Is self study effective? I’m willing to put 2k or 4k into the Princeton review but some ppl online who have scored 1500 told me Princeton review isn’t worth it and self studying with khan academy is better.
I think self study is effective if you put the time and full effort into actually studying- one of my super big tips whenever telling someone how to prepare for the SAT is to simulate testing conditions every single time you want to take a practice version so that it’ll help prepare you for the real version!!
hi!! I’m currently 14 and going to high school in a month , SAT is not my country’s official exam so I am gonna have to do all the revisions and everything by myself, my family is not so supportive about the idea of me taking the SAT and studying in the colleges in the US but I’m still gonna do so bc it’s my life and I only have one chance. What do you recommend first start doing for my revision? I’m currently 0 progress but I plan to start in a week, also , if I took the SAT at 15/16, can I use the result to apply for college when I finish high school? Will the Sat result still be valid ? Omg kudos to you for working so hard! I'm pretty sure you can use your scores if you took it at 15/16, but I would confirm with the colleges you plan on applying just to make sure. I would start with taking a diagnostic test through the official SAT study guide, and seeing your oriignal score without studying, and revising from there. Feel free to ask with more questions. I'm not sure that you'd be able to get it up within a month, but if you worked consistently for a semester or so, I'm sure you'd be able to! Lmk if you have any other questions

@@oops4678 Well I’m a little less qualified to answer the top tier question because I go to a VERY small school. There’s only about ~35 people in my grade. I do have the highest SAT score in my class right now, and the closest person behind me is at a 1390 on her third exam. (The 1460 was also my third exam.) I’m expecting to be salutatorian of my class; I’d say valedictorian but there’s another student who absorbs information like a sponge and outdoes me in everything but standardized testing, and I have no doubt she’s gonna be at the top. Before I note study strategies, I do want to say a few things: I got a 1300 on my first SAT, a 1410 on my second, and a 1460 on my final one. *The majority of my points just came from improving my math score.* I’ve always been good with English (I write a ton in my free time and want to publish a book someday) and in that 1300 SAT, I had a 720 in English. For the 1460, my distribution was 750 English, 710 Math. Nevertheless, it is possible - and from what I’ve seen, more usual - for people to skew the other way and still get good scores. My friend with the 1390 scored a solid 740 in Math and only got five math questions wrong on the whole exam. Another question: Do you know if you’re going to be taking the current SAT, or the new online version that they’re creating? I’ve heard that the SAT is going to be completely revamped by 2024. Have you already finished freshman year, or are you going into freshman year? If it’s the latter, you’re almost definitely taking that new version, and in that case, most or all of this advice won’t apply. (For info on the new version, just look up “SAT changes in 2024” and you should get a ton of results and info, along with videos people have made about what we know so far.) Finally, tips for the current SAT! This first one is a bit random, but I’d advise you - if you need a push to start studying on your own - to *think about taking both an SAT prep course AND your first exam in sophomore year.* I was the only one in my class who took the prep course my school offered in sophomore year instead of junior year, and I find that it helped me a lot - the class itself wasn’t very good for me, but it _familiarized me with the format of the exam_ and _gave me an idea of how to study._ Then, since I took my first exam right after that, I had an even better idea of what I needed to work on. And then I had a whole year afterwards to do aforementioned work. *Get the Collegeboard SAT book (it’s blue, you should find it online in a pinch) along with the SAT Black Book (which is actually the title of that one).* The first book was made by collegeboard and it has eight official practice tests for you to take. _Practice tests are HUGE in studying for this exam._ The second book was made by people who analyzed the SAT and discovered some tricks and loopholes Collegeboard doesn’t like to talk about, and then they published them in a book. That book also has step by step analyses of a few of the official practice exams from Collegeboard, so after you take a practice exam in the blue book, you can review it in the Black Book. I found that *studying without time constraints on practice tests* helped me a lot - even for sections where my biggest problem was time management. There are set blocks of time for each part of the SAT, and sometimes _time can be the biggest reason why someone loses so many points on the exam._ That being said, _it’s smart to separate time management from studying_ because if you take a test with no time constraint, you won’t rush yourself, and then any incorrect answers most likely mean you’re unfamiliar with the material. If time management is the problem, then without it, you should be scoring near-perfectly on every practice exam. But usually, that’s not the case, and you’ll realize that there’s always a few questions you have no idea how to solve or could’ve solved much faster than you did. Get ahold of all of the material first, and then focus on timing it all later. (But really, don’t FORGET to fix time management later, because it’ll really bite you in the behind if you ignore it forever - ask me how I know.) Sounds counterintuitive, but *study what you’re good at already.