Part 1/4, giving you insight into what every control does and how to coordinate them to fly smoothly. It's a VERY simplified crash-course in helicopters. Yes you can go inverted briefly. But for your early training, maybe hold up on doing that. Get control first, the you can practice acrobatics.
Also, the flight model is early early access. Strong bets on the flight model's going to change and tweak for a while.

Been flying the Ka-50 for 8-9 years and I didn't even know that the crabbing was more aerodynamically efficient. I noticed that tendency happening in certain situations but assumed it was wind. Sometimes I don't try to fight it but usually prefer to correct it if there is anything but a short waypoint leg to fly to. The problem in the KA-50 is that there is no "flight path indicator"/"total velocity vector" that I can use to know that I have the correct heading for my flight path. I can only see that the nose is pointed at a heading so it's the way I have to fly.
@volkvoort
@volkvoort 2 года назад
The Ka-50's a bit different though. The crabbing comes from the tail rotor, not just yawing the tail against the main rotor, but also effectively slightly pushing you sideways off course. So you can fix that with a little bank, a little rudder or both. With the Ka-50 there is no tail rotor. I think at faster airspeeds there might be some differences in induced flow between the rotors from the changes in separation left & right, but not sure if that would or should cause crabbing. It's entirely possible that the Ka-50 travels straight through the air, with the slip ball slightly to the right at faster speeds. There should be a video on that coming some time, but still need to run a bunch of tests and check some theories. For what it's worth the auto-turn / route modes seem to prefer traveling straight.

It's definitely comforting to see that I wasn't the only one with helicopter experience who struggled all the same. It's getting better a week in, but it was a rough first few flights. I'm kind of worried how I'll fly once I try and switch back to the Mi-24.

@@volkvoort IRL surroundings and beverage... LOL okay. Makes sense. I have certainly knocked over a drink or two while in VR. One issue I do have is that I have a notebook in which I have written down all the key commands, not just in flight sims like DCS, but all my driving sims as well. That's probably 60-70 pages of stuff that I certainly can't remember all of (especially at my age) and I obviously can't see to read when I have my VR headset on. Don't have a solution for that one yet.

@@JodiTrommler Custom kneeboard. As in make the right scale/dimension png files of your notes, then add them to the kneeboard folder. That way you can access it in-view (in the VR itself). There are a few tuts on how to size/make the kneeboard pages and where to put them. There's at least one mod/tool to do it as well, though I've forgotten chunks, so best I can say is google for that.

Thanks for the great tutorial. Controlling the Apache in the air is way harder than the KA-50. The latter is much more fun and easier to fly. If DCS truly modeled them accurately, the KA-50 would easily over maneuver the Apache.

Thanks. On the agility thing I'm not sure. If one goes purely by acrobatics, the Apache has done some really impressive stuff, though of course one needs to differentiate Deltas from Echo models. That said I recently saw a vid of one of the first two V-80s pretty much just a leaf in wind and doing some crazy stuff.

Hey mate this was fantastic, I was hoping to clear up something though. From my understand the real life AH-64 cyclic does not re-centre but just holds where you leave it. Does this apply to the anti torque pedals as well? Or do they re-centre, I saw you mention they have a centre "detent" area but didn't know if this is what you meant.
@volkvoort
@volkvoort 2 года назад
The Force Trim release sets where the (I think magnetic) locks keep the stick in place. Or rather it sets the new centre position of the IRL stick. So less likely for some sudden bump to move it from there, and the further you move it from that position, the more resistance you'll feel on your stick moving it from that position. The IRL pedals do also trim like that apparently. As for the detent thingy - put on the Right-Control + Enter controls grid. Then gradually move your pedals (or whatever you use for pedals) from one side to the other. You'll see at the centre, the pedals indicator stops moving for a second, like it sticks or hits a detent. So if you're transitioning your anti-torque pedal from e.g. the 'usual' left side and crossing over to the right, you'll need to give a little bit extra input to cross that hump in the centre.
@teggy689
@teggy689 2 года назад
@@volkvoort ah okay, I have a virpil set up so I removed the springs from the joystick base. It is loose and flops around but at least it doesn't re-center by itself now. I have springs in the rudder pedals as well that re-centre it so might be better to remove them as well. Thanks for the help!

