How to Get a Cat to Stop Biting 

I'm watching this with the volume on low, I know my 15lb cat is listening.

Watching this after my car decided to bite me even though he was happily purring from getting pet 10 seconds ago.

My male cat just sits and watches my hands and wait for an opportunity to bite fingers when they move. I tried that soda can with pennies, scruff hold, water bottle, time out in the room. Nothing works 🤦🏾‍♀️ and his nails is sharp as razor blades. I can’t even hold him or pet him without him trying to bite my hand and fingers.

Good ideas! They all make sense. My new cat would bite when he felt overstimulated by too much patting. I didn't want him biting the children or myself. I behaved like a cat that has had enough and I screeched...like a cat. After a few reactions like that to his biting, he stopped altogether. So when he was about to bite, instead, he just took off. He did not want to be alarmed by my cat screech. He never bit again.

I tried everything to get my 8 week old kitty to stop biting my hands and fingers. All of the video's suggestions failed, except for taking him by the scruff of the neck and saying firmly "NO!". I only started doing this, and so far Oscar didn't bite. Then I put him down and walked away. This was really effective. He will soon realise that biting results in a tug on his scruff and a "NO!", whereas purring serenely when on my lap gets him a soothing scratch on his head.

Yeh I tried everything with my cat but he still hides round corners and ambushes me 🤦🏼‍♀️. We just call him our bitey cat 🤷🏼‍♀️. He’s not nasty it’s just his personality. And the neck scruff thing, my cat was orphaned at 3 weeks old so he doesn’t understand the scruff thing at all, sends him into a frenzy then he just sits and shakes for ages after. He’s definitely bonkers (mental health issues for the PC). But we love him and I pity anyone that tried to break into our house 😬 lol

I like how this video actually offers other options than just toy redirecting. I’ve been doing redirecting but she still prefers to bite me most of the time. Other videos just seem to be like toy redirect, toy redirect, toy redirect, and I’m like I’m doing it. It’s not that affective. I’ve been a verity of toys too to make sure she not bored of the one I’m using. She will get a little bit of fun out of a toy. But the minute she remembers I’m there she will come and start stalking me even when I’m not moving. Which I thought was odd since I would have a moving toy which should be more interesting but she rather go towards my other unmoving hand. It’s nice to know someone recognizes the first option isn’t always going to work. Or even the second. As in my case she could careless if the object is moving, like my hand, she will continue to bite it anyways. Thank you. I will look into either moving my hand in or maybe the shaker can. My own sounds doesn’t seem to have too much of an affect on her. I do try to make a noise when she bite just for the sole purpose of imitating a cat that does not like to be bitten. But alas she is a stubborn little kitty.

If my cat bites me, I bite her paw or her ear. It is just that simple. If you want to stop the biting, juts bite back. If your kitty is indoor cat, her paws are clean, just bite back. Not hard, just enough so she/he notices the subtle pain and starts looking at you weirdly. If you bite back too hard, you will have a scar in your face for the next half a year, telling from experience. My cat stopped biting after 2 weeks of me biting back at her. It really works

Hi i have a cat and i need help. You see my cat is not biting for any of these reasons. My cat bites my fingers and it is getting to the point where they bleed. He does it when i pet him and wants me to pet him more. He starts to purr then starts biting my fingers. Is there anyway someone can help.

My cat doesn't play bite, when we're just chilling with his head laying on my hand or arm, he sometimes just turns his head and bites. He's always tried to replicate kisses as much as possible, and he used to do the same thing, but with kitten kisses instead. Pretty sure he thinks I like his "kisses"

thanks ive been doing prying the head away by pulling back of skin on my cat. i never knew about pushing in more and automatic distraction with toy. thank you. very helpful.

We're currently going through this with a 3 monther. We played a little with our hands when he was tiny, but have since stopped. His mother left when he was only a few weeks old so teaching him appropriate social behaviour has been a challenge. He seems to get so ridiculously worked up at times that redirecting doesn't always work. "No!" occasionally works, but the go-to is to merely shake the water bottle and he'll back off. Now, preventing him from ever doing it is the next step. I'm no expert but the suggestions in this videp seem perfectly valid, and most importantly, safe.

Now i know this video is from 5 years ago, but hopefully someone can give me advise. So my cat gives me lovebites, and each day they become more painful, now i know it's not play or out of anger but really just out of love, so redirecting him with a toy will not work also putting my hand further in his mouth not, i scruff him and put him on the ground when he does this but he also does not seem to understand that. So what are some other things i could do to prevent him from giving lovebites (too hard)?

Hope someone can help me with my question!!🙏 I have a ragdoll cat now 11 moths old. Have had cats all my life and of all sorts of ages and breeds but this is new behaviour for me. So, basically he is very keen on biting, and most often when something is new to him. Like when I talk on the phone I tend to walk around in the apartment and he don't understand why so he attacks my feet and caves. If I lay on the floor to do yoga he starts mjaouing and bite me anywhere he can reach. I don't pull away when he does. He likes when people come over but not to meet people in different environments then at home. But if I sit with a friend he'll jump up and nib superfast at the other person's arm over and over. I usually just take him down evertime and sometimes hold his neck like you showed but to no good. He'll just stop when he's bored or to pissed of and just sit and look at us. If he wants attention or is bored he'll come up and bite even if he has been taken care off properly with cuddles and playtime. Other then this he is the absolute best and I live him so freaking much and he's the best cat a person could have so I would really appreciate if someone could let me now how to treat his behaviour for the better for everyone.

I tried this last month with my dad’s cat now I am living with my friend.