* Your highest score is on the Math with Calculator section? Keep studying the Math with Calculator section. The SAT operates on a curve, which means that the higher of a score you have, the more each question counts. Like I mentioned before: _Five_ math questions were the difference between a 740 and a perfect 800 in Math for my friend. _Seven_ questions were the difference between a 750 and a perfect 800 for me in English. When your score is lower, each question doesn’t count for much, but when you’re proficient in an area, it’s best to brush up on any misunderstandings and eliminate any stupid mistakes you can. They start to cost you. *Keep track of your mistakes.* I kept a notebook where I wrote down every incorrect answer on a practice test, what kind of mistake it was, how I was supposed to ACTUALLY find the answer, and how I can prevent the mistake from happening again. You can do this on a Google Document or on paper, doesn’t matter - I don’t normally write much on paper, but it helped me when writing out the work for the math questions I got wrong. Either way, your mistakes are the most important part of every practice test you take. They will tell you exactly what you need to do to raise your score, and if you can keep record of them, you’ll notice themes of what you struggle with. If you still don’t know how to solve a question after seeing the answer key with a practice test, Google it; there are TONS of RU-vid videos out there analyzing every single question on every single practice test. An unbelievable amount of people have probably made walkthroughs for that exact question you need answered. This might be controversial, but *consider studying only one subject at a time.* Gonna be perfectly honest, I never managed my time well enough for this, so in my scramble in the days before the SAT my schedule looked something like taking a Reading test and then a Math with No Calculator and then two Math with Calculator and then a Writing and Language and then back again. That was fine for me. But I’ve seen a few people recommend setting apart specific days for Reading, or even just separating English and Math days while studying. Find what works best for you. I will say that I never once took all four sections with the exact collegeboard timings and restrictions, and I’m torn on whether or not to regret that. *If you can, consider simulating an SAT exam exactly how it will be the day you take it.* This will give you the best idea of how you’ll perform on test day, because if you’ve studied mostly without timing yourself and you’ve only done one section at a time, your studying sessions aren’t replicating the time constraints and mental exhaustion of test day. Find a day you’re free and take all four sections at once, exactly how it happens on test day, and see how well you do. Learn from your mistakes then rather than on the actual test day. If you’re aiming to score high, like 1400s and higher, *understand how the curve works and be patient with yourself.* 1400s territory is where every single question starts to count, and your progress might seem to plateau. For example, on that second SAT I took, the curve was absolutely brutal (Collegeboard thought it was an easy exam and curved it pretty low) and I scored a 1410 with only 16 questions wrong on the whole exam. There are 154 questions on the SAT. From a grading standpoint, I would’ve “scored” around an A- or a B+, but I was still lightyears away from the 1500+ score I was going for. And that’s because the better you get, the harder it is to get better. Stupid mistakes can cost you nearly a hundred points if you let them. Those people who get 1580s? They probably have anywhere from 1-4 questions wrong ON THE ENTIRE TEST. That’s why those high scores are so prized - they’re barely short of perfection. If you’re gonna aim high, you’re capable of anything you set your mind to, but it might take a lot more time than you bargained for. Nevertheless, it is most certainly possible. You can do it. Those are the biggest tips I have. I’m pretty sure that if I’d devoted more time to studying (instead of taking the week before every SAT to study intensely) I could’ve raised my score by a lot. You’re amazing for asking about the SAT so early. I hope that even if you end up taking the new SAT format, some of these tips might still apply (though I’m honestly unsure whether or not they will). No matter what, I wish you the best. 💞

You are honestly the nicest person I have seen on the internet, literally typing a whole passage to help out a stranger 💓💓😭😭 This will honestly help A LOT and since I am an international student, I will be taking the digital exam but your advice is really really helpful still😭💓 I don’t find the math section hard, but I am not good at the English part, I am reciting and learning new SAT vocabularies daily atm, I was gonna get the blue book but it was sold out 🥲🥲 I target 1400+! So I am gonna have to work really really hard. Also, may I ask if taking the SAT subject test will help with my college application? Like a bonus part?
it depends on how much time you have and what you’re weak on. the purpose of the video is to create a daily plan where you don’t overwork yourself but be consistent
