Calling all travelers! The Department of Homeland Security is requiring you to get a new form of ID. It's called a Real ID and if you want to travel, you must have one by October 1, 2020. There's been a lot of confusion about how to get a Real ID. A spokesman from the California DMV, tells us what you need to get yours.

The " MUST HAVE" to fly has been pushed back to 2025, unfortunately. CA has it all figured out now and it appears that they have gotten the process of renewing your drivers license or state ID card cleaned up and speed-ed up. It was easy for me even in the middle of the COVID debacle. Requires birth certificate or naturalization papers to prove you are a US citizen. You also have to submit proof of residency, which can be a receipt for utilities on your home in the state. There are several options to show proof of residency. But, if you have a passport card, you do not need the Real ID, as you passport shows of what country you are a citizen and all the other info to prove who you are.

I already had a real ID on my drivers license, since my license expired I paid $37,- to renew my license, DMV removed my real ID sign of my class C license, and mailed me a regular class C license, so I to visite DMV in person they charged me another $30,- to switch back my original drivers license with real ID sign on it , this is a real fraud, and new ways to rippingoff seniors in California ???????

Real ID is intended to be proof of US citizenship. H1B visa holders are not citizens. The only ID you need is your passport issued by your country of origin.

@@chrisusand7154 It is not like they don't actually scan your current driver's license or passports and have been doing that for several decades. So they have long been gathering that information now, without the need for a verified Real ID.

@@chrisusand7154 While you might be correct. You won't be able to travel (fly) ANYWHERE, even within your country without it. I definitely do NOT plan on rushing out to get it, but from what I read, by October 2020, it will be mandatory in the U.S.

Hello Thank you for all that information you shared. I'want to know if l'm living in Haiti it's necessary to have real ID. Because l have my driver license and my Passport. My country doesn't talk about real ID. But sometimes l' moved to USA may l need Real ID. It's necessar to have real ID to come in USA ?

Be careful. You can travel there but Mexico may require other forms of travel documents to enter at ports of entry. I.e. need a valid passport to enter, not a California Real ID. In fact, you will need a passport to reenter the US from any foreign country including Mexico. A Real ID is not a replacement for a passport, but a passport can be used in place of a Real Id.

I tried to get into a military base to drop off my wife at work and the officer said I can't enter...I told him, I have a REAL ID though. He just laughed (he probably thought that I was saying that it wasn't a fake ID) and said I'm not letting you in without a sponsor.

I'm not rushing because I can always fly with my passport card. I'm not getting Real ID for now because I don't want to gather the paperwork to go to the DMV in person and wait in line. I'm going to use my passport card to fly within the USA. To me, it's just another card to carry, no big deal.

I still get bank statements, and utility bills. I never signed up for paperless, cuz I think it's easier to be ripped off. I've been bamboozled twice by the DWP, and don't trust them.

So, a Driver's License which has ALWAYS been an I.D., is now suddenly NOT a real I.D.??? Then if not now, was it ever??? Now, we NEED? a "Real I.D."??? Trying to understand this! And the Birth Certificate you've ALWAYS had and used WITHOUT incident, always accepted, is suddenly NOT acceptable if it's "Not State Certified"??? At a new $50 cost??? Gee, What's next??? Your Marriage Certificate is no longer valid because the State will required a new "Certified Marriage Certificate"??? Will that mean, your marriage then isn't valid as it will no longer be "Real"???
