It's august 2016 and the lobster mushrooms are in full swing here in Minnesota! In this video I pick some prime lobster mushrooms and show you what to look for to identify them and where to find them.
I knew that this was going to be a great year for lobsters with all the rain that you had. I normally get over to MN about the last week of July but was not able to get out there this year.
Awesome video. Fun fact: Hypomyces lactifluorum: The "lobster mushroom" is actually a fungus that has parasitized a Russula or Lactarius mushroom. There's really no mistaking it: the fungus creates a beautiful, bright orange covering over the mushroom, the surface of which is rather hard, and dotted with tiny pimples. Eventually, the fungus even begins to transform the shape of the host mushroom, twisting it into odd contortions."
Holy moly! I am suffering some serious Lobster Envy there Mr. Mackner! You hit the Mother load for sure. I have gone out only a couple times this summer and only gleaned enough to have a meal each trip. I always eat them as I find them.....have you frozen any lobsters, and did it work out well?
They wont be up yet where I live sadly. 1-2 months depending on the heat/rain and Chantrelles and lobsters come out same with Clubs. Can't wait til mushroom season.
I think I saw some lobster mushrooms in the wood in Nov., but I'm not sure if I got the right identification or will pick them next time I see them again. Many people die of eating mushroom from wild every year.
Awesome! I've found morels, chanterelle, giant puff balls, chicken of the woods...but not lobster yet :( I'm going to try the Cold Spring, MN area as I'm headed up there for a wedding...but where to look???
We must not have Lobster or Chicken of the woods here in lower Alabama ? But we do have Lobster and Chicken Lol And we do have Chanterelles I eat plenty of them from my yard.
@@330Maniac Is it wonderful to have youtube vidoe! It fells like in a time-machine we went back to the past! I love mushroom hunting soooo much, and I canned over 20 jars hen of the woods and yellow chanterelle this year! I'm glad that I found your channel.
Lucky! I bought a small package of dehydrated lobster shrooms today for $4 but I live in a damn dry desert city . N ur finding pounds of them for free! I hate where i live!😒
I found a PURE WHITE one with no false gills and posted it on FB in the : North American Mycological Association. I salvage the old stinky ones that are soggy changing to purple and dry them a special way. To me they taste delicious.
HI. I'm asking if I can download your video and reupload it on to my channel. In the video it would give you credits. It's a win-win as it gives you some exposure with my subscribers and it gives me content...plus I love the video; I live in Vancouver near Stanley Park and there' an incredible variety of mushrooms here.
There are poisonous Russula and Lactarius species. You must be able to identify the host species or risk poisoning. Lobsters are not something to mess around with otherwise.
Mainiac Gardener there have been isolated incidents of mushroom poisoning from the host mushroom in lobsters but research has proven that the incidents occured in people who were sensitive to fungus and therefore more susceptible to the poisoning. Basically there's a better chance of you winning the lottery than being poisoned by a lobster shroomie.
