Subscribed! I loved this video. I've been dealing with imposter syndrome nearly my entire adult life. I have earned a B.S. in Sociology and an MBA and I still lack confidence. I'm currently an HR Generalist, Latina, well into my 40s - I mention this because in our culture, education was not always at the forefront. And at my age, I should be settled in my career. However, I've always been fascinated with data analytics, I just never felt "smart enough" to pursue it. Just recently I decided to start pursuing it. Although I love my current job, I just don't know how long I want to deal with the drama that comes with working in HR. I'd like something that will provide me with a livable salary and less drama but also keep me challenged.
Hey thanks for the comment and sharing! It sounds like you're already well qualified and have a lot of work experience. Career changes happen all the time whether in you're in your 20s or 40s, so don't let that stop you. Life is too short to settle! If you enjoy data analytics please keep going. From my experience, anyone can get into the industry. With some studying and practicing you'll get there. Good luck on the journey!
Basic math is required such as mean, median, mode, percentile, average. You don't have to manually do these calculations but you should know what they mean and when to use them. It really depends on the industry and the job but in my role, I don't use more than those listed. Especially for an entry level role, it should be enough to know those.
I have a B.C.A and MCA in Computer Applications and am currently studying Project Management and IT. I worked as a front-end developer, but I find it very boring. I am planning to move to another field and start studying to become a data analyst. Is that a good choice? I have been researching a lot. I found your RU-vid channel and am now a new subscriber. Can you please suggest whether this is a good move for me? Thank you.
I've just discovered your channel, and I genuinely believe it's gonna be the best action in my data analyst journey. Thanks a million, Agatha. Please keep going with your videos. 🌹
This is the video that said to me " SUBSCRIBE". Thank you Agatha for putting these videos out there for us to see and learn from them. I have a question though, What platform would you recommend i start with? Thank you!
Hi, first of all thanks alot for joining youtube and making these videos, they are top-notch! I have been learning data analyst skills in last 6 months or so and I have learned a lot more than I expected to in this time. I feel like it is time for me to update my beginning projects with better ones and start applying for jobs but the job opportunities are quite low in my country. Fortunately I've always wanted to move abroad and work there but I don't know if it is even possible. I've encountered some job postings that doesn't accept applies from outside of their country and most of them doesn't say anything specific about that. Would you happen to know if such thing as my dream of finding a data analyst job abroad is possible without experience? Sorry for the long comment/reply. And thanks again for your work! They really help me keep myself motivated and can't wait to learn more from you!
@@bars7897i would suggest.... Get an entry-level position in your country.... work for more than a year....then try searching for jobs in abroad companies.....but let's wait to hear her suggestions 😅
Thanks for making this video. I've been on my journey transitioning to data analytics for a bit. I'm guilty of the "watching a bunch of videos" and impostor syndrome. Still working towards it though!
This video was very helpful and clear. Thank you so much. I subscribed! I’m on my journey to become a data analyst and I was feeling discouraged thinking I’ll never be good enough to land a junior position. I’m also feeling discouraged doing random assignments instead of hands on practice working with real data in my courses. Looks like I have to focus on my own personal projects for my portfolio.
Thanks for this video!!! I am taking a course in EXCEL via Udemy. Along with SQL and Tableau afterwards. Is there any other place you recommend to learn more?
yeah, it's a false statement. You had a business background. If you were coming from any unrelated to business (or similar) and/or IT - THEN I would assume it's applicable. For you - to give an honest title to this video - would be "how to transfer into business analytics for business professionals". Everything else is misleading.
To give an illustration, a person can not be a carpenter in a day just because he's able to put planks and shingles on a house. He just knows the basic concept, but if he's to put in hours in getting the foundational knowledge and able to apply it, he'll eventually be a carpenter. Sure, who's to say having a finance, maths, or MBA wouldn't give you an edge in analytics? Of course they do, but having no background doesn't negate the fact that learning fundamentals can get someone's foot in the door in data analysis.
When you said "They are going to be a lot of people watching this video that have the idea of being a data analyst but never do anything.Because they either have doubts, fear or are just lazy[😢sad truth you're talking to me] Im putting myself out there ,I will take action.I will start today with Excel🤚
Thanks for the video Agatha, It's very helpful. I am currently trying to transition from teaching to data analytics. Your tips will go a long way. I have done some Excel, SQL and Tableau and I'm working on some projects for my portfolio.
You're welcome! Sounds like you're already doing all the right things. With a teaching background, you have a lot of transferable skills such as communication so definitely use that to your advantage on your resume and interviews!
