April 2020 I was working as an operations/warehouse manager. Decided I wanted to get into hvac without going to school. Found an apartment maintenance job and learned a ton working on Goodman heat pumps for two years. Landed a dedicated HVAC residential service tech position in October and have already doubled my income and love the job. I still don’t know much, but I know enough that management leaves me alone to work and I teach myself along the way.
Hey man any advice, I’m trying to find a dedicated hvac residential service tech position. I live in Ottawa , Ontario Canada. I’m licensed with my gas license. and I have gas piping experience for 2 years, worked as a water heater service technician with furnace and AC PM calls. Also, I have installation experience for hot water tanks, furnaces, AC’s etc . But it seems like companies are picky with their hiring selection or the position is not available for idk what ever reason that could be . 3 companies I’ve applied to I’ve expressed interest in a service position but the response I’m getting is that they have a install helper position available. I don’t know if all companies are like that where they make you start as a helper and build you up. Do I just keep looking and searching in hope of landing a service tech position?
@@hvac24 hey man, it’s hard to say cause I don’t know anything about the Ottawa job market. Sounds like you’re more than qualified for a basic maintenance or service technician role, but if the companies in your area are only wanting to hire guys as install helpers that might be your ticket in. What are you currently doing?
@@millenialmemoirs yea makes sense. Right now currently I’m gonna work a part time job at my old job in the restaurant. The old company I worked for laid me off and I’m glad they did because I was ensured for 4 months getting paid. At the same time the company was way too corporate. All they cared about was numbers. No appreciation for the workers. It was unionized too but wow the pay scale was unfair for the type of work they would make us do. Also, I would be paired with a different crew every day of the week. Which is ok, but after a while every person wants something done their own way and then you’d forget at times the way that person wanted it done. I am glad though I got hvac installation experience. There’s a local company next to my house they are a fairly sized hvac business nothing too crazy. They are the ones that said they could start me as a helper and I would work my way up. I think the best plan would just to start “green” and go from there. Take what ever I learned and apply it to the new hvac job
I took a few classes in HVAC. I applied for scholarships and got in for completely free. My instructor Worked at a Company as a Supervisor. He mentioned the company needing a Helper/Scrapper. I expressed interest and got the interview . Got the Job. Im 19 ,didn’t expect to get the job thinking they weren’t going to take somebody my age seriously. Apparently i made a good impression on my instructor and the manager interviewing me.This is going to be my First full time job . Wish me Luck boys. I start in a couple weeks.
I wanted to be a plumber but got put in HVAC at company and started chasing service work after 5 yrs or so making and installing duct work. Never touched a jug of freon but past my universal test so I figured what the hell . 29 yrs later I still Love service work.👍 Good pay too.
i recommend starting as a helper on a good install crew. it’s a right of passage and like the boot camp of the trade. you’ll learn a lot more of the skills you need to be a good tech plus some system design and building code. it’s also very valuable to know what install is all about. eventually you can then decide if you like install or service better and you’ll be a much more well rounded professional.
THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I DID AND WENT THROUGH. no one would hire me without experience so I went into pipe fitting which got me into building maintenance which go me into field service and now I'm going back to HVAC and building a wealth of skill I made my self more valuable. but now the down side I'm facing companies are afraid to pay me .lol always somehting
Then why is anyone teaching degree in technical colleges in elsewhere if you have to get into apartment maintenance or elevator maintenance in order to actually get into the field? Then people would have to be ripping you off because you're getting a useless degree that no one respects. And you have people in the field that have years of experience that are instructors and they know that this degree is useless. Nobody should have to do any other thing than to go to school for this and get trained properly in the first place. It makes the degree useless if you have to go and do some other job for a number of years in order to get something you should get with a degree. I've also worked with people personally before that will tell you that people that go to school are just college boys and they talk about them like they're some sort of useless person that is of an opposite political party or something. Those same people by the way will tell you you can go on RU-vid and learn everything you need in the first place. HVAC isn't installing satellites into orbit or anything like that
I just graduated high school and considering the trades since not going to college. would you recommend going straight into and finding a school or apprenticeship.
@@Gasahlean apprenticeship! It's a lot to learn. I was a construction superintendent before going into hvac. Went to a technical college that's veteran operated for one month. Got a job with an amazing company. Followed a seasoned tech for a month. Then I was sent off on my own.
Im almost in the same boat. during school, i had a 6 day internship, and during school, i worked as hotel maintenance. until the COVID19 pandemic got me laid off. but in the upside, i have completed my Associates in HVAC, and my resume is sent out to multiple employers looking for install helpers. I have my EPA cert, but currently unemployed. I had an interview the other day with a well known and growing company, but I'm sure they declined me from my lack of experience and knowledge in construction. their job search filter on indeed was set to entry level, but their description said "minimum 2 years HVAC experience." so I'm over here like WTH?? LOL hopefully i get a call soon again.
Just curious you have got a job now? I just finished my epa without experience also. Nowadays any company is wanna hire a technicians have minimum 1-2 year experience.
