FYI, after the Honda dealer told me my spool valve was leaking & quoted me $778.37 for the part + labor, I decided to replace it myself. Rather than just replacing the gaskets, I bought the OEM Honda assembly (part # 15810-RKB-J01) for $115 on eBay. The replacement was easy, as this video illustrates. However, even though I torqued it to factory spec of 16 ft/lb, it leaked WORSE than the original I replaced! I then read on a forum to torque it to 20 ft/lb & one of the three bolts broke off in the block. So, I removed the assembly & got the broken bolt out using a left hand bit inside a hinge centering bit. I then asked a Honda mechanic why the OEM replacement leaked worse than the original. He told me the OEM gasket with strainer that meets up to the block is too small for the grooves & said they use an aftermarket gasket, which is thicker. He also said to use silicone sealant around the OUTSIDE rim of the assembly. I bought an aftermarket gasket (part # 917.268) from Advance Auto. I used a micrometer to measure this gasket vs the OEM Honda & it is significantly thicker. I replaced the spool valve assembly with the thicker aftermarket gasket & used a carefully applied coat of silicone sealant around the outside & torqued to 16 ft/lb. It's now completely leak free. Just wanted to post this in case anyone else finds it useful.

@acidfuzzpedals9986
@acidfuzzpedals9986 2 месяца назад
@@user-ww9xl1cu5m Yes. HOWEVER, there are TWO seals in the spool valve unit. One is ~external, where the spool valve mates with the engine block (has the integrated metal screen). The other gasket/seal is inside the spool valve body. Buy the kit with BOTH seals & replace the internal gasket as well with the thicker aftermarket version. It's just a few bolts to pull the spool valve body apart & change the internal gasket. Mine started leaking from the internal gasket after I installed it. So, I had to pull it off again & replace the internal seal with the thicker aftermarket version. A lot easier to do both at the same time, rather than find out it still leaks & have to pull it off again.

Is this applicable to the 2005 EX-L. I'm replacing a second alternator in 5 months. I need to do the same. Mine has over 3K miles.
@acidfuzzpedals9986
@acidfuzzpedals9986 Месяц назад
@@troppe4295 I'm not sure, but I think yes. When I brought my 2007 EX-L in to the dealer to have them confirm the location of the oil leak, the service advisor asked me if I've had to replace the alternator yet. He explained that a leaking spool valve kills alternators. I assume the oil coats the windings & prevents them from cooling, which burns them out.

There is a second gasket which should be replaced . The Vtec Spool Valve should be split in half and in between the halves there is another gasket. On my Honda Odyssey 2006 that one was very brittle when I replaced. Evap can slide from the bracket without removing the 2 bolts. Thanks for taking the time to do the video.

Most 10mm hex bolts are good at 12nm. If you look across, enough manuals whether, honda, Chrysler..... The torque is not always specific to the manufacturer, unless a stretch bolt etc, it's more specific to the grade and size of the thread. There are charts around that will give you a guide. If the gasket on the front of this is that hard, the o-rings on the solenoid valve will also be up for changing. I've changed those before changing the front gasket as makes a nice mess when it leaks. Good job.

@@sueryba8623 Umm...okay...all I can say is that it never pays to be cheap and we always change all the related gaskets on a customers vehicle with OEM parts as their complaints of a leak are a bigger cost than the complaints for the extra bill. Do you happen to know if this procedure would be the same on a 2011 odyssey ex-l or how different it truly would be? Do you recommend gasket sealant by permatex to hold the gasket/seal it? Is it likely my actual valve assembly is bad or likely just the seal? I have an oil leak from there apparently Honda says and I am mechanically decent. Thank you for your time and I hope you see this.

It's worth noting this is not a VTEC spool valve. it is for the VCM system. In fact, these engines do not have actual VTEC.
@Penguin545
@Penguin545 3 года назад
Btw the application for this valve is 05-07 odyssey, 05-07 accord, 06-08 Pilot fwd only. The later years use spool valves on both the front and rear head ( one closest to the master cylinder and the other above the alternator). On the later years the spool valve leaking engine oil on the alternator will cause it to fail prematurely.

