In this video, I show you how I repaired the feed lips on my Ishapore 2a1. While the feed lips are a different shape on the .303 enfields, you should still be able to use the same method that I used. 8mmmauserman@gmail.com
My brothers at work all pitched in and bought me one of these cause I talk about my Dad having one when I was a kid and how much I wish I had that rifle. Anyway... I had all kinds of problems when I took it to the range and I didn’t know about tuning the magazine. Now thanks to your video (actually the only video I’ve been able to find on this), my SMLE no1 mk3 works beautifully! Thank You!
Thanks for this. Took my new No. 5 "Jungle Carbine" Rifle to the range and had failure to feed on almost every round. Assumed it was the magazine, and a quick lookup brought me to this video. Upon closer inspection, I have determined that yes, my magazine's feed lips are indeed quite bent xD
@@8mmmauserman I was, and it's able to feed now, but for some reason it doesn't seem to want to extract. The rear of the snapcaps I'm using seem to get caught on a little piece on the right of the bolt :/ Edit: After further research (because I don't know names and parts of guns too well) I discovered two things. 1.) My magazine was converted from a No. 1 mag, and I don't think it was done by the Brits. 2.) The extractor spring and arm were so dirty and gunked up it was basically locked forward
Bro this is the exact issue I have but the only differences are 1. mine doesn’t like to feed from the right 2. I have a magazine cutoff that might be screwing with it. In either case, I’ll update on whether or not your tips work! Thanks so much!
@@8mmmauserman Finally gave it a go and my girl cycles like new!!! Thanks so much for the tip- i was afraid the cutoff was fucking with fhe feeding but im glad i was wrong! using a wrench to bend the metal did the trick!
I am very late to the party on this , but just under a year ago I got a enfield MK 5 No.1 jungle carbine. I tried everything from buying a new magazine and seeing if loading with stripper clips would help the issue it didn't. Now seeing this I can hopefully get that rifle feeding properly cause it would break my heart if I had to sell it.
Hi, interesting Video. Best way to correct feed Lips before adjusting is to look into the Mag. Slot / Receiver and how the milled cuts for the lips are formed.... then look how the lips fit in the mentioned cut outs inside the receiver.... better way before bending in the wrong spot. Also "Every Magazine" has to be Hand fitted to the Individual Rifle. Don't expect that any other Magazine works without proper fitting. When you don't close the Bolt AND pull the trigger you don't necessarily have to remove the Striker. BUT to be fair i understand your Safety concerns... Have a Nice day.
Thanks for the feedback! These magazines are hand fitted. Mine is actually serial matched, but the feed lips must have gotten bent at some point. I wanted to be extra safe. Of course you can always just not pull the trigger, but we have several safety rules so that when one mistake is made, several other safes are in place. Plus, there are a lot of safety nazis on RU-vid, so I wanted to appease them lol
I used to have this issue too until I did the same procedure which helped but I would still have a lot issues with rounds getting jammed and stuff. However, I happen to buy a big box of some old Indian surplus 7.62mm and now it feeds and shoots flawlessly. I don't know why my rifle only likes the Indian stuff since I compared them to many other rounds and they look identical. I haven't had any issues with the ammo other than I have to clean the rifle thoroughly after shooting since they are berdan primed (and can't reload them). Also every round so far has actually worked unlike other rounds where there might be a round that just doesn't work. I did happen to find one round that kinda "burst" a tiny hole out the side wall after firing which I wouldn't have ever noticed since I just happen to collect that one brass and saw the interesting deformity. The surplus ammo is fine for bolt-action rifles but I wouldn't let anyone use it in a semi-auto rifle; just for safety. Now I'm just worried what will I do when I run out and there is no more Indian surplus on the market. Perhaps if I spent some more time fiddling with the mag lips I can get commercial or hand-loads to work.
Great video I need to know if I can use the same method as I have both issues(bolt misses the rim completely and the round does not feed into chamber, it pops out or jams similar to your video) with my 303 magazine trying to feed my .308 rounds. Thanks Leonard (from South Africa)
Hey Leonard! I don’t see a reason why it wouldn’t work, but I don’t have a .303 magazine. Since it is meant to feed a rimmed cartridge, you might just have a really hard time getting it to work. Does the .303 magazine seat properly and everything?
I have a sporterized No1 Mark III* that wouldn't feed at all. After working with the lips, I've got rounds 3 and 4 feeding (I only have 4 snapcaps!), but the base of the last two rounds in the magazine won't come up far enough for the bolt to catch them and run the forward. I'm wondering if the spring is weak? Seems to not have a lot of tension, and I don't know if bending it out will help or will snap the darned thing. Any suggestions?
