com.au/Akro-Mils-10124-Plastic-Hardware-6-5-Inch/dp/B003TV3NL0/ref=sr_1_1?crid=20TZ9J1GX6KI1&keywords=Akro-Mils+10124+24&qid=1680004985&s=home-improvement&sprefix=akro-mils+10124+24%2Chome-improvement%2C261&sr=1-1

Hi Caleb, my mods to swap-out all of the off-colour parts won't affect the install of your lighting kit at all (but you will have to re-build your model from scratch if you want to do those changes). As for my cosmetic mods I don't think there will be an issue. The only thing that comes to mind however is that with my version of the hood, the hood is a tight fit, and I suspect your lighting kit will use the space under the hood for the battery box etc. So you may have to make some adjustments but as I've not installed a lighting kit to my model I can't say 100% for sure. All the best with lighting up your model!

Hi Dylan - I shoot all the overhead scenes that you see in my videos with a 'pin board' type material covering my desk. I do often build on it as well. It's a firm material but is softer than a hard desk surface so yes helps to ensure I don't scratch or damage my models. The main reason for it however is that it provides a good non-reflective surface so that the overhead scenes are not overly bright and hard to look at. Where are you located? If you are in Australia I can link you to the product, it's sold by Bunnings which is a hardware retailer here in Australia. Re a studio tour - yes one day! @CraftedBricks
@CraftedBricks 2 года назад
Thank you! ...as to your question, hmm I think the pot element is perfect for being able to lift up Mr Fusion to put in organic matter + the handles allow for the upside down skeleton leg in Red for the clip detail, etc. ...But having a quick look in Studio you 'could' use element #73111 in Black to replace the pot as it's the only 'round' element with a 3x3 diameter that is close to the pot in size. It would sit a bit high so you'd have to mod the base as well to get it to sit lower. You will also need to insert a 2x2 round brick inside part #7311 with a 1x1 round plate on top of it so that way you can physically connect the 3x3 White dish of Mr Fusion to the assembly. I hope this gives you an idea to at least try out to see if you like it. The simpler option is glue! Just use a very small (tiny) amount on the inner edge of the 3x3 white dish of Mr Fusion to seat it permanently to the Pot element. But be very careful and go easy on the glue, I've ruined parts before if I've used too much glue.

Hi Fred - that's not quite correct but I like your enthusiasm. Changing the colour of the 3L pins from Blue to Black wont do anything! But using vintage Lego 3L pins (that came in only Black) seems to work (based on the video you saw and are referring to) as those older pins must be a fraction larger than newer Lego 3L pins and therefor add more friction to the door hinge assembly to support the weight of the doors.

Hi there - you can buy the parts you need for this modification from BrickLink. And this information on the list of parts you need is on the Rebrickable page that I linked to in the description of the video. There is a tutorial video on my channel too that may help on: 'how to buy Lego on BrickLink'. But you can also Google some guides. This would be a good first small project to take on for you if you are new to modifying standard Lego sets and/or new to BrickLink. Good luck!

I imagine the off-color _mostly_ internal parts is a policy pushed upon the set developers by upper management. I wouldn't be surprised if the root cause was two-fold: a) Use existing surplus parts rather than pressing those same parts in "correct" colors, and b) lower the perceived challenge of building these larger, more intricate sets, to appeal to larger audiences.
@CraftedBricks
@CraftedBricks 2 года назад
I think you could be right on 'upper management' or maybe other departments at Lego enforcing the use of off-colours. And I definitely agree with your point b). As for point a) I've heard this too, but I'm unsure, it seems an odd reason. I'd love to be able to talk to an ex-Lego employee to have this confirmed. It would also be really interesting to know more about the logistics of how Lego products are produced, not the moulding part, I mean the part aggregation part, bagging, boxing, shipping out to distributors, etc.
@crislee4057
@crislee4057 Год назад
I also think b) is the main reason, their goal is to expand their customers….. and what better way to get new ones with an „easier“ set

Just built the standard set. One of my doors opens normally and stays open by itself. It has enough friction to do so. So that’s interesting. Different tolerances in the parts? Also the colours in the rear hatch area look more like the colourful colours in the movie car, but agree I’d like to see more detail there. I think with this sort of 18+ set it should be all the correct colour pieces, and none of the instruction marking colour pieces. I mean people seek out jigsaw puzzles with huge areas of blue sky. They don’t add tiny fake detail to the sky pieces like numbers, do they?
@CraftedBricks
@CraftedBricks Год назад
Solid points and I'm glad you enjoyed your build! Yes some people don't experience the doors dropping as there may be just enough friction in the pins to keep them open. I've heard you can buy some vintage Technic pins that may be marginally larger, than can be used and the doors will stay open. I'm happy with the mod though, it's very easy to do and works really well. : )

Hi DarkHunter540, you have picked a great set to start your Lego journey with! ...and with your model building experience will be right at home with modding I'm sure. Rebrickable provides part cost estimates, check both the Inventory tab on the main page for this mod, AND make sure you click on the link for the other parts list (link in the main description on Rebrickable) for the off-colour scheme parts required. I separated the lists/inventories as many people will only want to do the cosmetic mods. Btw scale the Rebrickable cost estimates by +~20% to cover shipping when you order parts from BrickLink. 👌

Hi, great mod, I've just dismantled mine completely & am rebuilding using your guide, quick question, steps 12 & 13 states change the dark orange for medium stone grey, which I have done, from underneath everything is showing black except those medium stone grey 36841, is this an error as looking at your vid, I can't quite make out that part but it does look black from underneath, thanks, jeff

@CraftedBricks 2 месяца назад
Hi Jeff, it's been a loooooong time since I looked at this in detail. It looks like you could go with Black for those 1x1 brackets but it could be something to do with later stages of the build of the body. I honestly can't recall. If the model is looking good to your eye keep going! Black, Light Blueish Grey and Dark Blueish Grey are all on scheme colours.

