Interesting! Did you/your guys ever trim down the brim at all? It mentioned something done like that in Gradys "Boocoo Dinky Dow: my vietnam war". How the b/ball caps were almost universally disliked. Was that only for SF guys or did others follow suit? :) forgive the questions, interested in learning this from an actual eyewitness and not some speculative 3rd party or article. I have a bush hat that I was given post training, more like those buckets that SADF and SAS are happy with and the brims tend to be cut down very tight to the crown. Common to find in Iraq. Fold up the front for that Confederate sharpshooter look 😅whilst keeping your neck and ears etc covered. I stitched a reflective panel in the top (reverse) with an IR patch as well so (if needed) punch inside out. Try and save from getting propelled into the next life by an eager bird thinking your bush meat. Thanks for your time sir! Appreciate it 🫡
@@Hardrada88 My boonie hat wearing days only lasted a couple months...switched to the dew-rag. Would wear one when back at the firebase to fend off the sun. We have one E5 in our unit that wear a boonie hat pinned up in the front. He looked like a cavalry soldier from a movie. It was a hazard wearing anything on your head that blocked your vision, left right up or down. Walking in the jungle with the brim of a hat blocking your vision for shit above your head was sure-fire way of getting hit by a something like a swinging mace.
@maddogwillie1019 Not sure why anyone would sacrifice vision and risk that to look 'cool'..pinned up at the front looks cool enough and you can see hah. Similar to yourself though, they were only worn on base really especially the wide brim boonies. In SA we'd wear the shorter brim out in the bush though, think the idea was to break up a silhouette but it helped against the sun when you werent undercover. Anyway thanks for your reply, appreciate your time. Glad you made it home
In Danang early in the war (1963) the Marine NCOIC gave me a boonie that he had someone make from a shelter half. Green side cammo out, brown inside. Still have it but worn and faded as me.
Make sure that the brim is cutting off ALL of your peripheral vision. Remember, if you don't know what you're doing, at least try to look cool doing it...
Its mean for dripping water off your head as far as I'm aware. Never had an issue with it "cutting off ALL" of my peripheral vision, a few 1SGT thing to say might I add, lemme make sure to wear my merils on patrol for you too firstsausage
To each there own. What I most agree with from this video is "Who cares?" I couldn't care less what someone thinks I look like when wearing a boonie. What I like most about them is how easy they are to stow in a pocket and how easy it is to shape them up to whatever activity I'm doing in the moment. Sometimes I want complete peripheral vision, other times I want more shade from the sun for my eyes. Stitching it up for a particular "look" just makes it less versatile. Who cares what the hell it looks like? Is it making you more effective in what you are doing?
One thing I did with my boonie, we wore them unauthorized on a particular deployment, was to remove the outer trim fabric on the brim, then cut the first bunch of material out, down to the first threaded stitching. Then, sewed that outer trim fabric back on. The Army likes their brims WAY too wide, lol. That made it a little trimmer, and looked better than the floppy issue one.
Some new generation infantry tacticool fad. My generation were practical infantrymen and never wore our boonie caps to look fadlicious and sexy. We wore them so we could see on patrol while giving us protection from weather and adding to our camouflage.
Tactical fashion is a thing now. In the 70's we worn bush covers, don't know went the proper slang went to boonie. After 10 days on an OP with only one c-rat can per day because water and radio batteries were more important , we were focused on keeping the radio up and calling in our air strikes. None of us were concerned about whether some lance corporal thought we looked fashionable in our chapeau.
I promise you, most guys dont care how you wear it. You can wear it every which way, as long as you keep the sun off you. Ive seen my battalion XO with a comical large brim boonie cover. He stitched different boonie cover brims together
I kept mine flat back in the day when I was in boat platoon. Also, the strap under the chin kept it on your head going through the surf, especially in Puerto Rico
I use a wire in all my boonies, it adjusts to all practical task you like. As long as you are not planning to put the hat into a pocket. But you can still cut the wire in half or several pieces to make it more storable. To me the boonie is used for purpose only - rain, sun, shadow, camo etc. I really like goretex boonies. And I renew the waterproofing with spray on all my canvas ones, every now and then.
Rangers had the topside corners rolled slightly up like little horns, the back of the brim angled up, and the front brim crested in the subtle W shape.
I have a Desert Storm Boony and I got it from my cousin who served then and he gave his top to me plus a few other things and I only have the boony left and I wear every time I'm outside since I'm bald and I wouldn't give it up for anything, because I have a great deal of respect for the military and my cousin served in the Marines until he retired.
When I used it I always started by cutting the edge to make it less regular. I boiled it to "break its shape" and dried it on my head. The French army didn't really like us using them in the 1980s... But we always had one on us bought from a military surplus 😁.
Haircut enthusiast here. The sides of your head refers to the parietal ridge, while I’d say you meant the occipital bone. Great video! Helped me with my new boonie!
What's the point of this? Especially cutting off the brim on the back? I want to cover the back of my head from the sun when i wear a boonie. A neck sunburn is not pleasant.
They're all over the place. Any surplus site, Amazon...TBH the foreign versions are more prolific. There's a company called British Wool if you're looking for new items and don't mind paying for good products.