Thanks for sharing so many insights in this video Agatha! I am in the beginning of my journey to learn data analytics and you've inspired me to take action!
Thank you! Yes it's easy to just watch tutorials but taking action is what will get you closer to the data analyst role. I'm glad the video was helpful
Thanks - I'm doing the Google Cert. course for Data Analytics(almost finished). It's so-so for me. I use supplemental material to fill the gaps. My goal for by end of the year is to be somewhat proficient in Excel, SQL, Tableau and Python.
@@Dariusrae45636 A couple of things that can speed it up: Forget about the optional forum input(it doesn't advance the % done) and personal story videos(scan the text). Also, some of video instruction is poorly done (not up-to-date). It's important to take notes and to go with links in the reading materials. Don't get bogged down on something, press forward, takes notes and use outside sources to get you up to speed. This is just a survey course which gives you an overview. Is it worth, sure you get the certificates so at least employers know that you put in the time. Getting a good portfolio together is a must (when completed).
@@samsbodhitreehey i have some working knowledge of this field already. so i was thinking of going straight to the advanced data analytics course. any suggestions or is that a bad idea?
@@samsbodhitree And your absolutely right..... Same thoughts here too ....this course gives an introduction to data analytics field...but also very informative.....and to learn the tools and software, we need to find another source..... like RU-vid videos!
Thank you for your video! You addressed all concerns. I felt like you made this video for me! I needed this encouragement to keep going because I constantly feel like I am not good enough.
Absolutely fascinating insights into the world of data analytics! As someone venturing into the field, your video has been an invaluable resource for gaining a deeper understanding of the intricacies involved in data analytics. I appreciate the real-world examples you provided, making the content not only informative but also highly relatable. Looking forward to more content from you to continue expanding my knowledge in this exciting field.
I like how the video content is structured and provide actionable insights. Looking forward to see more videos on how to prepare portfolio/ job hunting tips from you!
I completed the Google Data Analysis Certificate in approximately a year and a half, but I did not work in it and I feel as if I do not know anything in this field. What is your advice?
The thing about certificates and courses is that it's really hard to learn without applying hands on knowledge. Even I get rusty when I don't use SQL for a few months. The best way to learn is to do a project. Whether it's through an internship, on the job, volunteer, or on your own. There are datasets available on Kaggle where you can start with a problem statement first and try to solve it using data analysis with the dataset to get a sense of what data analysis is.
Find it very related as my major was Sociology as well! Wanted to fully transition to be a data analyst for a while, I have taken so many course to learn R, python, SQL, tableau, PowerBI, you name it I have studied them all, and have built a portfolio on Kaggle, even have read stuff on statistics, but always lack the courage to take the leap, the furthest I have done is taking up a 50% analyst role in my current company and stayed 50% in my original role (not my most ideal choice but I thought it's a good starting point of an at least 50% analytics role). After watching this I am more confident, seeing someone with similar background doing the same! Also I am concerned about the age thing, just turned 30 to start fresh-ish.. But anyways, thank you for the great video!
Thank you for this, I have a degree in finance. I’ve bounced from accounting to accounts payable dept and I’m so bored. I’ve been looking into data analytics for over a year so I needed this push. Overall I’m scared lol graduated 2020 and I’ve just been working since so the fear of learning something new and moving into a new career has held me back.
Currently in my transition from the finance industry into data analytics. The thought of venturing into a new world was scary all the technical jargon was intimidating but I took a leap of faith and since then have not looked back, and now I'm forecasting that by the end of the year, I'll have a portfolio in place and start applying for jobs. So if there's any who really wants to start but is scared, just start you'll be amazed at how you begin to adapt over time.
Love this ❤️ yes I can completely relate to the leap of faith and feeling like you’re making no progress until you see how much you’ve done over time..I have a video on exactly this coming out next week! Also SO excited for how far you’ve come and for your portfolio 🎉
Hi Agatha, is there any specific data analyst course for agriculture background folks, I am looking for data analyst course for career advancement in field of agriculture.
Hey! I haven't come across any data analytics course specific to agriculture but the skills needed including excel, sql, a visualization tool and critically thinking will be the same across all industries. I have some resources links in the description above and I'd recommend doing a search online for agriculture specific courses. I do see some online but unfortunately I can't recommend a specific one. Hope this helps!
What about the promotion process? In my state, BA and DA are two specialized fields, and in the long run, will it be easier for BA to get promoted to PO or manager? What do you think about DA?
