I would like to compliment you on this extremely informative and easy to follow video! You have enlightened me no end! I followed your instructions step by step. I had already recuperated storage by doing my own thing but this video REALLY enabled me to clear up even more space! Awesome stuff. Even for a silver surfer this was soooo easy to follow! I shall be passing this video onto others. Thanks so very much.
My personal suggestion for "duplicates", which are most often multiple shots of the same thing, is to go through them IMMEDIATELY and delete all bar those you actually want to keep! It's a minor pain - caused by the luxury of being able to take so many "free" shots whenever you want - but it's WAY EASIER then going through several thousand later on down the road.... Especially when other people might have disagreed with your selection of what counts as "the best One"!!
Wife and I copy photos, "share", to a Drive "work on this" folder. Then we delete from phone. Then we d/l to desktop computer to decide what we want to keep. Then we clean out Drive folder.
I always learn something new with your videos. The other thing you want to delete in GMAIL is Spam which also counts towards your storage. And, as I understand it, ALL MAIL doesn't just include your archived mail but it includes your inbox and everything else. It is a way to access your archived items but it includes everything.
Ya you have to be very careful with this, as I just tested it and if you delete from Inbox it is gone in All Mail, and if you delete in All Mail it is gone in Inbox (and both test emails ended up in the Trash); All Mail doesn't really seem to be a back-up of everything (or Archive as he calls it), they are live interlinked.
I use free extra storage from another Gmail account. I have a 'main' Gmail account and several 'secondary" Gmail accounts I mainly use for shopping or other activities like Facebook etc. I dont want them bothering me with e-mails on my main Gmail account. In each of those secondary accounts I have created a shared folder with full rights given to my main account. These folders will show up in my main account as shared folders. That's 15G extra storage from each account! While this may not be convenient for email storage or photos uploaded from your phone, it works very well for uploaded files from your computer like pdf's, spreadsheets and presentations etc.
Would like to see a video on how exactly you do this. Why is the extra 15BG of storage no good for photos? Can you not use your secondary email accounts like your primary account and have the 15GB cover all 3 google services ie Gmail, Drive and Photos? Would love hear back from you.
I am in exactly the position you mentioned regarding lack of storage. This was very helpful as I shall do "selective backups" to an external HDD. You talk about "backing up" and "downloading" which is slightly confusing. I want to download a COPY (backup) of photos, emails, etc. to an external HDD but obviously, I want my ORIGINAL data to remain on the Google Server ; otherwise this would be "exporting" data...?
Thank you I've done probably 8090% of what you talked about but Google's making it tough for me to move my stuff to an SD card and we didn't talk about that. I'm 15 and 15 right now as far as storage so in my memory's way down also but I've got a huge SD card with all kinds of room and they're making it difficult for me to switch it over thank you. I also agree with what you sort of mentioned about a conspiracy theory and sometimes I feel like I'm being strong armed by Google thugs. 😒😎
Love your videos! Just found you yesterday and am loving your personality, humor, and great content! Heart is with you re losing your fur baby. I totally get the terrible loss 🥰 looking forward to your future vids! 🙏🏻
Excellent, very helpful video! I took the bait and bought their cheapest paid plan for storage but it doesn't always have to stay that way. It works out to $19 a year for 100 GB of storage.
Google One is the company brand for AdWords platforms. It is a global search engine optimisation tool created by Google. It helps advertisers target their ads and to improve performance with bots for automated ad-serving. It has something integral that makes it hard to uninstall from your life forever. Google also offers Ads Manager which is quite useful when you work with multiple ad accounts on different platforms, databases and usage types (ie artificial intelligence? ), data silos and synonyms rules, etc . Thanks for your video, dottotech
Because making zillions and zillions of dollars isn't enough for them. Lol notice how they hit us right in the photos first. They know how people cherish their 🤳 selfies.
If only google would make it easyer to select many photos at once like a list view of files ! Its a pain to selecf them all when you have thousands of them.
As usual, outstanding information, clearly laid out. I had to play with Takeout last year and did not find it enjoyable. Could not find good instruction like this and then my computer crashed in the middle of the process of storing 12GB onto a portable hard drive. Good thing we were in lock down in that case, gave me time to deal. I sure needed it...
Me: “I should check my Google Drive storage.” Google Drive: “Unlimited.” Gotta love Google Business… or G-Suite… or whatever the new name Google calls it as of today.
Steve, I noticed that I have tons of duplicates NOT created by me!!! Somehow Google did it to me and I'm not kidding... these are IDENTICAL photos!!! Any suggestion or have you heard this before?
Thanks, Steve. I spent nothing for 100 GB of storage. Nothing because Google has a survey app that "pays" you for answering questions. I had over $26 in credit, so the $20 came out of that. As you yourself pointed out, it is a time trade off. Pay a small amount or pay with my precious time. A no brainer for me. But you didn't mention what also comes with paying for Google One. You get phone/chat/email support on all Google products. This alone is worth it. I had a couple nagging issues and was able to get an answer. Second, you get a few additional editing functions in Google Photos.