Do your instructions replace every single coloured piece, even the ones that aren't typically on view? Oh and why is the display stand not suited for this model? Also the link for it shows a black base as opposed to your transparent base? Nice video!
@CraftedBricks
@CraftedBricks 2 года назад
Hi holyboy 1 - solid questions! Yes my instructions replace all of the off-colour parts completely. + I make minor adjustments to consistency with parts in some places swapped from Black to say Dark or Light Stone Grey where needed. I found it was best to take a 'better safe than sorry' approach to the off-colour parts fix, especially as I was always intending to publish the mods and instructions. The display stand is not suited to the model as the model does not balance properly on the stand. It tends to lean forward or backwards, I had to adjust the position of the model a lot while filming and photographing it. I also had to add in 2x 1x4 bricks and a 1x4 plate to get the model to seat on the stands top-plate given the underside of the Delorian is not a flat surface. And as to your last question it looks like Wicked Brick do not make their Vario stands with a clear base anymore - perhaps if you are interested in ordering their stands you could ask them if they would send you some with clear bases? I will probably order some more stands from them in future and I'll ask that exact question. I hope this helped!

@@CraftedBricks Thank you for the reply. Apologies for this delay. 08:57 I don't understand why you added these parts to balance the connection points for the wires - is this clearly for aesthetical reasons? One other mod you didn't do is to replace the 2 white tiles on top of Mr Fusion, with black - I have seen other people do this and it is more movie-accurate. For 11:02 sand-blue elements you replaced on top and rear, I guess you could also put them on the front side near the connection wires, even though technically you'd be adding bricks instead of replacing them. The sand blue piece you use is with a groove, there is also one without a groove, are you aware of this? Not sure which one works best. I like this video and although your instructions are on Rebrickable, I would have liked if you had gone into more detail for the rear near the reactor etc.
@CraftedBricks
@CraftedBricks 2 года назад
No problem at all. I see you also have a solid eye for details like me, good to hear! Your question answers: I added the round elements to the connection points as the model looks odd with the exposed front stud of the brackets at those points against the flexible wire connector. Yes it's just aesthetic. Re Mr Fusion, I'll have a look at that thanks for calling it out! Re the Sand Blue 1x2 tiles for the side connection points, I tried it, but the part Lego use is a 1x2 plate with rail (part #32028), it actually looks better in my opinion than the flat tile, but you try it on your model and if you like it, go for it. 1x2 tiles (part #3069b) all have a grove design on the edge/underside, the tiles with no edge/underside groove were discontinued by Lego in 1979! ...and can still be found on BrickLink but definitely not in modern colours like Sand Blue. Re more details on the rear section of the model in the video, it is often hard to match visuals and audio and to keep each video flowing to be interesting - in this case I was aiming to 'show' what changes I've made but not necessarily get into the step-by-step minutia as this is all covered in-depth in the free PDF mod instructions!
@holyboy1
@holyboy1 2 года назад
@@CraftedBricks For the exposed open studs, I find it odd to add 2 different elements rather than have it symmetrical - Out of the 2 parts you added here, I think I'd prefer to have both sides with the added studs rather than if both were with flat pieces, and as I think being symmetrical would look better. The dark stone grey pieces you use here are also called dark blue grey, in colour, if I'm not mistaken? (Correct me if I am wrong). I tried replacing the 2 sand-blue coloured pieces on top, with flat tiles and I am not so sure, I think in some weird way, the detail is lost. Also, having the top of Mr Fusion, in black like I mentioned to you, kind of draws the eyes to it, even though it is more movie accurate. I like that you chose to replace the black wand inside Mr Fusion, with the pearl gold - This looks good imo. I wonder about the 4265c Technic bush part that replaced the yellow colour, would they blend in more with the wheels if they were all black? But then the white rubber bands might be more apparent in contrast. I see you went with Medium stone grey, I picked up Light blueish grey - Is this the same colour?
@CraftedBricks
@CraftedBricks 2 года назад
No worries at all - customise you model as you see fit, that's the beauty of modding! As to your questions Dark Stone Grey (Lego colour) = Dark Blueish Grey (BrickLink colour). Same with Medium Stone Grey = Light Blueish Grey. The 4265c 1/2 bush Technic elements would certainly blend more with the wheel arch elements if in Black. But that part in Black was only ever produced by Lego in 1 set (back in 2005), and is therefore parts in that colour are hard to find and are expensive on BrickLink. That part is mainly produced in Yellow and Medium Stone Grey/Light Blueish Grey. IF you are going to be displaying the set in a static way in flying mode, you could actually remove the rubber bands and replace the 2x 1/2 bush elements with a full bush elements in Black (#3713). I hope this helps!
