How to Force Patina Copper Items: Featuring Tactile Turn Writing Instruments!

A company that I covered at Blade Show 2019 was an edc/writing instrument manufacturer called Tactile Turn. They are the makers of fine writing instruments in many styles and materials. These pens and pencils are the perfect addition to an EDC kit...and in my case, totally upgrade my notebook system.
In this video, I customize my pencil by adding a patina using ammonia, vinegar, and sea salt. This effect makes a gorgeous marbled blue look that sits on top of the copper. I am very pleased with the results and wanted to share this with you so you can enjoy customizing your own EDC items!

Thanks!! It was one of those projects...am I going to ruin my beautiful pencil, or enhance it?? I am very happy with how it turned out! I use it every day and it's wearing in very nicely...slowly exposing a bit more copper in the areas with rub and wear. Thanks for watching!

Awesome project looks great. I’ve got a copper tactile pen that I bought a couple of years back that I’m going to try this on

Sweet! It wears off eventually, but the good thing is you can add it right back on! Have fun with it!

Technical professionals and their writing utensils. My grandfather, my dad, and myself all worked in engineering and we all had our fancy writin irons. That one looks nice like that. The tuner of mechanical pencils. The test will be to see if it stains a nice white shirt. Kinda reminds me of the resin pens and pencils without the high gloss. That has a more natural appearance. Nice job Eric. Good project.

@outerlimitless 5 лет назад
Haha, yes, writing utensils are definitely important!! It's almost like a reverse patina...now that it is evenly coated with patina, portions will rub off with use. I'm not sure about staining a pocket, but I keep mine in the loops of my leather notebook cover. Fun project for sure!

@@outerlimitless Consider conformant coating. The only caveat is that it will give it a glossy finish.

That's very cool! 👍 Btw, you are correct... it is definitely science. 😃 I think what you meant to say is it's not an "exact" science. I saw a similar process using ammonia; however, a Sharpie marker was used to draw designs so the marked areas would not patina. I'm just beginning to learn some of these techniques and find it very fascinating so thank you very much for sharing your experiment.😊
@outerlimitless

That sounds cool...I like the masking idea with the sharpie...it's fun to experiment!
@tammygurl64
@tammygurl64 2 года назад
@@outerlimitless I agree! 👍 I love to experiment too. 😃 I did my very first flame painted copper earrings the other day. I overdid it 1st time and had to pickle them clean and start over but then they turn out pretty good. Can't wait to try some other stuff. Hmm... 🤔 I wonder if your process could be combined with flame painting? I bet they could if you flame painted first, taped over it in a spiral for example to protect the colors, and then do your process. Something to think about!😃

Hey man, Great tutorial! I’m about to patina a guitar rosette for an acoustic guitar I’m building while in isolation. Can you please list the brand and product of the wax you used? I love how the finish turned out and I would like that to happen to mine.

I would suggest looking into clear coats... you'll want to really lock that patina in permanently. Practice on some pennies and then clear them. If you can carry a handful of them without the patina rubbing off, you've done it right. My pencil patina rubs off with use. The clear will be a better option in my opinion
@icpfann
@icpfann 2 года назад
@@outerlimitless Would clear coat replace both the wax and the oil you used?
@michaeljohnson9010
@michaeljohnson9010 2 года назад
@@icpfann hey man i see you never got a reply, i am just now learning to patina, but i do know as an experienced painter you definitely don't want to wax or oil it before clear coat cause that would prevent the clear coat from bonding properly. like he said in his comment it would be good to experiment with pennies and i would say to get multiple different clear finishes like matte, semi gloss and gloss to see what result you like best. each one will def give you a different vibe
@icpfann
@icpfann 2 года назад
@@michaeljohnson9010 Thanks! I am currently letting both my bronze pens patina naturally and they look really good. I almost wish I had more use for pens so I could justify collecting more.

My copper pen has gotten a decent good looking patina by just using it overtime I don’t use oil I might wipe it ounce in awhile it’s gotten a cool mixture of darkness’s with a few shiny parts in the spiral mid part from what I’ve seen a little hand sweat while not wiping it down to often seems to work well but will take longer but it’s your patina from use. Which I like. Definitely a cool idea hope u like the patina blue wouldn’t be my color but it looks great if u like blue or at least more than copper I personally love the copper color don’t suffocate or blow up playing with all those chemicals maybe a fan would help👍🏻✌🏻. I worked for a plumbing company for around 6 yrs and love the copper look reminds me of those days we’re drinking and having ladies help me relieve stress 😉 was all I cared about🤡..
@outerlimitless
@outerlimitless 5 лет назад
I am hoping this will be a reverse wear in, where the patina will slowly wear off to reveal more copper...I hear you on the blue, but this looks so cool...how well it covered and how evenly it finished.
@barrybueler3356

Definitely different and without a book on it or videos like this I wouldn’t even know where to start so it cool to try new things anyway that’s how we learn good luck hopefully over time it comes together for what u want great video I learned something today now I can go smoke and sleep 😃.

If you're wondering what it looks like, much of the patina rubs off eventually. But simply re-apply and it'll be the same as I made it in the video.

Question... Once this is done... Can you use a Copper cleaner and revert back to the shiny stuff??
@outerlimitless
@outerlimitless 4 года назад
I think to a certain extent...but certainly sanding or abrasives like Brillo pads or something like that would do it. Since the video I have used mine every day and it's fairly worn down at this point.

Trying this on copper scales for a knife. If i use the carnuba wax or another sealant will i be able to remove it if I decide i dont like it?

My patina has worn quite a bit at this point. You'll probably need to reapply at some point on the knife. I like the worn look personally...

@@breadloaf4619 you could clear coat it and it'll stay indefinitely, or if you let it rub off I guess it depends how much you use it