@mattwood3416 2 года назад
Would this work for the 2004 accord
@Penguin545
@Penguin545 2 года назад
@@mattwood3416 according to rock auto your 04 should not have a spool valve assembly- an 05 accord does but it’s missing in the catalog for an 04 accord. As I understand it if your black plastic engine cover days “VCM” then your engine will have a spool valve assembly on it, if it says VTEC and doesn’t mentions VCM then it should not have this valve. If you have an oil leak on your 04 accord from the back head area then I would suspect the valve cover gasket (do a whole lot with grommets and tube seals) and if that doesn’t fix it then the o-ring on the rear head for the camshaft cover cap- that cap is held in with 2 12mm fasteners. The cam caps get varnished with age and can be very difficult to remove and install which will cause your o-ring to roll or get sliced- I’ve even broke them before- might consider buying the cover with the o-ring. The cover is visible on this video and is located about 2” below the Vcm solenoid shown being removed.

Brian, you mention in the beginning of the video that this gasket fits 05-10 Odyssey but when I try to search the part number it does not appear to equate to the 2010 model. Can you confirm that it does work for all 5 model years? I am hearing from Honda that they used to sell the gasket but now they only sell the kit which I think includes the entire spool valve assembly which goes for something like $150. What you did looks pretty darn easy and would rather replace just the gasket vice the entire assembly if the gasket never changed. Thanks, great video by the way!!

The small black air box with the two hoses unclips from the tab underneath it, Unclip it. It is far easier to remove it first and then take the spool valve off instead of removing the bracket from the spool valve. When you have the spool valve off, you should remove the bolts and split it and replace the second gasket between the two halves, it is likely leaking also. There are better videos out there than this one, just do a quick search for them.

@tonpear5909 6 месяцев назад
@@bournebergeron3765Correct. Your 09 LX has the more basic system called VTEC. Its controller housing is bolted to the oil filter housing, accessible through the right front wheel well opening.
@tonpear5909
@tonpear5909 6 месяцев назад
@pedrokim7435 True, your 2010 EX doesn't have "twin bank" valve controls, but it is NOT like the system in this inaccurately titled video. Your EX has VTEC, a simpler system with a controller bolted to the oil filter housing. The VCM engine in this video was used in 05-07 Odyssey EX-L and Touring models. It has a single controller mounted to the rear of the bank 1 (firewall side) cylinder head. This controller disables cylinders 1-3 when it is active. VCM2 is an updated version of VCM used on some 08-17 Odyssey. Specifically addressing 2010 Odyssey, VCM2 is only found on EX-L and Touring models. VCM2 does have two controllers, one mounted on the front of each of the two cylinder heads. The bank 1 controller can disable cylinders 1-3 at once (like VCM), then there's a less aggressive Eco mode where bank 1 disables cylinder 3 while bank 2 disables cylinder 4. Your VTEC system just increases valve lift at high load/RPMs for increased power. VCM is more complicated; it disables cylinders during low load driving modes for increased fuel economy.

I'm getting ready to do mine & would like to know your opinion as to whether or not this is preferred, or possible detrimental to a good seal? Also, I've read the spool valve also has another internal gasket, which can also leak, and is not available aftermarket, even from Honda. After I installed the spool valve, check engine light came on in the first 4 miles. Drove it for two days and it went off on its own. Came back on with a P0946 after about 4 weeks. I also topped up my oil with high mileage mobile1 5w-30. This oils swells seals. I’m wondering if it swoll the gaskets inside the new spool valve. Could it just be that this part was defective from factory? I’m discarding engine sludge as I just finished a valve cover gasket job and those valve couldn’t have a been any cleaner.

What does a spool valve do?
@HowtoAutomotive
@HowtoAutomotive 4 года назад
It controls valve timing. With oil pressure. So it open and closes oil ports to change cam timing.

Would more frequent oil changes keep these seals soft or do they just go hard and leak because of the heat?