Thank you Volk, as someone who can easily hover the Gazelle with no axis curves, I was floored by how much of a challenge the Apache currently is to fly. There will have to be quite the evolution of the flight model before anyone is flying it like the air shows any time soon.
@ArchOfficial
@ArchOfficial 2 года назад
The Gazelle is incredibly badly correlated and doesn't even qualify as a sim model arguably, so I don't think it'll have much to do with a decent model. While I'm sure ED's 64D model has its issues, consider if you'd be able to fly it like in the air shows even if the model was perfect but you've only flown it for a few hours/days and are using significantly worse equipment than what the real thing comes with.
@ziljanvega3879
@ziljanvega3879 2 года назад
@@ArchOfficial the SMEs all said the Gazelle FM was accurate too. I’m sure in many regimes the Apache is ballpark
@ArchOfficial
@ArchOfficial 2 года назад
@@ziljanvega3879 The Gazelle FM is objectively inaccurate. It doesn't line up to any of the flight data at just about any part of the envelope. If you search for "A Brief Data-Driven Look at the DCS Gazelle Flight Model" you might find a video about it. Having done simulation models for vehicles, I can tell you from personal experience that it almost doesn't matter what your testers think about the vehicle; it's not a primary way of evaluating the model. You need to actually correlate it. The feedback you get from very skilled and attentive professionals is usable, but they don't always even agree with eachother when it comes to the real vehicle. Feedback is at best vaguely indicative if the hardware isn't almost identical and realistic in function; which none of the civvie flight sim hardware is to begin with. I don't know how good the AH-64D is in DCS, but considering it can allegedly do barrel rolls with a full loadout, I am skeptical that most of the model correlates.
@ziljanvega3879
@ziljanvega3879 2 года назад
@@ArchOfficial I'm familiar with every video ever produced on the Gazelle, as I've been flying it for years. I'm sure at some point, someone acquainted with aerodynamics and engineering will produce a similar video on the Apache. There are too many bizarre instabilities not seen on any other chopper and within the standard flight envelope for it to be accurate. Apart from the twitchiness of the baseline curves and uncommanded rolls as if though balancing a ball on another ball when at high torque and not in a hover, the idea that the chopper would just *barely* be able to lift it's most common load, leaving evasive maneuvers as a non-option when in combat loadout seems almost unbelievable.
@ArchOfficial
@ArchOfficial 2 года назад
@@ziljanvega3879 Like I said, I doubt it is well correlated. Ka-50 and A-10C needed quite large changes to the model years later, and those are considered to be the good models. F-16C initially was incredibly bad. My point, however, was that even if the model is perfect, things will likely be too difficult purely due to hardware and sensory limitations. You're also kind of comparing yourself and your limited flights hours to the top talent in the world, which is not so reasonable.

Keep working at it! I've been flying the Ka-50, Mi-24 and Mi-8 for a while now, so I thought I was pretty solid with helicopters...but my first few days in the Apache were an absolute nightmare. Now about a week later of on and off flying, I'm pretty comfortable without needing the display indicator on screen, and honestly, it's pretty rare that I use much trim at all. I might trim it a bit nose-down when I'm in forward flight just to not have to sit and hold the stick so much, but other than that, it's only been pretty small adjustments.

Is there a way to make the rotor spin clockwise (view from above), or a trick to invert yaw and collective? In Europe helicopters are inverted and as a pilot irl i won't be able to fly like this or i might take the habit and make a mistake irl :(

Not that I'm aware of. One of those cases of just mentally prepping before you hop in the seat as to which side to compensate for that power change. Hopefully your flight sim setup 'feels' different enough from IRL that the habit doesn't transfer.

First seat of cockpit also same? Backseat of the Helicopter also called RIO like fighter jet?
@volkvoort
@volkvoort Год назад
In the Apache, the back seater is typically called "Pilot". The front seater the "Co-Pilot Gunner"/CPG. In the F-14 specifically the backseater is the RIO/Radar Intercept Officer, though in the F-15's it's WSO/Weapon Systems Officer. So the naming of especially the 'second seat' changes even for airframes from the same country. Some attack helicopters also have the pilot in the front seat and the second seater/weapons person in the back, so it varies.

Usual suspects for the weapons are probably Master Arm, Disable the Cyclic Trigger Guard, WAS (select the weapon - specifically with the TEDAC or Cyclic you intend to be pulling the trigger on), putting on the Laser (for the Hellfires) and if you're using George, then consent to fire or free fire. Doing it by feel is exactly what one needs to develop and practice - so right track there. Some of the help videos are people that have been flying it for months, often on sticks with extensions, nice gimbals etc. so don't be discouraged by not flying it like them early on. Hope it starts clicking for you soon.

Hover mode symbology for example doesn't show the artificial horizon.

It just baffles me how hard they would make such an advanced helicopter to fly. I have a hard time believing hovering is this hard in the ah-64 in real life.
@volkvoort
@volkvoort 2 года назад
Think it's a combination of not having the hardware that's in the real aircraft (i.e the stick/pedals) that lock in place with that same range of motion, not having the feeling in your seat when there's acceleration/tilting and well, early access module. I didn't get much time in it last night, but it did feel a little easier to control after the patch.

Shitty equipment, which is what most simmers are still using unfortunately, will make even the best model seem inaccurate and maybe even almost uncontrollable. Meanwhile folks like you with decent enough equipment don't struggle nearly as much. For some reason simmers never really acknowledge this. It's the exact same sentiment in car simulations too. Maybe once decent entry-ish level equipment like the VKB NXT become more common and old garbage is phased out this sentiment will change a little bit.
