How To Frontside Air || The Only Trick You'll Need For Pool Parties

In my opinion the hardest part of doing a frontside air skateboarding, or at least the piece that took me the longest to figure out is that once you grab the board you have to look where you want to land. When you turn your head your body more naturally follows in the path that it's going.
staying "small" in the air by pulling the board into your body will also help!
Use this video as a resource as well as watching other videos, I'm sure there will be more bits of advice that may also work for you!

Most important thing to keep in mind for those watching a billion tutorials: the reason why frontside air videos are so simple is because the trick itself is very simple, just kinda scary to try
@JDawwgy
@JDawwgy 3 года назад
exactly this! And the thing that helped me the most to attempt to land my first couple was turning my head in the air and looking where I wanted to land. Its still a little nerve racking going for airs but once you have the feel for landing them they become much easier to do! Good luck!

I really liked this. The best thing you did was show how to grab and bail out first. The only thing is not everyone can run out a transition like that. Wearing knee pads and learning to knee slide would be easy on the knees. I’m assuming you are going for a bonk on the coping too, rather than an Ollie. I like the look over the shoulder tip also. You got balls dude. Nice front side air. Please add more tips to this trick and other tricks too. Backside air maybe also.

Hey! I'm glad you liked the video, it was the first time I've made any tutorial videos so I said in the video to use other videos as resources as well! I have knee pads that i used to try and learn this trick but for me they just encouraged me to bail out every time. I wish I could do backside airs so I could make that video for you too haha, If you learn them make a video for me please so I can learn them too :)

Be careful about running out too many times. You'll trick your mind into thinking that's how the trick is done every time and it will be much harder to force your body to stay on the board.

I love that you commit. No pads is super rad but the kids should wear some pads and also the old guys. I have battled with the frontside air for 30 years and some days they work and are super natural. The days they don't work is because often you look at how rad the bone is and forget to look at the landing. Stay on top of the board and if you have the speed the entry is easy. loved your perspective

I'm 62 and learning to skate my own concrete ramps here So. Mexico. I'm riding a Carver so it's kinda a different game, I'm after surf inspired tricks, one i do is come at the ramp at a angle and do a 300 degree kick turn at the top and ride out , don't think a lot of skaters will be interested in that, but it sure feels good specially if you can keep the same speed. And translates to the water. Btw grabbing the board and running out is a great trip on your part! Tanks huh

@JDawwgy
@JDawwgy 2 года назад
The ramp that your most comfortable riding on is my best recommendation! just note that if the ramp is launching you onto the flat top then you'll have to ollie a bit at the coping. For less of an ollie the ramp will have to help you get your height (the ramp this video was filmed on is 8ft) and keep your body inside the ramp instead of flying onto the deck! Good luck, and I just uploaded a slow motion tutorialish video to my channel that I recommend watching as well!

Yo! Awesome tutorial man.. getting more into bowl/transition skating as I'm 31 now and kinda quit skating a few yrs ago. Anyways I was wondering about your setup. What size board and wheels you'd recommend. Im currently on a welcome 8.5 with 54mm 78a OJ keyframes which are a bit softer and grip way more than regular wheels I've noticed. Im still not sure if I like em lol.. but I was contemplating getting a whole new setup like a 9 with 159s and maybe bigger wheels?
@JDawwgy
@JDawwgy 3 года назад
8.5 was my size of choice when buying popsicle boards, my current boards are welcome and they have interesting shapes sitting usually 9 or 10 inches. I like the bigger ones in the bowl because they can be much more forgiving! I also agree with the soft wheels, they make it much easier to gain and keep your speed. As soon as winter is over I'll be out there making more videos!
@beemelonhead1
@beemelonhead1 3 года назад
@@JDawwgy right on thanks for the reply yo! I was skeptical about the softer wheels because I can tell a significant difference in them not letting me slide as much but yes you're right I notice a lot more speed. If you feel like you need practice landing back in the bowl early grabs are a great way to learn that skill! Gotchu dawg! Remember each time the game updates it will likely break the mods that are installed. While this can be very inconvenient for us its important to remember that Mod Assistant was created by a group of devs (not associated with the beat saber devs to my knowledge) and they continually work on it and keep it as up to date as they can. The patch to mod assistant to allow "saber factory" or anything else by a similar name to modify sabers has not yet been patched back into the mod assistant application. Find their server on discord via googling "beat saber modding group". Or continue to check and see the new or updated mods in the app!

