For point 5 (improving communication), I heard Mike Lombardi say something like "Actuaries have no problem communicating with other actuaries, it's only when they have to talk to other people that problems arise"

Thanks for all your videos and information! I am a software guy with a Math and Computer Science degree and some experience in that field. I am now interested in this, and applied to my first entry level Actuarial Analyst position yesterday... and got an interview today! The reason for this I think is because Actuarial Science these days is transforming because of technology that gathers TONS of statistics (also known as Big Data), which uses a lot of programming and statistical modeling software. The fields are combining. There will probably be a trend forming where data scientists (Big Data analysts/programmers) work with Actuaries... if this isn't already a known fact, I believe it will happen. SO, my point is... learn SQL, VBA, and Python programming languages and you may just have the leg up in the job market you need. That's my two cents! Thanks again Brea!

Agreed! All great languages to learn. Congrats on the interview! Did you get an interview without any exams passed?!

Hi Brea! Thanks for posting this video. I am going back to school this summer with hopes of landing an actuarial position eventually. Your last tip was a little unsettling for me! My first degree was in fine arts, and my reasoning for going back is that (a) a maths degree will make me far more marketable for "transition jobs" like underwriting or accounts management, (b) internships are more likely to go to college students, and (c) being part of an active actuarial student org will increase my ability to network. Would love to hear your thoughts if you have time, thanks!

Hi Christopher - There are certainly some benefits of going back to school. You're right that a math degree will probably make you more marketable for the transition jobs, and that internships are probably more likely to go to college students. But is that worth 3-5 extra years of school? The unique thing about actuarial work is that employers care more that you can pass exams than what degree you got in school. So if you can prove to them that you can pass exams you've met their qualification for that. The other things, like internships and related experience certainly help, but you can probably get somewhat relevant experience without going to school for another degree. But that being said, this is all just my opinion. Others may feel differently and there's no guarantees on how everything would eventually work out no matter which direction you choose to take. Wishing you best of luck! :)

Hi Brea, thank you for all of your informative videos. Concerning your last comment about advising persons to not do a Masters in Actuarial Science to improve their chances of landing an actuarial job, was that just based on the qualification route in the SOA and CAS? In terms of going the IFOA route, in which some Masters in Actuarial Science allow you to get up to 6 or 5 exam exemptions and sometimes even do an internship as part of the programme, would you still say the same?
@EtchedActuarial
@EtchedActuarial 5 лет назад
Yes I was referring to the SOA/CAS route. Sounds like the masters may be worth it in your situation but I can't say with certainty. You could probably pass the exams in less time than it would take you to get the masters (and thus the exam exemptions). You may be also able to find an internship after passing a few exams. So, maybe the masters is just more money and time spent than necessary? Sorry I can't offer more guidance on this.

Subscribing to Toastmasters for an actuarial job interview is like when prospective NFL players hire a sprinting coach for the combine lol

actually, my big problem is getting this "RELATED EXPERIENCE" 🥴.... Does volunteering in an office job count as Related experience?
@EtchedActuarial

It may not be directly related but you can use this experience to find a more relevant stepping stone position.

Please an answer to this question : In Canada there is an organization that agrees to accredit actuarial examinations through university courses named ICA. My question is, does it have the same weight as the passing of these exams? or the employers really prefer someone who passes the exams? If i pass P and have FM and IFM by accreditation is it like i have passed the 3 not just 1 ? Thank you so much!
@EtchedActuarial
@EtchedActuarial 4 года назад
It's the CIA (Canadian Institute of Actuaries) and from what I've heard, some employers will prefer that you've passed the actuarial exams rather than just getting credit for them. By using the accreditation system, you may be limiting your job opportunities. Hope this helps!
@Emily-en8rt

@@EtchedActuarial but they would only know if you got the accreditation if they asked you?

@@Emily-en8rt Yes, though most people would put when they passed the exams on their resume.

Hi mam, I am a in my final year of graduation and have cleared 4 Actuarial papers from IFOA, UK . I am pursuing my graduation with major as commerce (finance), and being a resident of India are there any chances for me getting an Actuarial job in Canada or other countries abroad.
@EtchedActuarial
@EtchedActuarial 5 лет назад
It's certainly possible! I'm not sure exactly what process you'd need to follow in order to work in another country, but you will have to jump through a few more hoops than you would if you were to work in the UK. Good luck!

If you pass your exams on the first try, does that make you stand out as a candidate vs. someone who took multiple attempts?
@EtchedActuarial
@EtchedActuarial 6 лет назад
In my experience, it's rare for employers to ask you how many attempts it took you to pass an exam. I doubt it would be a very important deciding factor unless the candidate tried it 4+ times. But even then if that was a concern it's something that they'd likely ask about at the interview and the candidate could explain the issue and what they learned from it, and how they're going to take steps to ensure that it doesn't happen in the future.

I'm currently in my final year of graduation and completed 4 papers(FROM IFOA) ,I want to learn about human psychology also, Do you think I should go for Masters in Human Psychology or should I go for an actuarial job?
@EtchedActuarial
@EtchedActuarial 6 лет назад
That's a big decision that I don't have enough details about for you personally. You should try to talk to people in both fields, and do lots of research before making that decision. If you just want to learn about human psychology you can do that in books and online rather than going for your masters. So potentially you can do both!

Are you still interested in trying to get into the field? I can have a look at your resume and provide feedback if you'd like. Related experience and technical skills are very helpful in getting a job so if you didn't have that it might have been part of the problem too. However, this can be fixed! 🙂

She said it wouldn’t be easy. You’re gonna have to look for other math jobs and get the experience first. Hope you majored in something besides actuarial science, cause that only works out if you do internships

Great content, just a suggestion. Keep the camera a little back so that ur torso and hands is also visible, since seeing only your face is kind of boring. And you could use your hands more, inorder to express better. Otherwise great content 😊😊