I love the look, metal gardening wire so you can bend and adjust it while you’re wearing it, and so it doesn’t blow up in the wind or while running. Also please for the love of god wear the string as a chinstrap, a strong gust of wind could blow it off. I used to wear an unmodified boonie for cross country running, after a bit I realized it would be much better modified
Wow, actually goes on about looking like Captain Price and then talks about looking like a noob in the field... You've definitely played way too much CoD mate, calm down 😂 And stop making your hat become more of an issue than any help, you're blinding yourself like a racehorse doing this... What's next? Bright pink camo for your rifle so you can look more like a pro in the field? 😂
Captain prices boonie is based on real British troops in combat zones, but because there is no name for these hat mods, the captain price reference lets you know etc what he’s talking about.
@fatdan172501 thanks for that clarification, I had no idea captain prices hat was based on a real hat in actual real life.. you realise how unrealistic CoD is though right? So many things about this game that they get wrong, and this is before we even start talking about hats...
Only in Seppostan would you be shaping your giggle hat😂 Your cutting out your peripheral vision AND plays havoc with your spatial awareness/hearing any noises that ain't directly below you
Ya all these old timers and haters don’t realize this style has been seen in actual combat zones, mostly by British troops, I guess looking sharp and cool is not a thing anymore.
A tutorial for a jungle hat...interesting! Are there any regulations on how the hat has to be shaped? The only thing we have to look out for in a jungle hat in the German army is a good field of vision...and that it fits in the cargo pocket...
I've been on six deployments and I never thought I would need a tutorial on how to wear a boonie hat! If you're biggest concern or worry is how you look wearing it than it's practical use, then you have one hell of an ego!
We used to have the sleeves rolled up, but then some time in the 1990's some one in the pentagon had the bright idea that we had to keep the sleeves down no matter the weather. They also came up with the idea that the dress greens look better with a black beret which was something that belong to the Rangers!
43 years ago....... All we maintained was a brim, Just wide enough to cast shadow/shade over your face to hide it...... it's surprising how much "shine" pops off a camoed face....Look👀 AND .... It needed to just "droop" down to shed the weather. ie.: rain, off your face No folds, pinching, nothing that blocks any vision... ya' wanna see 👀 the Bad Guys... I still have a boon rolled cowboy style strap knotted over the top sweat band wrapped in about 15' of 550.... That's what my primarys wore. Ancient history.. yeah.. lmao 😁. Practical...Oh Hell No!!😆😆.
Closing the brim in and down on the sides impairs your peripheral vision. In addition it wipes out your overhead vision. You constantly have to reposition your head to see what is on your sides and see what is above you. You are overall limiting the field of view that you have. I have a few Boonies but I have them so I can see clearly ahead, to the sides and above. And I can easily use equipment like binoculars, rifle sights, cameras, etc. And I use goggles and a low hung Boonie gets in the way. I generally have the brim at the front up vertically directly across from side to side. It's away from the face so using goggles isn't a problem. Using a head Bandana is an option.
@@fatdan172501 Yeah, it does. Put your Boonie on like on the video. Look up with your eyes to see what's overhead, without tilting your head up. You cannot see above you.
Take it to a seamstress and ask her to sew a double stitch seam on the edge of the brim when you cut it. You can soak it, and use an iron to form the creases in the brim on a new boonies.
So, you’re worried about looking like a noob, but you’d rather play the tacticool game and look like a fictional character Cpt. Price? Use your equipment for what it’s designed for and who gives a shit if you “look tacticool” or not. 11 years 11B
So you like it to look 'Sharp' which in the Bush would never happen. FYI We British Army, tend to cut the brim around by half so we could see better proiferal vision
Don’t cut the drawstring. I tried what he saying and if you’re in a vehicle and there’s wind whipping around it will fling your hat off put the fucking strap underneath chin it’s about being functional
Between dive training and pool pt, going to the field and ITX they’re even worse now. But yes they’re used not a one time and take it off. I do wash them but not often
Wanna look like a douche bag? Comment on a video relevant to your search history because if you found this stupid then the other videos you looked up were stupid
@@Boobienoobie147 Unfortunately, it seems that these videos get mixed in with actual military relevant videos. Might be that RU-vid just isn't very good at discerning between videogamers and actual soldiers.
A lot of angry fudds in the comments. As a civilian training with my buddies I want to look cool *shrugs*. If you have ANY peripheral vision and you can see ahead without leaning your head back - the brim isn't low enough!
Don't wear a boonie...they make a great target creating a deep shadow and very obvious sharp brim-line. Wear a banadana if going soft-hat. Kevlar is actually cooler than boonie as it allows air to circulate whereas the boonie has a tight seal around the head unless modified in some way.
@@infantryski11b64 Considering how sophisticated even infantry work is today you'd think the army would have weeded out all the ignorant knuckledraggers...obviously not judging by your ignorant knuckledragging reply.
@Boobienoobie147 oh okay, well I understand that if you're in the military.. but so many that aren't in the military be wearing shit like this to the grocery store and it just looks fucking silly.. Like cosplaying soldier or something
@@RonnieEverette and honest to God when someone thinks them for their service, some of them have the common decency to say that they’re not but they enjoy the attention of it. That’s also why I hate airsoft cosplayers with a passion. They think everything is so cool just to put a kit on when they’re garbage at the actual thing
@Boobienoobie147 I've seen it several times myself.. Just recently I saw a guy in Lowes trying to get a military discount, when he was asked to present his ID he said he lost it but his camo should be proof enough 😂
Didn't know that we were all actually going to a fashion show when we we're in the field..pretty sure our enemies aren't stopping to look at our get up b4 they shoot at us..he probably uses a mirror to apply his face paint
