How to Form Footings part 1

We pulled off the Project 150 to put in a few foundations. We'll be back to that job shortly.
This video is the first of a few that document the foundation process for 2 homes. These are both daylight or walk out basements. After determining grade, the excavating contractor digs down and blows out the site level. As you'll see as we go, this job will have 10' poured concrete walls across the front and then step down to 2' walls in the back.
We get into forming the footings in this video, but will get into more detail on the details as we go through the process. Thanks for watching! Please remember that I'm not showing the way it should be done, but just the methods that work well for us.

You made a joke at the end about just watching awesome framer videos as a pick me up, but that is what I think every time I put one on, not even kind of joking. After doing miscellaneous carpentry for almost 20 years, I swapped over to programming, and now there’s just something so relaxing about watching the kinda work I’ve been familiar with for so long. Great quality content, great attitude, and not worried about winning any speed records, just getting it done right. 🤘

New to the channel. Long time foundation guy here. Have you ever tried string lining your building corners then having the labor come behind and build it? Typically we string line the whole perimeter of the foundation wall then build the footing to whatever the proper toe is. Fast and easy and you don't have to mess around straightening the forms. Even the simplest of laborers can come behind and throw up the form boards off the string as well. Can also use it to mark your ribbon boards for your verts. Anyways nice work. Different approaches are always nice to see now and again.

Hi Tim, great video. Thanks for sharing. How do you or the excavation contractor decide how deep to dig before you build your forms? Also great advice on doing things you enjoy. My dad says that the work will be there when you get back!

Thanks! Basically we stake the corners of the lot out before excavation and shoot elevation at each corner. Then its just a judgement call between the lowest and tallest. We always discuss it with the excavating contractor too. They often have a whole lot more experience and are a great resource.

Good question. We have the property pins, which were surveyed and set. They are the original. Then our site map shows where the house needs to be. Since the house is smaller than the setback, we have the flexibility to site the house in where it'll look the best in relation to the neighbors.

The drone photo actually reveal that some portions of footings ( which are quite complex and fragmented to put in place to be fair) are not perfectly straight and at a square angle. Small details here and there. Likely not relevant in the end. But looking at how this unfolded, I can see how an aerial photo, as the one you took, could help to spot those small imperfections and by downloading the image to a laptop on the spot, you can actually spot if there are imperfections and rectify with a 20-30 minutes of extra work. I am not trying to criticize your methods that seem to be as thorough as they can be, but I am just wondering if a further improvement could be made and worth the extra time. How is a guy who works this hard, and burns so many calories, 50lbs overweight? I would love to see what he eats. I went from 240lbs to 163lbs by changing my eating the past two years, and I did ZERO exercise or hard labor besides cleaning my house and cooking food for myself.

@@JWB671 at 58 and a 1/2 y.o. I've found it a little tougher to lose the two or twenty-eight pounds gained from lack of doing nothing during the plandemic,but it's possible just gotta exert more energy because changing my diet won't happen.