Thank you. I really needed to know that downloading my data is easier than I thought and not worth continuing to procrastinate saving onto an external hard drive.
This off your current topic, ie. storage but, I have looked and have yet to find "how to navigate a route in Google Maps that I saved offline on my iPhone. Everyone show the saving of maps but no one that I have found yet goes on to show how to use that map and or to navigate a route that I may have saved in anticipation of not having cellular service.
Google Photos does remove duplicate photos, exact duplicate photos. This was good for me since I used to backup to multiple locations so consolidating them was space taxing, due to the multiple copies of the same photo. So when in doubt I just keep uploading the photos to Google Drive. If it's already in my library then it just won't accept the upload. My take on why they don't filter out photos that are very similar: it's for training their face recognition AIs. For my account the face recognition has issues differentiating the faces of my toddler from those of my friends.
the best thing is buy a big hard drive and save your photos and you need to keep buying hard drives of one fails you will all ways have your photos but online your photos a friend of mine said he saw his family photos and other familys if you type in family photos in your area they show up and even if your not login or now not a good idea online
I've noticed that when you're on Google Photos and you try to delete more then 500 photos at once, web app in browser just does nothing at that point. And on a phone, sometimes it does delete them, sometime it doesn't. Weird stuff.
Stop shitting all over Google. It's a FREE service You are talking about! If someone doesn't like it, they can stop using it. You can always setup Your own server and store Your data there. See if it's of the same performance, reliabilty, accessibilty, functionality, availabilty,... and oh , the PRICE. Like all enterprises it's aim is to make profit. It is NOt a charity establishment. They are not forcing anyone to use it. Finally, I liked Your video (thumbs up). But really, You are doing a great injustice to Google. The service is free (well almost - they do collect Your data and they do advertise. But I still think it is a fair trade - otherwise i wouldn't have been using it).
Please correct me if I am wrong, but I copied this from my reply to an old comment below, as it is a bit different than Dotto describes in the video? You have to be very careful with this (All Mail), as I just tested it and if you delete from Inbox it is gone in All Mail, and if you delete in All Mail it is gone in Inbox (and both test emails ended up in the Trash); All Mail doesn't really seem to be a back-up of everything (or Archive as he calls it), they are live interlinked. Anyway, just be careful...
There is no easy way to do it. Sit down.. delete photos. Emails and stuff from your hard drive. Yeah. I wasn't really using those emails from 2008. Use secondary accounts for storage. Backup to a hard drive. Or pay Google .. and add it to the other charges we pay monthly but can manage without if we planned and tried a little.
Brilliant dude, can you suggest a local drive (maybe a few terabytes) to use. I have an old one 1 terabyte usb conn, but should prob get bigger. I do have a yt channel hence lots of vid clips & finished videos. Second question is how to download/backup my channel? Thx. :)
I dont lack storage, but Im getting a message by Google One on my android phone persistently, that i back up GOOGLE ONE. I habe a Motorola phone and Alcotel tablet, So, doesnt my phone already do back up ? I dont want to be on the cloud. Im tech challenged as i am a senior.
What I don't understand is why we have to be held to ransom by Google for storage anyway. My phone has a 250 gb drive, which, when you think about it, is massive. Google is forcing us to pay for storage that we already own. It's like having a landlord charging me rent on my own private house. You don't have to use Gmail for emails. You don't have to use Google photos to store photo's. You don't have to use Google drive. Google are acting like a landlord over our own private phone usage. Storage and backups are the responsibility of the phone owner, not "Nanny Google." If all the above is the result of having a "Google Account" then I think it's best to look elsewhere.
Steve. In Google storage you said third party files do not count as storage. I have two Gmail accounts with 15G/6TB space. Why not pull all my files to the 6TB account and share these files with the 15G account without penalty?
Your video is very helpful. Please include some info for download format. when i have downloaded zip for photos it is in .jpg.json format. Some question why we need .jpg.json format, many more. Can you please address this kind of questions. Thank.
okay, i switched from icloud to g one & photos, gf has my fotos now but says it is 22gb, clean up space, i go there & it says delete xxxx recover 11gb of space..then it says this will delete all these fotos & vids from my gf account permanently, wtf? is it just deleting from my phone , it’s very confusing
Thank you for the insights. Im new to google photos hence just did a full backup and sync from my iPhone to google photos. I use to backup all old photos into dropbox using folders into google photos albums. Post migrated to google photos, I see many duplicated photos (some from iPhone camera roll and some from dropbox), is there a systematic way to delete those duplicated photos?
