If you need to clear off space from your Mac's hard drive, there are some places you should look first. You may have some old iPhone backups, installers, or other downloaded files. You can easily see which apps and files take up the most space and get rid of things you no longer need. Applications store support files and caches in your Library folder, but they may not have been cleaned up when you uninstalled the app.

Still can't identify all the ,,other" files? 🤔 I have just released another video, where we talk more about what other really means and dive more deeper into different kinds of file types to reduce free up storage even more. You can watch it HERE: ↩︎ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O1ApRNJ83ik.html

I just cleared up over 50 gb of space without needing to reformat. I deleted lots of application support files and some cache files. I will say it's a bit nerve racking guessing which ones to delete... but I was in a time crunch and needed the space ASAP so if the file didn't look familiar or necessary, I deleted it and everything is still running smoothly! THANK YOU FOR THIS.

Hey buddy, I have 60 GB of Caches on my system, belonging to "Adobe", I don't know what to do with it... What do you recommend?
@OneByteAcademyOfficial
@OneByteAcademyOfficial Год назад
Hello, welcome to the channel 💻 Caches are temporary files which help you with loading things and storing some settings but you can’t break anything if you delete it. I would recommend you to copy the whole folder somewhere on the desktop (just temporarily) and delete the original files from system and see if everything works fine 👍 if yes you can remove the folder from the desktop as well. If there is any issue you still have a backup. I also test files for deleting this way 👨🏼‍💻

I agree. This problem with categorising files is on a Mac for years! The only thing they did recently is that these files are not called ,,others” anymore, but it all falls under system storage. So it’s not unusual to see 100-200GB of storage being taken by ,,system” 🤷‍♂️

Urgent. Can you help us please? My daughter is trying to work on a final project in Final Cut Pro on her MacBook Pro version 12.2 and she is getting the message disk is full even though she has deleted a lot. Her project is due in 8 hours. Please help.
@OneByteAcademyOfficial
@OneByteAcademyOfficial 2 года назад
In general once you delete many files make sure the bin is emptied as well and restart the mac. I would also suggest to take some big files (for example movies) and move it temporarily to external drive or iCloud Drive. But the problem might be the Final Cut project itself. Usually the project takes a lot of space. I work a lot in final cut and simple 2 minute video might be taking 40GB+. What helps a lot is to create a new event in final cut a copy everything from the project there and delete the old event. Make sure you create whole new event, not just a project. Because your need to delete the old event in order to clean all the files from there. Everything should works well but the files will not be pre-rendered which makes the project much smaller and you can continue working on it. It will not affect the video quality.

in the Application Support folder I found a folder "BackupTrans" which is 100GB!! Can I delete this or does my Mac depend on it? I think i remember the name - it was I think an app to backup my iphone's data/files but can't remember. I'm scared that deleting it may cause NEEDED files to disappear from my mac (eg photos/videos from Photos app etc)
@OneByteAcademyOfficial
@OneByteAcademyOfficial 2 года назад
Your Mac surety doesn’t depend on it, backup are just old files you can recover in case of any problem. It will not delete any of your current files. Good thing is to check the date of the folder 📁 it might be very old backup of your phone. It was very typical in the past to backup the whole iPhone to the Mac and take a lot of storage. Anyway if you are really scared to delete something the best way is to temporarily move the folder somewhere else, maybe to the desktop, keep it there for few days to see if everything works and delete it after. 👍💻

@OneByteAcademyOfficial
@OneByteAcademyOfficial 2 года назад
I don’t have personal experience with that, so I’m not sure. What you can try is to copy some of the files somewhere else (maybe temporarily on the desktop) and see what happens when you delete it from the original folder. This way you can test it and if there is any issue with the games you can add the folders back. But I’m afraid it will really be connected to the actual games, mac just doesn’t know how to categorise these files and put it in other instead of apps. Try it and you will see and let me know how it ended up, I’m interested in this topic. 👨🏼‍💻

It’s very new Mac so it should not be so full. Try to follow tips from this video or the other one which is linked in the comments here. I believe it will help you discover the files. My tip is that you have old MacOS installer there, probably some backups. And if you have other devices connected with your Mac over iCloud it could be taking the space as well. I have for example 100GB of photos on my iPhone, if I synchronise it with the Mac it will take 100gb from the storage there as well. I would recommend you to follow these 2 videos and also check these options I just mentioned. I believe you will find what’s taking out the space there 👍💻 Let me know after if you managed.

Maybe there's another way to change that horrendous desktop picture??... I have a Mac from 2018 and completely delete it at least once a year. I am not sure why is it showing so much of ,,other" storage on your Mac. It's either a mistake of the graph or there is really something stuck in the system and the whole disk should be formatted and reinstalled. I am planning to do that in approximately a month so I will definitely make a video about it if you are not sure about formatting the whole disk. And if I figure out what else can be in other category in the meantime I will let you know.

Its not a problem with icloud. Its a huge flaw with “icloud backup” What it does is download files onto your mac that are on the icloud. It fills up your mac until ifs close to full. Its keeps the extra on icloud. The problem is it doesn’t let you control what files are on your mac, it decides what the “good” amount of free space is to be left on your mac. Which is a very small amount. Trust me; the “ICloud Drive” drive feature is a disaster. Its not the same as using icloud for mail, contacts and notes. Its the “iCloud Drive” setting in your system preferences. DO NOT use that.
@OneByteAcademyOfficial
@OneByteAcademyOfficial 2 года назад
@@pbm863 yes I understand your concern. It is kind of optimised and it usuals removes the iCloud files from the Mac which are not recently used, but you don’t really have control about it. I don’t use iCloud Drive as a backup at all, just as a storage of files I don’t currently need. I can store for example movies there. They will be away from my mac storage but still available anytime I need them. I explain more about iCloud in this video if you are interested: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EotnuQ6jeHY.html

I already completely understand how icloud works. My point is that the “iCloud Drive” not simple icloud for sharing and storing files , is a disaster. It fills your mac up with more files than you start with. I have about 4 times more data on icloud than I have space on my mac. So , in the scenario where you have large files on icloud , it downloads then to your mac even if you never wanted them on your computer. Also… it puts older files in the cloud and when you go open them it takes FOREVER to load if it’s certain types of files. This is all to point out that in your video you casually suggest using the icloud storage option. I’m afraid many will confuse that with “iCloud Drive” which will take over your computer and you’ll end up with less free space than when you started. Trust me it’s a disaster. Research it, you’ll find than any experienced user with years of data and many Mac’s and lots of files in the cloud CAN NOT use it.
@OneByteAcademyOfficial
@OneByteAcademyOfficial 2 года назад
@@pbm863 I never suggest to backup files on iCloud Drive. I suggest moving files you don’t need right now, to iCloud to save your space. I don’t need to research anything, because I know perfectly well how it works and I don’t have any problem with my storage and with iCloud Drive neither. Maybe you need to pay more attention to details and think more about the way how you use these online storages before criticising it 🤷‍♂️👍
