How To Fly The Standard Overhead Join | Bristol To Kemble | PA28 Flight Vlog

As a PPL holder I have to fly regularly and within legal timeframes in order to maintain flying currency.
In this currency flight to Kemble a little laziness creeps in as I hope to fly a straight in approach to Runway 08 or at least cut in on a right base join.
Upon reflection I decide to actually practice and talk through the Standard Overhead Join. This is by far the safer option and generally preferred when joining aerodromes in the UK unless otherwise instructed.
Kemble remains the UK airfield I have visited the most to date. Training at Bristol meant I often flew to Kemble for currency flights, circuit practice, solo consolidation and for dead reckoning navigation.
Please note this video is intended for entertainment only and for those who wish to follow my journey. Other pilots should always seek the professional advice of their flight school or a qualified person.

An excellent video, Chris. I've only recently got my licence, in a C152. Landed on your channel looking for differences to a PA28. Your radio work and checklists etc were great, thanks!

Thanks Tim, although I personally felt I landed a little flat. Plenty of room for improvement

Great video Chris. I started my flying lessons at Filton and also worked there for many years on the Air Ambulance. When it closed I continued my training at Kemble and love the airfield. Nice one.

A nice little trip to Kemble👍😊 I think most joins are overhead descending dead side at Kemble, rarely do you get a straight in as they're often so busy with diverse aircraft - microlights to business jets (although they tend to get a straight in🙄😄👍) - in the circuit.

Thanks Muso, yes at the present time Kemble requests that all GA traffic join overhead. However, they currently operate as an AFIS, so they only control aircraft on the ground and not in the air. I hold my hands up and admit in this flight to laziness and complacency, originally planning to cut in on a right base join. In the end I think better of it and perform an overhead join. A good pilot is always learning!

@@CJThePilot Yes you're right they are under AFIS control rules. I was always taught, never to assume (makes an ass of you and me😄), with Kemble to go over the numbers (08 or 26) at 2000ft it's easier to approach from the South (M4 side) I guess🤔😊 All's well that ends well though you adapted to the situation👍😊😊 I've seen some shocking joins at Kemble, including aircraft landing in both directions (out of hours), when whilst marginal, it was clear which way the wind was blowing 😲🤔🤔🙄😊

Excellent video Chris and some really competent flying. One thing I did note though was you correctly climbed over R105 the restricted area to the south west of Kemble to 2,300 feet but as someone who has been caught out before it is height above the surface. Not sure what the AMSL height was at the RA but Bowldown the little strip just to the west is at 500ft AMSL. In no way a criticism as I have busted them before by not taking into account the terrain AMSL so just an observation. OH join always safest and who wants to get their quicker with a base join anyhoo. Keep up the great vids loved it.

Thank you very much Terry for the kind words. I really appreciate you taking time to watch my video and I hope you enjoyed it as I always enjoy watching your content! At the time of writing the upper limits of danger areas, prohibited and restricted airspace can all be found in UK AIP ENR 5.1. R105 (Highgrove House and Tetbury) has an upper limit of 2,000ft altitude. At 2,300ft altitude I had a nice amount of clearance. I hope that helps!

@@CJThePilot Thanks Chris, R105 is noted on the chart as SFC-2000ft? Happy to be corrected though.

Yes correct Terry, SFC - 2,000ft. The upper limit of 2,000ft is altitude. I hope that helps!

I prefer not to think of it as being about correcting people. It's about sharing knowledge for the benefit of all. I hope I come across as a very humble pilot. I believe humility is one of the most important traits. I'm genuinely chuffed to have come up on your watch list. It would be a real privilege to fly with you one day and learn from your experience

Nice flight and great educational video. Was it the camera, or was your up and down wind leg quite wide? I did some flying lessons at Filton when I worked there. Nice long and quiet runway back then.

Thanks Simon. Yes possibly the camera. I may have flown a fairly wide circuit as I'm consciously avoiding noise sensitive areas on the ground. Filton must have been a lovely place to fly, such a shame it's no longer active

I've just started flying again at B&W after a 4 year hiatus. Hoping to finish my PPL by the end of the summer. Just curious, how much does a short flight like this cost with everything included? Cheers

First of all, good for you Sir. I recognise your name, which must be from my own PPL training as I did mine 2018 - 2019. The only reason I had to wait until 2020 to pass was due to weather and lockdown! Just enjoy the experience for now. B&W have fantastic instructors, Martin and Jonathan are very good. If you want to know anything in the meantime I'm happy to help and the best place to contact me is to message me direct via my Facebook page: facebook.com/CJThePilot
