How to Fold Your Stuck GCI Outdoor Chair

I bought two GCI Outdoor Sports Chairs from Dick's Sporting Goods. They're good chairs, but after having them out in my yard for a while, I noticed I couldn't get them to close when I wanted to fold them up. I searched online on GCI's web site, on the Dick's web site, and on Amazon. Dozens of other people had the same problem. This seems to be a flaw with these chairs. Unfortunately, GCI has not been very helpful. They direct you to send an email to warranty@gcioutdoor.com. I thought they should have published a video or instructions with the same information that they claim they're giving customers via email correspondence. Why make people send an email and wait for a reply? So I figured out how to fold up the chairs on my own and I made this video.

Thanks! As a big and tall person, this is by far the most comfortable folding chair I have seen. Is is also by far the the hardest to fold.

Our friends at a beach picnic gave up on their GCI chair and left it with us because they couldn't close it. I just watched your video and IT WORKED!! The key is to lubricate the sticky points and have that mallet ready. I keep opening and closing the chair to make it smoother to fold. Thanks for posting!!

I feel so validated, reading so many others have this issue. Like others have said, this is by far the most supportive and comfortable chair I’ve owned, so I was disappointed when it stuck. Thank you for your video, and for the other suggestions people left in the comments

43 years as a building contractor and this chair had me flustered. I was trying to no break something, but IF I keep this chair, I will carry a rubber mallet. Really!

Many thanks for posting this how-to video. Seems like the aluminum coating on the chair leg scrapes when you open and close the chair, and this gets caught underneath the bracket causing the chair to stick open. GCI needs to own in up to this problem instead of running away and sticking their head in the sand.

P.S. FYI, white lithium grease spray is a higher quality lubricant than the WD-40 silicon spray. Lasts longer, as well.

The sunscreen on the bottom back joints worked like a charm! We had beach sand stuck in ours. No need for a mallet. Thank you for sharing this video!

Just to let you know, sunscreens are actually carcinogenic chemicals. The system is deliberately poisoning people for population control. I eliminated processed sugar, artificial, vac scenes, all pharmaceuticals including over the counter pain relievers, fast food, chemical deodorants & perfumes laced with carcinogenic chemicals. If you can smell your laundry detergent you are smelling CHEMICALS! Aluminum is also carcinogenic & so is plastic. I haven't had cold or flu symptoms in probably close to 10 years. These symptoms are not caused by a viral infection they are detox symptoms.

After losing about five pounds and straining a couple muscles to open my chair, I came this close to leaving it on the curbside. Finally found your video after and just slathered the joints in WD-40. It practically opened on its own (may be a good or bad thing in the end). THANK YOU.

Thanks Chris. My wife and I finally got it open and closed at beach in CA yesterday but it was not easy. Since watching your video, I have used WD on it and now it opens/closes with ease.

I didn’t need to wack mine but I did just spray some Wd40 on the plastic parts described and it opens and closes so easy now! Thanks!

Just purchased one of these chairs.... for anyone interested, they have changed the design of the sliders, they are no longer oval and tight around the legs, they are now round, and not tight against the legs..... should eliminate the binding problems.

I would use silicone spray instead of WD40 as it will evaporate in time.

thank you it worked. Took a pairs of these to camp and spent more time trying to fold em than I did packing everything else. both chairs had same one side pipe jammed which needs 🔨 each time.

We used spray sunscreen at the beach and it worked. For anyone trapped at beach trying to leave to close this chair.

I have had to grab the sliders at the back of the arms and lift them up as i slide open/close the chair. Its like they are binding. Will try lubing the sliding parts and see if that helps. Wife has banned GCI chairs in our house once these are gone.

I have the Roadtrip Rocker and it looks a lot like the chair in the video. I simply stand behind the chair where Christopher is standing at the beginning of the video. The I reach down and pull the front edge of the seat toward me to close it. Give it a try as it may work for this model too.