My kitten is 8 almost 9 weeks old. Sometimes he’ll be completely calm and happy, and playing with me, and other times, he’ll start biting my hand. I play with him, he has a few nice toys, and gets a lot of attention. Sometimes, it gets to the point where he bites me so hard, I start bleeding. If I say NO then he’ll just scamper away and then come back a little while later and bite me again. I’ve tried distracting him with toys, but nothing works. If anyone has had any experience with this kind of thing, please help!

i have two cats, Milady and Blackie. Milady only bite me sometimes when i'm petting her on hed belly but she usualy likes this. on the other side, Blackie bites alot. he bites every time he "fights" with Milady (she bites him too), but he bites me almost every time i touch him. i know he do that because he wants to play but it's annoying (if not irritating). he even bite me while he licks me in the face. i know how to grab him so he stop it but after a while he comes again to lick me and of course bite me. the other day he gave me a painfull bite on my nose and made me bleed and i slapped him on his butt for that. he stopped for a while but he started again. is this behavior because he is way younger than Milady? right now he's 7 months old and she is 2,5 yrs old, plys he is not yet steriled. will he stop this after he's sterile or is he gonna give me pain?

I have a problem my cat bites his own arm when I pet him on the back anyone know why I'm a bit worried?

Anyone know why your cat may softly bite and meow at you out of no where? Then when you try to pet them to see if they just want attention they start back softly biting you and making a whiney meow noise not allowing you to touch them or backs away but then when you walk away he follows you and meows? He has food and water and litter is clean. And this is like the fourth incident. He doesn’t bite hard or seem to be aggressive. It seems like he’s throwing a tantrum or something.

And so I took home my first kitten and after a few days she grew a full blown play biter because my dad played with her with his hands in many different ways. Now she starts it deliberately and as she's grown a little for the past few weeks, her teeth are getting bigger and sharper. I told him not to do it but he wouldn't listen. Now she doesn't want to forget this "play" and bites fiercely :(

I have to pick specific toys that are much more durable than "the bird". That kind of toy is very stimulating & works GREAT, but my big boy is able to (and will) destroy that upon first encountering the toy. Any other suggestions for more durable yet realistic toys. He does like other wands or dangly toys, they just aren't as realistic or enticing, obviously.

Every time I pick my cat up lately he play bites my arm. I can’t just let him bite because he draws blood. He doesn’t take punishment well. I tried the skin behind the neck thing. He will seek revenge and attack you when you walk by afterwards. He wants you to pet him then he will attack. It’s very random but happens every day. He gets enough play. He goes for hours straight every day. I never had a cat like him. I don’t know what to do.

we usually just shouted the cat's name out loud in case he was biting us, that way he would usually let go

those methods sound interesting but also sound like they would take a long time to start being effective.. i have a 6y old giant cat and he was biting like crazy when i first bought him as a kitten.. i suffered his terror for the first 10 months until one day i had enough. after he bit my ear drawning blood for the thousand time, i turned to him and bit him right back. he looked so shocked and hurt and run away.. he avoided me for 3 days and then suddenly came to me one night and for the first time since i bought him, he snuggled right up next to my face. that was also the first time ever i heard him purring.. i guess he gained some respect after i stoped being coward and showed him whose the boss cause he never bit since that day and now i have the most loving cat in the world.. might sound cruel but it worked for me. also i didn't bit hard obviously just enough to get a wtf reaction..

The only thing that has worked is to more like a cat in pain. He still bites but lets go quickly or is less aggressive when doing so. Little bits at a time!

Everyone freaking out over the scruff hold, calm down. She didn’t hold him up exclusively by the scruff, she was gentle and quick and made a good example of how to handle it. The cat appeared displeased but if it has hurt he would’ve made a sound. All i heard was a slight chirp. There are much more cruel ways to make a cat stop biting you, and hers is efficient. I’m very sensitive about animals too, but I’m not a blind fool about it.

This is gonna be a challenge. We have 9 cats but the first of which was raised from a 3 week old ( she was abandoned and rescued) for two years before the others came. She Only knows how to play by biting my hands. She sees the other 8 cats now and doesn't know how to play with them because she's never seen natural cat behavior before. I'd like to break her of playing by biting and learn to play like a normal cat.

Also this sounds weird, but when my cat won’t let go, i use a spray bottle. Just recently I didn’t have my spray bottle on me so i “spit sprayed” her like a llama. Not a lot, but right at her and it made her let go and look at me very studiously. A minute later she came to me looking for affection. When cats have real fights, spitting is sometimes part of their way of letting their opponent know that they’re serious. Not something i advise doing often but when in doubt, be a llama. XD

i got my kitten a bit older, maybe 2 or 3 months. it's a domestic, no particular breed! shes bitting me, i tried to play with her but she doesn't react much. she doesn't bite agressivly to hurt me but she starts to bite my figers in a way she tries to eat them!!! like she would eat the meat! one morning she climbed on my bed and ate my earring off! i dont know what to do, i dont want my face to be bitten off, i dont have a resolution to call in a professional because im not in the city! :(

My cat is totally disinterested in feathers. Her favorite thing is plain string. I used a squirt bottle when she bit me and shook my finger at her. Sometimes I also hissed. Now I can just hold up my finger and say, "don't bite!" and she will stop. She's a real monster car, and it wasn't easy.

So I’ve had my cat for about 8 years now, and he has always bit me, for no reason what so ever. It has always been random. Well now I have grown extremely tired of it and don’t know what to do. If you pull away when the cat bites you it's called a reflex. Not yanking your arm away would be like doing nothing when you get burned. I have a friend called Ozzy who bites animal's heads off when angry.