Sounds like the spring isn’t quite strong enough, but I can’t be sure unless I had it in front of me. You could always try stretching it, and if that works, you know that’s the problem and then you could replace it. Or if you know someone with the same rifle, you could pull both apart and see how they compare.
This also works for no 4 enfields I have normal pointed bullets and cast lead ones as well and I noticed that the round need different angles for the feel lips so I have two magazines for each type of projectile I shoot
Great video. I'm having the exact same issue but neither side wants to feed 😨, I don't even know where to start, guess I'll just have to set aside some time and do some good o'l trial and error.
Bought it at a gunshow years ago (impulse buy) with little research. Chamber was good and bore looked great so I snatched it. Just realized that the serial number(s) on the magazine don't match the rifle's, no wonder the feeding issues, just going to have to tune it to this rifle then I suppose. It's a 1943 No1 mk3*.
That’s awesome! I still want to buy a 303 rifle. I think the first thing you could check is if the bolt is passing over the rims, or if it is causing them to jam, and adjust the front and rear feed lips accordingly. Be sure to give an update!
Hi i I followed what you did finally and guess what for the first time in 20 years my Lee-Enfield today magazine feeds perfectly the rear lips feeding lips were bent down when I bent them up the clip stopped pulling down when I pushed it in it felt solid I dare to push a couple of blanks through and they cycle perfectly but duh years ago I tried putting a scope mount on and on the left side underneath with a stripper clip goes in it's a small screw that I used for some screwy scope mount that never worked it's missing that's screw puts pressure on the bolt I think to make it ride smoothly I know I can get one easily but just wanted to thank you my 12 round clip used to pull out and never fit right and happy New years it worked the clip fed home doesn't pull out at all it cycles perfectly I also adjusted the front feeding lips a little bit but the real ones made it fit in the receiver perfectly for the first time in 20 years that I own this gun but me trying to put some stupid scope mount on that was only held in by one screw well I lost it it's got to be somewhere all I order one for three bucks if you know the name of the screw it might help me find one it's on the left side of receiver underneath with a stripper clip metal piece is on the receiver underneath the left side of it you'll see a little screw mine is missing and I see marks on the bolt where it was rubbing on it so I assume it helps the bolt stay tight so now I'm afraid to shoot it until I get the screw but it feeds properly
I’m glad it helped! That sounds like it could be the safety screw, or the ejector. If you look up pictures, maybe you can find out which one it is judging by the size
That you i guess makeing a target gun out of a Lee Enfield 2a is a bubba moment lol have a plastic sporting stock 2 never worked out right anyway thanks thanks again and happy New Year you'll be at a million at the end next year
Not shore what i am doing with the sporting stock not giving up on bubbaing a tatget gun it was the scope mount that did not work the stock did fit i lost so much on my last move early lead melter a few bayonets tools and other things I am not ready to get rid of any of my other things sorry but if I do you will be first in mind I promise you I have a few m1 carbine clips I don't need an AR-15 clips and other things for now I'm still in shock from losing so much in the move and again sorry I don't think I want to get rid of anything else for now
Or maybe it is "a spanner for those who haven't figured out space travel yet..." Either way we love to lovingly poke at each other, US vs Colonial/UK. I do love my Canadian, ANZAC and English allies. Love you guys! I have English, Scottish and Irish blood plus German so I feel I can get a little further than some in poking my brothers I love so much. In love of course :-)
I've spent years trying to get a feed malfunction from my Mausers and I just haven't been able to, I guess I'll have to get a Lee Enfield. HAHA just kidding. Mausers have their problems to. One is sometimes the extractors are too tight for the rim of the round to slide under the claw. real sticky feeding. GOD BLESS YOU! GOD BLESS AMERICA!! GLORY BE TO GOD!!! IN JESUS NAME WE PRAY!!!!!!!
I have to slam the bolt hard to get the rounds to feed from the magazine to the chamber, but they feed fine. Any suggestions to make the ammo feed easier?
My mag works fine except for the final bullet, it won't chamber unless i push the mag up a little, so i need to tighten the mags fit in the gun but i don't know how.
Had a very similar issue with the left side of my magazine. My issue was the follower developed a small crack on the front left corner causing the follower to get wedged to the left and down on the front corner as I was clambering a round
I have a problem with my no.4 mk1 where the last round in the mag doesnt hold in well. Itll just pop out unless another round is in the mag. I've tried bending it like in this vid, but it didnt seem to work. Any advice?
