I wanted to share how I use my linear rail router sled. So I've made a new video about how to flatten the wood. From chopping boards to wood slabs.
1.walnut 320x1820x22mm
2.walnut 350x2220x38mm
3.wood slab 878/750x2005x52mm
4.chopping boards 220x360x25mm
Please enjoy this video!

This is so great! Thank you so much. I will be making a table using timber burls and resin soon and this looks like a great way to set up the rail sled. My table will be 1100mm wide and 1800mm long. Do you think having cross rails of 1400 will be long enough to allow the sled to reach the edges?
@makefurniture1

My cross rails are 1200mm. I have flattened the 878mm width of the slab in this video. I think so it is enough. If the sled doesn't reach the edges, there are two ways. You can move either your slab or setup like this video.

Great system... Congrats... I just put together something similar, using SBR20 rails and blocks. I noticed you're only using a single screw per block, which seems like the only way to go w/ SBR20s. (Blocks are 35mm, and rail screw holes 30mm apart). I was thinking of just putting the top rails on a 3/4" platform, and screwing each platform to the lower rail blocks, and the upper rails screwed into the platform from above. However, it looks like you have no issue with just the single screw per block. Have you seen any wobble or support issues doing it that way?
@makefurniture1
@makefurniture1 2 года назад
You have a keen eye. Yeah, I am using only one screw per block. Because I had to use existing holes. Actually, there is another chance to screw one more on the aluminum support of the rail if you can make a new hole on that. But I think the single screw is strong enough to hold the block and of course, I have no issue with that until now. And I have not experienced any flex, wobble, or support issues using this setup by this time. Thanks.

great router sled however i have a question. i am working on a 5' x 10' boardroom table and would need to build the sled large enough to do this job. figuring on using the 2000mm to span the width of the table. have you done any this long? did you notice any sagging in the middle due to the weight of the router?

I'm using 1850mm(the long ones)and 1200mm(the short ones). I haven't experienced any issues like sagging, flexing for my router until now. My linear rails are SBR20. Very nice videos you make, thank you. Can I ask you at what RPMs you set your router and what’s the depth of the bit each time you pass it over the entire piece of wood? Also, can you recommend a nice big router bit for this purpose? Thanks a lot in advance.
@makefurniture1
@makefurniture1 Год назад
The RPM depends on the material and the operating conditions(the diameter of the bit etc.) My router, GOF 1600 CE has 6-speed steps. 1 is low and 6 is high speed. And my bit's diameter is about 32mms. I usually set it at 2~3. It would be best if you did testing before the operation. The depth of the bit is the same as RPM. I wanted to buy a FREUD Solid wood surfacing bit but it's too expensive. www.aliexpress.com/item/4000070506541.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.240.6e321802gId1mh This is the same as mine. Nice setup for flattening slabs. I noticed you did not secure the rails or the work to the bench. Have the rails or the work ever moved during a cut and if not what keeps them from moving? I would be concerned the weight of the slab alone is not enough. Your jig for holding the cutting board slabs is excellent. No tools needed to secure the work in the jig, just some wedges.

I have not failed to secure the work during a cut until now. It is important to secure the work for flattening slabs like a lightweight. That's why I used CA glue on the no.1 slab. And the no.2,3 are enough heavy without any wedges or CA. Thank you.

Well, I haven't tried drawing something with this yet. I guess if some drawings are so simple they could be drawn by this. That's so irritating I guess.

any problems with the rails moving around? The only flat place I would have would be on the concrete floor?
@makefurniture1
@makefurniture1 2 года назад
Nope, I guess even the concrete floor is okay. If the surface of the concrete floor is terribly uneven, you should put flat 2x4 or something similar between the rail and the floor.

Why you need such a large rail? Push the wood save you space and bucks.