They really did get rid of off sync settings. or made it extremely hard to find. So everything we have on our phones gets clouded and built back up to max storage used again as long as im near wifi for it to upload new pictures. I want to turn off the uploading to the cloud! Mad at Google for this! Ever since college it was known that GMAIL was unlimited as far as storage goes then they combine photos and drive! Sorry im yelling. Its not to you sir. It just made me realize how ridiculous the phone bots as well as having everything AI and auto driven is getting without answers. A set rule or law to abide to under there circumstances and fooled in on a lie and covered up with a Google One combination of storage areas and GMAIL being brought in it.
I did press free space in my email I was my picture from Gallery. I don't know what happened. Could some help me about that to backup my picture please?
If you're getting the storage message in your email, but you instead move photos out of Google photos, will that eliminate the "running out of storage" message?
Excellent video!! Not sure, though, that your "delete All Mail" suggestion was clear that when you click on that, then ALL your email is deleted, regardless of Inbox. HTH, M
Does free up space means google delete the photo/video? Because i just do free up space and now the photos and videos is gone. How can i get the photos and videos back? Plss help me,all my memory is gone now😢
Why are my downloads failing? My husband said the zip files are too large, that gmail won't allow it. Also we have a slow internet connection where we live. Is there anyway around that?
Are HDD immortal? I have lot of stuff in Google Drive and although storage is not an issue because I pay for it, there is lot of data that just doesn't need to be in there. If external HDD can safely and perpetually store the files and folders I can get them out of Google Drive and in the process save up some space for future.
My concern with downloading images from Google Photos down to my HD is that image creation date might change ? I downloaded a few and it seems the process changed the creation date. Any comments or suggestions ? What am I doing wrong ? Thanks all
Can someone explain me, please, If I delete videos and pictures from my phone, will they be deleted on Google One too? I need to free my phone space but store all my pictures in the cloud. can you please explain to me this point. Thank you.
If i plug google phone into my PC and cut and paste photos from my phone onto PC to free up space on phone will these also be removed from Google Photos to free up some space of 15GB allowance? 🤔
Great video. I did Google Takeout; how do I delete the voice calls from my google account? Example there is a folder called voice. I do not want google to have this anymore.
I am in the process of google takeout and downloaded it. The files are in zip if you drag them to the external hard drive it should open a new drive with in the zip and then you can delete the zip file and keep the drive within the external hard drive. I was told that in a youtube video, for some reason the zip file doesn't want to respond. Anyway I recovered about 20 mb of data within my drive will keep working at it manually or in bulk... I will not save my videos, photos only the family and necessary ones as much as possible.
@@dottotech Hi Steve! Please help me make sure I understand this cause it doesn't make sense to me: Deleting photos permanently (trash bin empty and all) does not free up space? So, if I have 2,000 photos that take up 10 GB, and I delete 1,900 of those photos, Google won't free up the space, unless I authorize them to reduce quality for ALL the files?? I've been struggling with these for weeks, Ive deleted thousands of photos, emptied the trash, and apparently the only solution for keeping original photo quality is to pay a subscription??!!! Is it even legal to claim they give you 15GB of storage that only goes up, but never goes down??
Hi Steve thank you very much for this very informative video. Question: when we save our google photos in google photo albums, does creating albums and organizing photos that way takes more space in your google storage as opposed to saving it loose (chronologically)? Thank you.
No it does not. It just adds labels to the photos. It does not duplicate the photos. There might be a minute increase related to the metadata but not worth worrying about.
Thankyou great easy to understand video my photos and Google Drive are what I'm after not just to add more space to Google storage .but to delete files from my phone. Hopefully it will all work as intended. I definitely won't delete anything till I verify the photos and files are accessible.
Why don't you have DATES anymore? The date the video was created? That is always a nice reference to to understand the rest of your points about other apps you are referring to. Google changes so fast that if your video is a year old, it maybe outdated. I KNOW all these changes are done by Google, because I am sure it benefits them and SCREW the rest of us.... But you could at least MENTION THE DATE by voice (i.e. today is Jun 2022 for reference...). See? It can be done.
You know I am a CERTIFIED "GOOGLE DOCS" user. I absolutely LOVE the system even though I only use a fraction of what Google offers. BUT... it's not easy to UNDERSTAND how the whole thing works. I know the basics, but sometimes - as it happens now, running out space - I need to KNOW MORE. HOW ABOUT a Webinar on "understanding how Google Drive works" just that. Simple right? Ja Ja. Like you, what really kills my drive space is google PHOTOS & VIDEOS. The rest is insignificant really. But that is where it become difficult to do.... HOW TO ACTUALLY HANDLE the download of your photos????.... should I download ALL or just certain amount? The other issue is, SURE IS NICE to have ALL the pics available on your phone... so the question here is WHICH pics do you keep on Google Drive to have them available OR, NOT having them available but having to go to you STORE DRIVE (External, probably). and find the pics you need... ETC ETC ETC... It does not get EASIER. Ja Ja.
