Most honest, straightforward, and informative video I have found on RU-vid. Finally! Thank you for not beating around the bush or clickbaiting only to tell a story.
I watched this video a few weeks ago, and today I landed my first teaching job! I will be teaching English at a middle school in New Hampshire, and I am so excited!! For anyone wondering, I was invited in for an interview with a search committee -- the principal, assistant principal, and two teacher. Then, I was invited in the next week to teach a sample lesson and have a follow-up interview. The search committee called later that night and offered me the job. Good luck out there everyone :)
Thank you SO MUCH for this video. I'm pretty close to your area and I've been hunting all summer...I'm trying to stay positive to land my first elementary job. I've put in about 80 apps...it's absolutely maddening. It'll all be worth it though eventually!

I love the app Genius Scan. 100% free and you can use your camera to crop and scan a document. You email it to yourself. Presto, you have a quick way to upload any resumes, transcripts, reference letters, etc. :)
Thank you so much for this! I just graduated with my bachelors this past May & my journey to the road of teaching has kind of been a long one. My plan is to go to grad school in the spring but I'm taking a semester off to get some experience in subbing. I'm seeing people from my high school who already have teaching jobs lined up and I'm feeling a bit defeated but I know everyone has different experiences so I shouldn't dwell on it :)
i just got my first teaching job this week and in florida, we start on 03 august! my experience, being so late in the summer, was kinda of a whirlwind -- i did my initial interview over the phone at my current job on a 15-minute-break and by that evening, i had an official offer and an email from HR about all sorts of crazy things i had to get done this weekend, including a TB test! i'm so thankful to have even gotten a position so late, though [was waiting on subject area exam results], so i'm willing to have a stressful week to get through everything.
Oh my gosh, how stressful! Oh yeah, I forgot to mention you always have to do a TB test on top of everything else! Crazy, but how exciting for you to have a new job!!
I’d even say start to look for jobs in January and February, especially in high need areas. I’m in Nevada there are tons of jobs open right now in Vegas. I got an interview and offer at the end of February and my application was released in February. (A few days ago!) Don’t wait until May!
This video was really helpful, I'm a high school senior who had decided to become a teacher and a lot of teachers have had a huge impact on my life. I think all your videos are words of wisdom and continue to help me with the choice to become an educator. xxoo(:
I landed my teaching job two days ago! Your advice was very useful even though I already went through most of this process lol But I will definitely share this with my colleagues! Thank you for this video!
Thank you for your videos. I have watched your videos and other You tubers, and they really helped me have great interviews when given the opportunity. Unfortunately here in TN, if you do not have tenure, you are out of luck. I had great interviews, but I'm not tenure. During these past 8 yrs I only filled in as interim. As an interim at different schools, the principals and teachers would let slip the real hiring process. Basically, principals here are very lazy in the hiring process and want that quick hire. "Oh he/she has tenure? That's the one to hire and we will just do these interviews as a formal process." The first tenure to apply 95% of the time gets the job because they don't want to spend all that time going through files, follow ups, and trying to decide. The only two times a principal was serious about hiring me full time, the principal focused on who I knew. When I tried to transition to my abilities and accomplishments, the principals zoned out. Then, he/she would transition to "So how is so-and-so doing? Didn't you play football together?" But anyway; thank you for your videos.
Good recruitment approaches should have commonalities across district and countries. I have a new channel aimed at UK based educators (interview tips for teachers, etc) but all my advice will apply overseas too. Good luck to all the teachers looking for new jobs. Education needs great people so stick at it!
I just got my first teaching job in June and I start PD in a little over a week. I definitely didn't realize how complicated the job search process was before I started applying places! Sometime in the fall/winter will you do a video on teaching with a baby? Like how his schedule affects yours, etc. I'm not planning to have kids any time soon but I really enjoyed watching your teaching through pregnancy videos!
That happened to me and I stuck with the school I had already signed with. I always wonder what would have happened if I didn't! It happened to my husband last year and he went with the one who paid better! :)

Thanks for this video! I'm Australian, so it wasn't super relevant for me, since we have a totally different system of applying, but I found it really interesting! It's super interesting to hear the differences between how you guys organise things like districts and pay scales. I'm a first year teacher, so I hope the interview questions you mentioned will be helpful for me really soon.
I'm really interested in how other countries do things as well! I wish there were more collaboration because some nations do things so well that we struggle with here in the US.
+toocoolformiddleschool blog (toocoolforschoolblog) yeah, that would be really cool! I think there a lot of things you guys do well too. It's kind of hard to compare some things though, since there's such a population difference between Australia and the US. I'm sure that's one reason your schools are quite different to ours.
Thanks so much for your help! I'm currently looking for a teaching job and ya girl needs all the tips. There's a great app my friend told me about in college called Cam Scanner. You can scan your documents from your phone and it can convert it into a pdf and more. It's free and such a time-saver!