Maybe you need a new spring. If you have another Enfield see about switching them to see if that fixes the problem. If not, you may need to look online, but they shouldn’t be too expensive.
i just got repro mag for my No.4, when i get ammo for it i will be back(probably gunna be a while since the cheapest .303 i can find in Oregon is $1.50 a round)
A bit late to the party but... I got two No 4 Mk 1s, one is spitting out the top two rounds consistently, and on the 2nd rifle the first and last rounds get stuck under the extractor groove like in this video semi-consistently. Still haven't found a solution....
I had to replace an ejector spring on one of these guys. I bought one from Numrich and it was shaped primarily for the No1 which uses a slightly different form as the Ishapore spring is also bent at the top but I'm having trouble finding info on the springs. Would you know anything about that? Also, cool vid. My stock magazine has similar feed issues so I may try adjusting it again but far as I could tell the entire thing is warped and the right side has been pushed forward of the left side creating a deformity.
Did a quick google search, and unsurprisingly the extractor springs are different. I’m sorry, but I don’t really know how to help. A few options would be to shim/modify a no 1 mk3 spring to work, buy a complete bolt/bolt head and take the parts you need, or maybe try calling around to Numrich/Liberty Tree Collectors/Apex/every gun part/ etc. to see if they have specifically a 2a1 extractor spring.
@@8mmmauserman I've done some reading around on forums and apparently the springs can be bent into form, so I guess I'll continue to use some trial and error to modify the spring. Ejection seems to run sometines but others completely fails. It's also possible that my screw is a bit off, so I guess I'll play rocket surgeon until I figure it out. Thanks though.
@@theinstitute1324 Numrich sells the correct extractor spring for the 2a1. The extractor spring on my 2a1 held the case so tight it was difficult to extract the cartridge. I replaced the extractor and extractor spring, and now it works flawless. Extractor spring product # 487600. $11.25, Extractor product # 701730. $23.26. In stock at Numrich at this time.
@@orangetlr I probably should have looked a bit further on there although at the time the one I bought appeared to be the only one available. I did, however, find another site - BRPGuns, who did sell the correct extractor spring and it works like a charm.
i haven't tried this yet but my magazine is acting like it's just not seating high enough into the rifle. Doesn't like to feed from the left side, again, just likes to glide over. Have to smack the magazine up into the rifle to feed. Will investigate
I have the same gun the clip does not fit it pulls down makes it impossible to feed the little clip on the magazine is broken or something because if you push the magazine up it feeds fine but as soon as you try to fire it outside it stops feeding I think they were made for rim ammunition the guy I bought it from had five and I picked the nicest one I wish I would have picked the one that had the best fitting clip
I have that problem with some of my clips too. You may just need to try a few clips to see which works best with the rifle. You may also want to make sure that you're using the proper clips. 7.62x51 will fit in some clips that it's not made for.
Im havingissues with my smle. I got it cheap 2 yrs back fro like 400 as it seemed in really good condition. It had new front wood but an original buttstock. The magazine and revievwr match numbers but the bolt isnt nymbered it says ns which i think means rework. Anywaysit shot fine b4 not super accurate but i always hate the bolt, people say how smooth it is but indont see it. I thought maybe just cock on close sucked till i got a swedish mauser. The mauser cams the bolt shut as you push foward so you can do a smooth traditional action with tour hamd where the smle has a really long and for my gun stiff push foward into place to cock the lnow and then a sharp turn to the right almost as if its a 90 degree action. Well finally i ordered a bolt tool and im waiting for that now and greased the bolt up just to chdck and it is a really smloth bolt goinf doward and back and closing if you can do it fast remember not to try to turn early. The problem i realized though is it fed awfully rough. So i looked at mt feed ramp and notoced scratching from thebright cartridge side where the tiop meets. So i loaded up a mag and left side loaded smooth as butter stripped off easy and straight and right side i had to give a had smack to the back of the bolt to free it and then travel was rough unless you went really dast and even then its bad. So i took my mag out and for some odd reason the left front feed ramp is nice and nounded straight a slight smooth bed that looks very normal, and my right front feed lip whoch is significantly smaller is tilted down with a straight almostn90 degree bend downward in it. Im unsure how this cam even happen unless possibly loading stripper clips toohard can damsge lips? Or maybe it was like this. I mean the gun does function. The right round does aim the right way and chamber for the modt part its just a bitch to do it. I really want the matching magazine too the gun working and dont wanna mess it up. Also my mag is different from yours it has no baseplate its a solid piece
This is a 7.62 gun and you have a .303 gun. Thats why the magazine is different. A gun smith should be able to fix it pretty cheap if you don’t want to mess it up, or you could buy an after market mag to play with and keep the one that came with the gun as well. Just thoughts, if it works it works.
@8mmmauserman yeah I just bought a second original mag too see how it functions. Sadly my gun smithbretired recently as he has cancer so now I need to find a new one after years