You want training people who want to hire you with no experience are many times assholes because they want people they can pay low wages and never be a threat to them. Yes this is a real thing. I repeat do not accept a job without training this is for your own good
Thank you for making this video I’m in the middle of HVAC school right now still on my first semester but I already have a full-time job as a grocery stocker and I don’t want to lose it. From your experience as a maintenance worker were you mostly on call and what do you think of maintenance jobs for restaurants because I’ve been told to avoid them.
why were you told to avoid them? Im trying to get into some sort of heating AC maintenance position because it seems like the lifestyle that fits me and my needs best.
I worked 6 years ago in nc I was green in the field but enjoyed every minute of it I'm trying to go to school and get epa certification for hvac i like the feeling of getting up early starting a company truck and just driving to new construction sites and doing rough in and service work this trade is awesome and would like to go as far as possible with it thank you for these videos 100 percent helpful keep the videos coming
Follow the tips that Andrew gave in the video. I finished HVAC school back in November, and it took me about a month to find a job. I was sending out my resume here there and everywhere, and I wasn't getting anywhere. I was ready to go into a maintenance role, but then I was offered a position. Don't just apply online, call the places, call them and ask for the hiring manager, show up in person, and bring your resume. Maybe hire a professional resume writer. Hope this helps. 🙂
Im thinking about leaving my hvac job and going to school for hvac. 2 months of training and im in the field doing maintenance calls that turn into service phone calls
Hello sir, i need sponsorship for visa work for HVAC, but im just star from appreantice refrigration, i was looking for sponsorship for getting visa skilled

I have 6 years experience in HVAC in india. And i know how to install split air conditioner, duct, window air conditioner and how to repair. Please Guide me. How will i get the job. Thank you
I been a facilities technician for a aerospace company for 6months and I haven’t even knew I could even back door to hvac. Thank you for the tip, I will keep grinding and let you know when I get that hvac certification 🤙🏾
Hey bro, I’ve been doing light commercial and residential for 2 years now. I want to get into refrigeration, but I have no experience in it. What advice can you give me
Any tips or suggestions for a 5 2 female 125lb that's worked in school maintenance and custodial seeking to get certified in HVAC in MI. Obviously I'm never taken serious due to the fact I'm a female.. I love working with my hands, and fixing minor issues, you never know what the day could bring. Currently in MI if you don't have any degrees, or certifications some community colleges are allowing adults 25 and older to start their associates degree or certain certifications for free! I am currently just a custodian and want to expand in this field, would getting certified be worth it?
Thank you! I wish I had known this before my son got into this field. He attended UEI graduated Nov. They have not been helpful and they did not tell their students the truth as far as how difficult it would be to.find a job in this field of work especially with no hands on experience. Yet, the talked.about how much money They can make and that is was encouraged him to be a student at UEI and to sign on dotted line/loan. They spoke highly on money, the money was the bait. 🤦🏽♀️My son has been a little discourage yet not giving up. This video is a blessing and right on time. I am going to pass this on to him. I know this will give him hope. Thank you so much. I appreciate this video.💯 I found out about RSI after the fact🤦🏽♀️😔
My family is in Hvac and we do commercial installs the only problem is most of the pay is under the table so I have no proof of work history how would advance or get a job at another company with no proof of experience
Heating and air is a walk in the park for some of us Refrigeration is another story This is where we don't use A thermostatwe We use refrigeration pressures to cut off cut in the compressor End pump down selenoids I don't hold a havoc or refrigeration license at all But I service 10 different restaurants in habit refrigeration and the hot side of the restaurant business fixing everything After all there are wires that control every component in a restaurant learning how That unit works is everything to troubleshoot and fix
couldnt have said it better myself. I am a maintenance supervisor right now and don't know more than the basics of HVAC repair, the entire field is FILLED with underqualified HVAC repairmen
Good morning I just saw your video. my question for you is how can one start their career in the HVAC industry when they did school all online? I went through Penn Foster Career school, which the schooling was all online. I got no hands on experience, would you still recommend building maintenance?
This is exactly what two guy that I know did to get their foot in the door and after a year of experience they ended up going to an actual HVAC company
@ETomatoeMan how was it in california? I'm training to be an hvac technician in california. I really dont want to move and I thought California had good opportunity for hvac workers
@ETomatoeMan ah ok! I'm working like a slave rn at usps. Been backed up because covid, I'm a mail carrier and I work 12 hours a day 7 days a week. I need a social life and work is consuming me. In the hvac trade do companies normally do 40 hours a week? I dont mind a bit of overtime, but when I'm touching 72 hours, I lose my mind. I feel like a ticking bomb ready to hurt anyone. I need work balance and I know hvac has a ton of work, but do these companies work with that?
@@Phaminator525 My dad has been doing refrigeration, walking coolers installations and sheet metal installations for 20 years all alone in LA county. And he only has 40 clients that have kept him in business for so many years, so just be honest with your work quality over quantity is way better at the end of the day.
@@LBZDreamer ohh nice so he does residential. 40 clients for all those years! That's crazy. Hopefully he's making a ton of money? I quit my job at usps and now working at a warehouse for minimum wage, going to go back to school and so hvac once this covid shit gets currd
@@TheEmpireAnimations no , not because no one would hire me. I’m still trying to recover from hurricane ida. In my area it’s very easy to get a job because of a shortage of people. I’ve had companies beg me to jus fill out apps and talk to the human resource rep. Gotta get home straight
