This is a complete walkthrough video about 3D modeling a fossilized jaw bone using Macroscopic Solutions Macropod PRO 3D focus stacking and photogrammetry system. The specimen is highly reflective, difficult to contrast and oddly shaped. See how we efficiently photograph, batch focus stack. post process and assemble our 3D model using Agisoft Metashape. Mark also demonstrates a few common masking techniques and will show you how to add a scalebar to your model.
See us 3D model something with a SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY: • Focus Stack and 3D Mod...

Cool video! What gear do you use?

Great lesson, I learned some stuff! I have some questions: Have you tried internal focus stacking in Canon or Olympus (OM) cameras? What is the hardware that you are using to control the rotation/stacking? What camera and lens combination are you using? I know someone mentioned cross polarization below, I was going to ask the same thing. When I create a ultra high quality model, I set the poly count to custom and then put 0 in the count which eliminates any decimation. One other trick for masking I have used is Photoshop's select>subject which seems to work nearly perfect in most cases. Thanks so much for this, just subscribed!

Internal stacking doesn’t provide me or my clients the magnification they sometimes desire. The future may move in that direction and then any innovations we create will relate to speed of capture and lighting.

Really cool setup! My guess is you would get a cleaner result using the "medium" quality setting instead of "ultra high" when building the mesh using depth maps. That has been my experience.

That’s interesting. I haven’t tried it. Do you know why the result would be cleaner or had that just been your experience?

@@macropod Just my experience. It's a bit counter-intuitive but I'm guessing that the ultra high setting is a bit too sensitive to "noise" in the input information.

How many thousands do you charge per scan?

Hi there, thank you for your honest and direct how to video. I have learnt allot and am left inspired. Just one question, why don't you use cross polarization to get rid of spectral highlights?

I’ve just never achieved better results when polarizing. In hindsight, I think this might have been in oversight of mine with respect to this particular specimen. I’ll have a new video ready that I’m posting today.
