Great job at breaking this down so people of all skill levels can fully understand what's going on 👏 I have a slap riff that was inspired from trying to transcribe RHCP true men don't kill the coyotes and I came across something I really liked and just kept adding little nuances (like a well placed pull off) and eventually had a great slap riff of my very own to love and to cherish and to never let it go. (Imagining Elmyra from looney tunes) Lol In conclusion this lesson doesn't just help one learn slap but also helps people with their creative process. ❤ it

Really well done. I like you guys build this riff up from basically newb to a reasonably realistic line. I've been working on my double thumbing so doing layer 4 as a double thumb ghost feels pretty natural now. Actually following this whole progression using double thumbing (except for the pop) is great practice too - especially layer 6. However, I'm sad that the one technique you didn't cover is the fretting hand slap which apparently some Brit named Mark King was good at. Maybe next vid?

The best part of this riff is that it's a great vehicle for executing trying different techniques. For example, i find double thumbing the hammer on most natural. Also, the double ghost on the A on the D string i tried both with double thumb and right hand followed by a left hand slap.

Oh yes, it will be mine. 😉 My slap technique is parallel (not down), but I don’t go THROUGH the string, so I can’t go back up through it. I hit the string with the knuckle bone of my thumb and kind of BOUNCE off the string.

Stunning! I've been waiting all my life for this, great presentation, the two guys work together very well. Very good, thanks. I have some Qs, eq and bass g setup. Is there an optimum action? distance between the string at 12th fret? Too low and I guess it will clatter and too high it will not pop. Also Eq, is there a peak in Eq needed, do I need to find the magic freq and set a Q, I guess there is some LF cut. Which pup is the best bridge or neck.

Nice video. One thing, with slap I feel locked into a tightly constrained predetermined percussive line. Hard to step out of it and vary things or improvise melodically as I can finger style. Maybe if I was more fluent with slap, but it seems an issue with it.

One thing all these bass slap instructional videos never mentions is the TONE setup. This is crucial to how you will get a clean crisp sound. If you don't have your EQ setup right, you will be struggling to get into any groove no matter your technique. I can tell you guys have at least the bass cranked up, but there is still some treble coming through too. Most beginner basists will only have an 8" practice amp, that does not produce the best slap tone. And all basses will sound different with slap, some will sound easier and snappier, some will sound muted.
@BastardBrad
@BastardBrad 9 месяцев назад
Your comment is absolutely dead on. Some people struggle because they think tone is just in the fingers like most bassist say. Amps make a huge difference....and having them dialed into a particular style.

How long will it take to learn this so it's smooth? A: (I got this from meeting Joe Pass, the legendary jazz guitar player) It doesn't matter how many years you've been playing, the only thing that counts is how many *seconds* you've been playing. So, if you play 5 min a day, it may take you many months/years. If you practice this 4 hours a day, you'll have it in a couple of weeks.

I couldn’t read the brand at the top of Scott’s bass. Is it a Yamaha? A friend of mine from Indianapolis plays one like that on ebony finish. At present, I’m trying to forge a kind of hybrid style on my fretless bass (until I get around to having the fingerboard reinforced with boat epoxy) that involves no thumping with the thumb but does include a little popping with my other fingers. I’ve been led to believe you can’t do this on the Hofner violin bass (and have it sound good). How true is that? Has it got to do with the bass itself, or is it about the pickups?

I'm having trouble with the pops, moreover fretting the octaves, rather than the popping motion itself, I can do the pops cleanly after slapping the 3rd fret of the A string and popping the octave on the G string, its the pop on the D string that doesn't ring out cleanly even though my pinky can easily reach it.

No matter how much I try I just can't get that slappy sound. I'm starting to wonder if it's my bass. It's really old, inherited Aria Prall. Could old mics or strings be an issue? My strings seem so much stiffer than what it looks like yours are. Most likely I'm still just doing something wrong.. but can other factors play a part?
