Great - would be super, if you would your peers let know about it too...

It is most likely still louder. But more important: When a human hears live music, then because of how the human ear (or more how the brain analyzes it) is very detailed and you can follow every direction, so you can hear the instruments better. Listening on LS everything shares basically 2 points. It's way more difficult to follow everything, that's why we need great mixes - or : that's why music has to be mixed at all.

thanks. No I never ever try to set "musical" time, I set the up by ear and how I like them and how I think it helps the mix best:-)

I just made a great recording with Jorge Rossy, using only 3 mics. I will make a video about that production. Sometimes it takes a lot of mics, sometimes it takes less - but the sources need to be miced as good as possible. Mostly the problem is the room. Music is recorded in too small rooms nowadays.

Everything needs, what it needs. If they are already heavily compressed with a similar compressor, then maybe no. If they need punch and glue, then maybe yes. It's sounding worse with the tool added, then it's too much, but before, often the more the better:-)

It's about the right balance. Too much again is then very bad, except if you need a lot of distortion. Basically, a lot of saturation leads to audible distortion. Some tracks need only saturation (less or more heavy), then some need audible saturation and some need distortion.

I love compression - but Bruce Swedien (mixed Michael Jackson) claimed, that he would mix without compression. With only Gain-Riding, at the end, why not? A great mix is a great mix, and many engineers have different methods. As long as your mix has physical integrity all is good:-)

This is covered in my Mixing Bible - (available at www.danieldettwiler.com) it is an interesting question for sure. An EQ boost would be static, and might be great if the instrument plays in the low range, but might not be appropriate anymore if the instrument plays in the high register. In Saturation however, the Harmonic's that you enhance will "move" with the Pitch of the instrument. So the "enrichment" of the instruments is not dependent of the pitch, which sometimes can be important. Also, if you boost with the EQ, it might sound great if the instrument plays soft, but it might not sound good anymore, if the instrument plays loud, as then the upper harmonics usually are louder anyway. Dynamic Equalizing is then also a good point. It's certainly something that I could most likely not cover in those free RU-vid Lessons.

Absolutely: Jazz is a very wide thing, all possible. However, if I refer to traditional jazz, in 99% of all circumstances, the instruments shall sound natural, so I simplify the phrasing, to make it more understandable.

You showed the comparison at 5:37 (jazz mix), your mix sounds certainly great but here’s my questions: 1) The recorded material sounds pretty different. Can you make “other mix” sounds like yours without replacing the material? 2) If so, is the key to make it sound like your mix is compression and saturation that you showed in this video? 3) Do you have mix tutorial of jazz mix like the comparison one you showed in the video? Can I purchase any of your course to learn about it?

@ Hi, great questions: 1) No, I could not make it as good as it is, both the recording and the mixing quality. In my example (mixed by me) I also recorded it, in a large room and with great mics and with love. The other recording was also a cheaper recording in a not ideal room. But I could mix it fairly better for sure (but that is not said to bash colleagues, though - but I just think, without knowing who did the other production, that it clearly must have been a low-budget place.). I get in a lot of Jazz-Recordings to mix and I usually get a very cool sound. But to really go top-notch: Well, if you save money at the recording stage, well, what you mess there can't be compensated by just hire a great mixer (just as a bad mix, can't be compensated at the mastering Stage). 2) It's really to get it great at every stage. My rough sounded already better than the other mix. Proper placement of mics, instruments in a good room, that's the key to start. Then in the mix, yes, it is about getting the dynamic right. Saturation can help, also compression, but not too much. That's the difficulty in Jazz. No compression and saturation lead to small sounding mixes, but if you overdo it, then the mix is worse at the end. 3) I highly recommend my Mixing Bible, available here: www.danieldettwiler.com/course/daniels-mixing-bible There is a lot of conceptual information in there, and it does go way deeper than my free RU-vid Tutorials. It's exactly for people asking the questions you ask. (Interesting questions, as the course is probably perfect for this intermediate level. )

I am a recording engineer myself for over a decade and that was exactly what I thought that it is the most essential to record it right at the source and that gives the impact in the end. However this RU-vid video was a bit confusing and surprising for me at first sight because you showed the comparison as if you are saying dynamic control (compression) and saturation is what differentiates “other mix” and your mix. That’s why I asked if you can “mix” the other mix to sound like yours, which I believed not possible. That said, I am really a fan of your mix and definitely will check out the course. Finally, if something sounds bad, it even is worse, if louder. Once it has a great dynamics, it also provides more energy. But I agree, in such videos, it would be good to mix it, so that all examples would be at a level that makes it easier to compare, but I do those levels during I speak and as the videos are provided for free, I don't have the time for a perfect edit (nor do I want to spend money for someone that mixes all this later). In my paid masterclass, available at www.danieldettwiler.com everything goes much more into details, at a deeper level and there the examples are level matched:-)
