How to get back into a flipped kayak - Hobie Outback

I flipped my kayak (Hobie Revolution 13) a few years ago when I was fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. I was unable to flip it back over, or get back in it. So-I learned how. In this video I show how to flip your kayak back over and get back in it by yourself (demonstrated in a Hobie Outback).
This demonstration is meant to show how someone of smaller stature and a lower center of gravity (I am 5'3") can flip a kayak back over.
I lost some gear but nothing irreplaceable. Practice getting back in your kayak. I am a generally in-shape individual and consider myself physically capable. The shock of unexpectedly flipping in big water caught me off guard. I was too shaken up to figure it out in the moment.
Fish with a friend when it is possible, especially in big water or less than ideal weather conditions. Always wear a PFD (life jacket).

Certified paddle instructor here- Notice how your pdf isnt helping float you, and you have to worry about swimming the whole time. Always tighten those up until it feels a little restrictive. This way, you get the buoyancy out of it. This will help your self rescue significantly because if you're buoyant, you can push up on the close side of the kayak without simply being pushed under. Good luck!

Can this still be done as far as tightening once you're in the water to help you keep afloat?

Mike Vtosio - The woman in this video is doing everything the hard way. Also, one should never use both hands on one side of a kayak when attempting to climb back in. If you do so and a wave hits the opposite side of your kayak it will knock it right into your face. I always throw one arm over so I am holding my kayak on both sides. I then pull my chest onto my kayak and then swing one leg over it and presto, I'm onboard.

I was taught to right it and then slide yourself up the boat with your legs straddling either side.

Reach under your upside-down kayak with one hand and grab a handle or seat strap from the far side. Put your other hand under the near side. Pull the kayak from the far side while lifting the near side up. Kayak will flip over easier especially in windy or wavy conditions.

I actually find it easier to do it either from the front or the back just by twisting it with my hands if you can imagine that and then when I get in, I’ll either get in from the front or the back by pulling myself up, I don’t do anything on the sides😊 if that makes any sense

Best thing about this video is showing how NOT to go about it 😢

good job. but it seems a struggle. If you add a rope to the handle you can use it as leverage. You would bring the rope over the hull which would help you climb on it. Then use the rope as you lean your body back into the water. Using your weight to your advantage will take less effort. Try it.

Why does this seem like an informative video lacking proper execution? First... That vest is not on properly.

You should probably start by wearing a true kayak PFD jacket first , you were almost completely out of breath.

That's not a kayak. I's a beach toy, I wouldn't recommend taking that out in water over your head without a paddle (on a leash).

Thank you for the video this is very useful probably most people won't watch this until after they've flipped. This happened to me three days, but I was unable to re-enter the kayak because my life preserver deployed. I am seriously thinking about switching off automatic.

Same, I could not re enter because the life vest added too much space in front of my chest. I couldn't 'breach' high enough. I should have deflated the life vest but didn't know how! Swam to shore. I've now watched at least 10 of these re enter videos. Funny how no one wears an inflatable life vest.

Excellent effort: Of course in Australia you'd have to be fighting off attacking hammer head sharks as you attempted to get back into your kayak! Would love to see how fast you'd flip it in that scenario?

A loop of webbing, or even paracord, through the handle, and then tossed over the kayak, works well as a paddle leash and a step. You can step into the loop and use your entire body weight to flip it, without having the climb on top and reach for the handle.

if its a peddle drive or auto pilot you just grab on to the drive and flip it easier then the hobie with fins......I made a step for my old town out of a ratchet strap[ removed the buckles and hooks and sewed steps} and its tied on the side handle havent needed it but its there ....more strength in your legs than arms

Isn't it easier to lift and push the kayak forwards rather that pulling it .. to right it

Always tighten up your vest. It is useless, otherwise.

Thank you for the great video, but your personal floatation device leaves little to be desired.....maybe a decent one for a small....dog or cat?

Hello your video is very informative! What kind of kayak is that am interested in kayak camping and I want a pedal kayak! Could you tell me if that one would be good for it! Also am a beginner and stability is my number one priority! Any thoughts or suggestions? Thank you

Thanks! This is a Hobie Outback, and it is very stable. I am very comfortable in it. The Hobie Pro Angler is heavier, but it is also wider which gives extra storage. Of the ones that I have used, I like the Outback best from a cost/size/weight comparison.
