i started integrating this metal bass tone philosophy into my sound for my pop rock with some hints of prog band. putting a slight distortion blended on top of my p bass clean tone (old roundwounds) helps me stick out as a distinct voice in the midrange, and when put in context it doesn't sound distorted.

"Piano tone" was my thing for 30+ years. Recently discovered distortion with blend. It's subtle, if I A/B the pedal on and off its obvious. But just a bit o grit you would barely notice on its own gives me fantastic sustain and makes the whole band sound bigger.

One thing they didn’t mention is that distortion really helps your bass cut on smaller speakers, too. The added harmonic content tricks your brain into perceiving the lower fundamental information on speakers that simply can’t produce such frequencies. Recording it in parallel then finding a nice balance melts the bass into the guitars while retaining that clean, ground-shaking low end. If you REALLY wanna kick certain parts into overdrive, you can come back and double yourself on piano (the low notes, obviously). Piano notes are clean, dramatic and have a satisfying transient…so while it’s obviously not for every moment of every track (and you wanna keep it low in the mix), it can be the climactic X-factor that makes someone go “dude!” when they hear your track.

Excellent stuff!! I've always loved deep growly bass sounds - like Doug Pinnick (King's X) has, or even Billy Sheehan. They both split their signal as well to retain that low end properly. But I love the old school approach too, for instance Lemmy and Geezer: using what 'used to be' a guitar amp 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I use the EBS Billy Sheehan pedal, which has indeed got a blend, and good EQ-ing on board as well.

Rickenbacker 4001/4003 basses are great for this because they have two outputs, one is regular mono like on a Fender, and the other is a TRS "stereo" which sends the output of each pickup through a separate channel. You can run the neck pickup to a clean bass amp and run the bridge pickup to a gained-up guitar amplifier (with a bass speaker cabinet, of course) and crank both amps into bass heaven. It's a lot of gear to drag to a gig, but when you get a chance to do it it sounds awesome.

Telling FOH to set it flat is the best advice, but you have to be 100% sure what you are sending them is great. I used to do this all the time. I would tell them that I am doing everything for you and, once I got them to trust me for 5 minutes, they'd always they'd say something like "I wish every bass player would come in and I don't have to do anything to make it sound good." There was one time I told an eng. "Im doing everything for you. Set it flat and turn off the compressor" and he didn't turn off the compressor. During sound check I asked him if he turned it off he said he didn't but I wasn't hitting it. He was surprised that I could still feel it and hear it. I said "Dude, I told you to turn it off".

Nolly was talking about some basses that looses quickly the overtones of a note as soon as you hit the string even with fresh strings. What causes a bass to loose the overtones of a note over time?
@static_motion
@static_motion Год назад
Overtones carry less energy than the fundamental. Every note decays over time, but the fundamental is the one that is most energetic, so it rings for longer. Fresh strings produce stronger overtones, which makes them more energetic and thus makes them decay over a longer period of time.
@OvyDynamic
@OvyDynamic Год назад
@@static_motion Yes, I know. I was referring to some issues with the bass. I have a fender american deluxe and compared to other similar basses that I tested, it lacks a lot of sustain and overtones. And it doesn’t sound overall as good as it can.
@static_motion
@static_motion Год назад
@@OvyDynamic Ah right. That would be up to the woods that make up the instrument, the hardware (nut and bridge), and in the case of Dingwalls for example the longer scale in the low strings also helps with it.
@indrapratama7668
@indrapratama7668 Год назад
@@OvyDynamic From my experience, that lack of sustain and overtones is caused by too low string tension. The cheapest trick I've found to solve that issue is by using thicker strings with gradual increase of tension per strings, say the G string has 34 lbs of tension, so the D string should have 35.5 lbs, the A string should have 37 lbs, and so on. Lower strings requires higher tension than higher ones. You basically need to assemble your custom gauge set. Standard gauge sets are almost always, if not always, undertensioned. Looks like they were assembled by string manufacturers, not guitar or bass players.😅 Those extra pounds of tension will give you that 'zing' that will really help you cut through a dense mix. The expensive trick is of course by purchasing a multiscale guitar/bass, like Nolly's.🤣

I just recorded my bass for the first time last night. Against 2 distorted guitars in the mix, I went DI and it just didn't sound right. I added a distortion/overdrive to the bass track. At first it had the normal settings for guitar and it sounded awful. I turned the drive down and down and down until it was almost at the lowest setting. That's where is sounded best in the mix, just a little bit of distortion. Just there to punch in the lows. I also put a high pass filter on all guitars and the sound cleaned right up. Still needs some work though. The tone on one guitar just didn't match the song.

Paul McCartney would plug his bass directly into an EMI engineer modded neve preamp then send it out to a 1962 bassman. He’d been doing that since stereo became standard

Guys, as a guitarist I'm not sure how I have to set the bass itself. Which pickup I have to use ? Neck or bridge, when I found something about that on internet, most of the time is 100% bridge. Is that the right way ?
@ionehkontehdiabo7627
@ionehkontehdiabo7627 10 месяцев назад
Depends what you like. I like the EMG PJ set, but if you have a bass with soap bars, you can get the pj set in soapbar housings, or the CS neck pickup and DC bridge pickup which kind of sounds like a PJ on steroids. I think honestly the only time I prefer bridge only is in like C# which I don’t tune to very often

What I am concerned about is playing in a Rock/Metalband with two (or even more) guitars. Do I even want a distorted Bass or is it just to much?
@kmdaykin
@kmdaykin 2 года назад
You want at least some distortion to tune your mids and highs, especially in a rock setup you want the bass to sit with the guitars as well as having your lows sitting with the drummer.
@lukebogartmix
@lukebogartmix Год назад
You even more likely want distortion, Periphery has 3 guitarists, all with very distorted tones. Distortion helps blend the bass into the guitars, creating a unified big sound
