Can cheetahs be kept as pets? Is it even possible to own a pet cheetah?
MASpets is a channel dedicated to dispelling the myths and finding the light within the darkness of controversy about pet keeping. This channel provides information that is:
·Honest
·Fact-Checked
·Helpful
Check out exotic pet articles on PetHelpful (References and Sources provided!): pethelpful.com...
~Education is Key~
Welcome to MASpets! A channel dedicated to providing high quality information about exotic, alternative, and unique pets, as well as traditional ones. This channel supports the freedom of pet owners to care for the species of their choice as long as that animal has been shown to thrive in human care under the right conditions. We strongly believe that facts and education, not admonition, is the best policy for encouraging potential pet keepers to choose the best pet for their living situation. We believe there is no such thing as a ‘good pet’, and do not promote any particular species as pets, however we understand that the desire of some to own something different is essential to their expression and existence as an individual.
Whether you are considering a pet, or are just interested in the subject, this channel invites you to become informed about the exciting world of animal diversity.
There are hundreds of species of exotic pets! Some examples include: fennec fox, porcupine, serval, wallaby, boa constrictor, rainbow crab, bush baby, zebra, squirrels, ostrich, kinkajou, macaws, springhare, lemur, leopard gecko, tarantula, capybara, sloth, owl, cockatoo, muntjac deer, lion, short-tailed opossum, raccoon, scorpion, green iguana, and more.
Domesticated exotic pets include domestic rats, hamster, gerbil, goldfish, guinea fowl, Bengal cat, peacock, fainting goats, and sugar gliders.
We post introductory videos to animals that can be kept as pets, care tips, address controversies, legal issues, and more. Please see the posted links for more information about this subject!

A couple positive points on owning a cheetah: they are known to be peaceful towards humans in comparison to other large cats. They also can't climb due to their claws not being retractable, so you won't have to worry about them getting stuck in trees or other high spaces. Though if they decide to run away, you'd better own a fast vehicle.

Not true, I visited Africa many times and once I have seen a cheetah stuck on a power line dead from electrocution, so regardless of their claws not being retractable, they can still climb very well.

Personally, I think the difference is about the natural power and aggression of animals. Cheetahs are harmless to people. Even wild ones do not pose much of a threat to adult humans. Pantherine big cats are different though. Even the most benevolent, rich and freedom loving pet owner has to maintain a level of control over their animals as a matter of public safety. For this, Tigers, Lions and Jaguars are just too powerful. Should things go wrong, even for a minute, you're talking about injured and possibly dead people, and certainly a dead pet. We intuitively understand this about dogs. Tiny dogs often get a free pass to behave like shit from their owners, because potential consequences are small. Cheetahs are the proverbial Chihuahuas when compared with any true Big cat. As far as cats go, Leopards are the very limit of acceptable private ownership. They can be kept safe from themselves and from society, and society can be kept safe from them.
@Stpunk17
@Stpunk17 3 года назад
While I think all said is true. Zoos and wildlife rescues have kept tigers and lions safely so it’s very possible. Just like with what you said about dogs. People have dogs that can are capable of getting someone hurt. But there are lots of instances where they are kept responsibly and are not a threat to the public

So basically cheetahs are social animals. Sounds like they’d be a good candidate to domesticate. And I mean DOMESTICATE not tame and call it domesticate. Like several generations of human friendly traits selected for. Domestic cheetahs with genes added via crispr cas-9 and with the understanding that you need to breed a cheetah seem like excellent pets

Wrong! Being rich does not demonstrate the character and commitment needed to sustain the animals demanding needs for wellness. The first hurdle should be that a person commits 2,000-3,000 hours to doing volunteer work at a facility that successfully keeps healthy exotic cats in captivity. Afterwards, passing a written, oral and practical test that proves you know WTF you're doing with a Cheetah. The second step should be to have a site plan designed and approved before it's constructed, to keep Cheetahs IF approval will be granted upon successful construction and inspect of the enclosure and supporting infrastructure. Supporting infrastructure might include an extra large deep freezer to store large quantities of meat for the animals nutrition, medicine, enrichment, etc. A reliable water source. Shade. Hiding places within the enclosure for the animal. Trees within the enclosure. A till to loosen up soil in the enclosure that inevitably gets packed down so firmly by the cat that it's as hard as concrete, especially along the fence line where cats tend to pace. This is important for good health of the cats paw pads and for enrichment. An experienced veterinarian in the area. A good relationship with first responders, city council, neighbors and others who might have a vested interest. Money is certainly necessary, but should not be a first consideration. If money were a primary consideration, any moron billionaire could buy one, get tired of it the next day, and then what? If you really want one, I challenge you to start doing volunteer work at a wildlife sanctuary. If you're lucky, they'll start you off on poop pickup detail along with cleaning and filling water bowls. See if you last a month doing purely just that and learning as much as you can about the animals in the process. If your commitment to that simple but critically important task does not diminish, maybe you have what it takes for the next step, understanding how to visually assess a cat's health and behavior. Eventually, maybe you'll be trusted to prepare meals. These cats are 100% reliant on humans. They're more reliant on humans than a small domestic can. A domestic cat can leave the house and hunt a mouse or lizard for a meal and more easily enriched by typical domestic surroundings. None of this is the case with a Cheetah. Thinking about taking a vacation one day, or possibly get hospitalized or otherwise become unavailable for the Cheetah? What's your back up plan for the Cheetah's continued well being? I did exactly the type of volunteer work described and enjoyed it because I respect and appreciate the animals. I also know based on first hand experience, there's more work than joy that goes into husbandry, and that's okay, if you're truly up for the task. You'll only know by doing the dirty work for an extended period of time, as a volunteer. Don't ask to be paid. Sorry for the rant. I felt like writing about the topic. Hopefully it changes peoples' minds about wanting to own these beautiful cats.

It’s redundant to convert Cheetshs into a domesticated pet animal. They would ultimately & likely quickly lose & de-evolve the processes & resulting genetics that make them what we love about them… which is naturally & literally a direct result of how they live & breed etc in the wild…. simple logic, common sense & how we KNOW genetics work - they would quickly evolve to be much different of course. It’s not complicated at all & as such ignorant to even desire changing the species Best way to have a “pet cheetah” is to go move to Africa on a reserve & befriend your future “pets” in the wild as such without interfering in any way shape or form with their lives in the wild…. Good luck with doing that lol

A correction: It is nonsensical to say that 'human racial groups' have more genetic diversity than cheetahs since there is no useful biological definition of 'human racial groups' for which we can make such comparisons. For example there is more genetic human diversity within a few regions in Africa than there is in the rest of the world combined. The quoted portion only sounds scientific due to the societal persistance of the eugenics psuedoscience. Otherwise nice little video on the problems with people desiring cheetahs as pets
@Maspets
@Maspets Год назад
Any animal, including humans, can be traced genetically if they reproduce for generations within a certain population, that much I know. That's why we can genetically test dog 'breeds' and there is a test that can trace my ancestry, so there must be SOME "useful biological definition" whatever you want to call it. Don't waste my time with a semantics game. "Five subspecies are considered valid by most taxonomists. But the validity of the existence of sub-species is now questionned. Genetic research has shown the genetic distance between two subspecies A. j. jubatus and A. j. raineyi, is trivial, 10 to 100 times less, for example, than the genetic distance between human racial groups (Marker, 1998).