This is pretty dead-on for how I got hired in California. I start my first year in two weeks (ish...). I used my student teaching mentor to write my recommendations.
Thank you for this! I am currently going to a community college to get my general education out of the way and then transferring somewhere to complete my education and get my credentials to teach elementary school. I looked on EdJoin earlier this summer for an aide position however the dates they would've need me to come in didn't line up with my schedule :( I then looked on Indeed and found an assistant teacher job at a preschool nearby so I would at least have some paid teaching experience! Thank you so much for some insight on the newer application techniques!
I was let go of my first teaching job (middle school, grades 5 then 6) recently after 2 years in an all african-american school as "not a good fit" as a result of "something I spoke out lout" that was construed as not "racially informed enough' (I was correcting a student). The administration said in my meeting they would be willing to provide a recommendation that "spoke to my strengths". How should I request these letters of recommendation (just an email?) and how should I word my cover letter to mention stopping the job in April before year end? I want to start submitting my materials to districts. any help is appreciated!
Thanks for the video. I live in Indiana and am looking for a different job. Indiana has its own site for schools to post jobs on, but some don't so you have to actually check each school districts website. I am interviewing Friday, school starts in 2 weeks, so it was a last minute hire.
If there is a panel of 8 would you walk around the table and shake everyones hand or do it as they introduce themselves. I will be an alternate certification applicant so I don't have to be jobless to student teach for 5 months.
I am an Indian with Bachelor degreeB.E.i would like to become a math school teacher in Moon school district, Pennsylvania.what I have to do next... please help me....... Please reply me..
Hey!! Thank you so much, your videos have been so helpful to me. if given a choice, would you recommend doing student teaching in fall or spring? I am going back for my masters in education to get my license and I have some flexibility on when I start, which will determine when I student teach. was curious if you had any thoughts on which was better from an experience and also job hunt standpoint. thank you!!
Jordan8734 hi there! My student teaching assignment was the whole school year, but I remember thinking it was good that I taught through the spring when students are much harder to motivate! It's kind of a good situation to experience and prepare for.
Thanks!! just one more question. I am foreigner teacher (central america) and I wanna apply for a job. I have my bachellor degree and experience but I never teached before at USA.. What could you recommended me?
Yes, both! I forgot about those! Doing a lesson plan is super awkward because you just do it for a group of adults sitting there staring at you, haha :)
Ma'am I have postgraduate degree in Mathematics. Now I am in teacher training program. I am from India. Can I become a teacher in usa? What is the next step?
Hi I am from India and i have done my masters in English. I want a job as a teacher in U.S so what are the criteria to get a teaching job there! plz help....
Amazing video as always. I was wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing about how difficult or easy it was for you to get your degree in your field. You said you taught history, so how hard was it to get the degree in that and also how high did your classes go in terms of covering history? I want to become a high school math teacher and I have to go pretty far in mathematics for my degree, so i was wondering if you had to do the same for yours.
Hi! For me history is my passion so even though the coursework was really difficult, it was what I wanted to do. I was willing to pour myself into it so I did well. If I had to take those high level math classes I'm sure it would have been a different story!
Hey there! This will be my first year teaching and the other teachers have reached out to me and mentioned trying to stay on the same page by using whole brain teaching and interactive notebooks. I'm really curious about what your thoughts are on these two strategies! I'll be teaching 5th grade science and I'm not sure interactive notebooks will work well in my class.
Hi! I have a video on interactive notebooks, and I am still learning about whole brain teaching myself. You've reminded me to order that book I have in my Amazon cart! Haha
hello, i'm looking for a teacher experience in USA and I am fro Brazil! i have a license degree and also some experience on teaching meddle school here in Brazil! i would be proud if you help me to find out the steps to follow or maybe somepne that can help me out... thanks for the video
I love your videos. I'm half way through my teaching degree. I can't wait to start working. What would you say your teaching style is, maybe you already have a video on this that I haven't yet seen. I am really intrigued by whole brain teaching right now. Do you have any thoughts or experience with this style?
I know a few teachers who really love it and I've researched it a little bit. I definitely think it's a good thing to know more about. Thanks for reminding me--I think I'm going to go do some more reading on it now! :)
+toocoolformiddleschool blog (toocoolforschoolblog) thank you! I will definitely be watching all of your videos to prepare for my first year in the classroom!
i am from india...did masters in political science and currently pursuing bachelor of education (Second semester). what qualifications do i need to get a job as a teacher in canada (toronto)? and also what if i want to go for masters in education in canada?
Does anyone know if I could be eligible to be a school teacher in the US while still in college + 5 years of elementary teaching experience abroad (2nd, 3rd and 4th grade)?