Could you explain the bonk? And when to grab? And do u pump going up the last wall?
@JDawwgy
@JDawwgy 3 года назад
when you ride up just lift your front wheels above the coping and ride in manual sort of until the back wheels hit the coping. At this point you should already have your arm outstretched to where the board will be (straightish out in front of you). once the back wheels reach the coping they will hit it and it acts as the pop of your ollie so you don't always need to snap your tail on the way out. once your wheels hit the coping you should be above the coping, this is when you will guide the board and your outstretched arm together. after that pull the board into your body and turn your head to look for the landing.

@JDawwgy
@JDawwgy 3 года назад
Hey Grant! What really helped me with the bonk is when your going up the ramp and your front wheels have cleared the coping already, your back hand should already be outstretched waiting for the board to come up. The bonk is only really a bonk because of the noise it makes when your back wheels hit, so make sure your not smashing your back wheels into the coping when your trying. Just think to have your hand where the board is going to go, watch the board go into your hand and then don't forget to turn your head when your ready to try landing it! Hope this helps, if you need any more advice or if what I just said didn't make sense let me know :)

To do a backflip you have to pull your weight back in a pretty specific way, As long as you aren't throwing your head back at the lip of the coping you should be fine!

It's not as easy as it looks! It will take tons of getting used too. The thing that will be the hardest is trying to land on the board for the first time, once you commit to landing it and slide out at the bottom a few times you'll know your on the right track! @JDawwgy
@JDawwgy 3 года назад
I ride on a welcome board, I usually go for 8.5'' and up, I believe this one was a 9.5'' and my trucks are some chunky indies, the wheels are soft almost like cruiser wheels and not quite as big as longboard wheels! I personally don't have preference over grip tape and I usually just get bones reds bearings! the best board though is the board you've got and what your comfortable with! I like the wider boards because in my mind there's more board to land on if I make little mistakes!
@leredditcommander8208

How advanced should i be to do this? Im not a newbie but any air already looks advanced to me. It is ok to practice first at a lower level? The bowl here is huge.
@JDawwgy
@JDawwgy 3 года назад
Practice anywhere you like! I will say that if the transition isn't steep enough though you may find it hard to keep your body in the bowl for the landing as the transition will want to spit you out onto the top deck if it doesn't get close enough to vertical at the top! Air tricks are much more difficult to learn compared to grinds in the bowl, but once you commit to landing a few times you'll really start to get the feel for it! Good luck!
@manmadeartists
@manmadeartists 3 года назад
Assuming that you might have feared the height and thoughts of "what might happen when" you overcame your fear of committing by taking it over the coping and bailing out first and then trying to hold your grab longer? Or is there more story to it? The fear of taking it over the coping is blocking me so much i even have difficulties on early grabs which i think are nice to try first (just my thoughts :D)
@JDawwgy
@JDawwgy 3 года назад
Everyone gets that "what might happen when" feeling don't worry! The best way to overcome that in the bowl is to run up it on foot, run up the wall and just jump at the top to get your head above the coping and then turn and run back down to the bottom. This should get you comfortable with where the bowl is going to put you in the air. When your comfortable with it try on your skateboard, start by riding up and when your as high as you can get grab the board from under your feet and run down (important to either be holding the board or to throw it somewhere so you don't land on it on the way down). Honestly this trick isn't one that I just learned in a day (there was a day when I finally tried to land on the board again though), but a trick that I tried once or twice each time I went to the skatepark for a summer. After getting more comfortable in the air the day that I kept the board tucked under my feet and looked where I was going to land was the day I rode away from my first one. If you have a helmet, kneepads, and elbow pads it can also greatly increase your confidence when trying to land on the wheels for your first air! Good luck dawg, let me know if this advice helped you at all :)

@JDawwgy
@JDawwgy 3 года назад
If you feel more comfortable trying for your first time on a smaller ramp then give it a few tries! The bigger your comfortable going (more specifically the steeper your comfortable going) the easier it will be to land back in the bowl instead of on the top deck! Good luck landing your first one!! PS. This is the ramp that I learned frontside airs on and the section that I drop into (6ft deep) is much harder to do this trick on compared to the deeper (8ft deep) section that I show in the video. If you notice there's another even deeper section (10ft deep) of the bowl that I didn't do the trick in; your absolutely right ;p just going as big as your comfortable is always the best bet when learning new tricks!

I didn't! Ollie is scarier in my opinion because you don't have the same amount of control over your board. When you do the grab you can always pull it out and run down the landing but for an ollie its a bit trickier to ditch the board.

once you get the grab, if you can pull the board in tighter to your body (even like 15cm closer) you will have a much better feel for where you are in relation to the wall! One you can feel the pull in tight it allows you to extend your legs to the wall, much reducing the chances of hanging up. From experience you will fall out at the bottom MANY more times that your trucks get hung at the top! Good luck landing your first one!!
