Kevin O'Connor arrives at the house and takes a walk through the new addition. Upstairs he finds the apprentices, Bailey, Austin and Nathan learning how to frame an interior wall in the master bedroom suite with Norm Abram. They measure for the top and bottom plates. Then they cut and nail in the studs to the plates. Finally, they stand up the wall and tack it in place.

Great book for a beginner . ru-vid.comUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ this book really starts from the beginning, as in it explains what basic tools are and how to use them. But when it gets to the art of creating joints and how and when to use them this book really starts to teach you something. At least that was my experience.

Kinda sad seeing Austin Wilson in this segment. He died way too young, way before he could ever put skills he was learning into a career. ☹ Edit: In case you didn't know, he was in Orlando for This Old House at the International Builder's Show when he passed away in his sleep from a pre-existing medical condition. It is so sad to see this episode again now knowing that Austin passed away. He was such a promising prospect as a tradesman and a welcomed addition to the show. Adding the apprentice dynamic to the show added new life to the format. Continued success to Bailey and Nathan, who has now joined the show full-time, on their construction trade journeys.

Thank you This Old House. I like the smooth approach used here. But if someone is adding a wall to an old house, beware! Old houses rarely have the uniform height between floor and ceiling as this new construction has. In my experience, each stud will need to be a few fractions of an inch longer or shorter than the stud next to it. Anyone working on an old house may be better off attaching the top and bottom sill to the ceiling and floor, then measure and fill in the framing in between.
@MemoGrafix

Measure every single stud in between? Sounds very time consuming. Shim top or bottom sill accordingly to make square level and uniform. Then cut all studs in between the same size using the jig method shown here. Save lots of time especially if putting up more than one wall

a better way to check wood straightness is to keep it on the pile of lumber and turn over one side at a time. this way you check trueness against the stack which is fairly straight. much easier to see the bow or hump against a straight board while lying on the board. nice tip with the template norm. thanks.

Bob Hoffman - home centers are all about buying lumber low and selling high. Naturally the suppliers who want to sell to them send their lesser quality stuff. The “real” lumber yards where I live sell high quality straight lumber at a lower price. The only advantage of a home center is one stop shopping which you definitely pay more for.

Yeah ,in UK most studs partition walls are 3x2 and that is tough if u make the studs to exact dimensions to lift up as you go 4x2 ,6x2 the diagonal as you lift gets bigger so you won't be able to just bang it in ,just wondering how much experience ppl cut short without making it too short
@GGg-ug3jr
@GGg-ug3jr 4 года назад
@@georgelfc1 what you could do is take whatever dimensional size lumber you're using as a stud and caught it to the overall exact height of what the finished wall will be and then lay it down and practice lifting it as though it is the wall and you will see if it will fit or not. Then trim a little off if you need to until you get the right height and then you will know your total height you will need. Or you can cut it plenty short and lifted into place and use shims between the bottom of the ceiling joist or strapping and the top plate of the wall.