The promotion process really differs by company but you're right the BA and DA are 2 separate specialized fields usually. Many factors will determine which field gets promoted faster such as the industry, availability of positions, what type of manager. In my experience, I've had a lot of non-technical managers too so if your goal is to eventually be a manager I would say choose the path you enjoy more as moving up will be easier.
This was a really encouraging video. I am thinking of taking the free courses to see if Data Analysis could eventually be a career change for me from teaching. Thank you for making this content.
Oh, not the dreaded SSRS. I had to use it in college (mid 2000s). Horrible data visualization tool. I'm very happy for the rise of Tableau and later Power BI. Matlab was nice but used for hard science and academia. Not so much for business like Tableau and Power BI.
I've been hearing the software field is extremely hard to find a job at now days and people can't even get an interview after thousands of applications. Maybe I'll just get my CDL license and drive trucks which is more physically challenging but the fastest way to start earning close to a 6 figure salary.
The job market has been incredibly tough this year but the market does have its ups and downs. It's not realistic to expect a 6 figure salary for an entry level data analyst job immediately. It does take time. When you get to senior and higher levels the salary does go up more.
Hey Agatha , really nice video! I was wondering if I could help you edit your videos and also make a highly engaging Thumbnail which will help your video to reach to a wider audience .
Yes interview tips is on the list of videos! My portfolio at this point is all work related projects so I can't publicly share it. I will try to give more tips though!
It can be any question that you can solve with data and do an analysis with trends. For example, if you're looking at your bank statement you can analyze "what is the trend of spending in 2023?" and categorize the spending into "entertainment" and "food" to see what types of insights you can get.
In minute 9:27, when impostor syndrome is mentioned, that's when I felt identified immediately. I am aware that I use analytical skills every day, but not belonging even though that's where I want to be at is my fear.
I still struggle with this myself. You're not alone in feeling that way. It's an uncomfortable feeling but embracing it and using that to move past it helps!
Yes it's possible but you will need to leverage work experience. If you can get your foot in the door with any work experience related to the industry you want to work in and have hands on experience, you will stand out and have a better change to land a job without a degree.
Hey I go over this topic in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XHYfi5hQC3E.html the second topic in here is how much a data analyst gets paid and what factors go into it
The best way would be online. I personally use Google careers and would recommend linkedin to see if anyone in your network has internships or opportunities listed there.
Great video! You might have this already but how about technical videos about simple projects using Excel, then SQL, then Tableau and finally with Python. But I know that's a lot to ask. Thank you!
Thank you! I'll have to think about how to do technical videos if I do them but it's on the list for now. I have a long list of videos I want to create to help you guys so stay tuned!
Yes as a teacher you have great communication and presentation skills. Leverage your professional experience along with technical skills and that will help you transition to the data analyst field.
well said. I've been so blessed. I'm transitioning into being an analyst but had gotten lazy along the way. I'm going to be intentional from hence forth. Thank you so much and oh, I liked and subscribed!
Thanks so much for sharing the information! Thanks for the clear expression! Could you share more about how to make a resume? like how to include soft skills and how to show the project without Data analyst work experience to attract the recruiter to get an interview chance? thanks so much!
Please continue to share the knowledge, @agatha, thank you so much for your informative video regarding data analyst starting from "Day in the Life of a Data Analyst" it covers a lot and gives us an idea of what is the work as a data analyst. :-)
You're welcome! I'm glad it's helpful and gives an idea of what to expect as a data analyst. I just released a new one today that is more of a realistic day in the office: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kvO4cDQZ4hk.html
Thanks for the video, sharing and explanation! I dropped out of college, which is something I regret but can't do anything about now, but I don't want to waste the years I spent studying. I majored in applied math because I was quite interested in data science/analysis. I'm about to start participating in a data science bootcamp, so excited to start this journey. That's why I'd like to prepare myself as best as I could and your video really helped me a lot in giving me direction what to do. So, once again, thanks a lot!
I took a data science bootcamp too which I talk about in next week's video. It helped level up my skills but definitely requires a lot of discipline to still do a lot of studying on your own. Good luck with the bootcamp!
wow on the last day of 2023 and I saw your videos. They are so helpful! thank you for being so honest and direct! i really appreciate it! I wanted to become a data analyst but has no experience. I applied to so many jobs but I didnt even get a single interview despite I have a math degree😭 It is embarassing and depressing. Thank you for your videos now I have a better idea what i need to do!
Thanks so much for the thoughtful comment! I too got rejected several times before landing my job. It's all about what you learn from it and keep going! Happy New Year and good luck on the data journey!
