Summary of the 3 strategies 1) Just Show Up (more) 2) Train with intention • Work on a specific move and try to hit it daily for like week • Work on Broad Topics (eg. Guard retention, guard passing, finding the back) • 2-3 weeks • Have short and long term goals 3) STUDY • Watch footage of your own sparring sessions or yourself in competition • RU-vid (choose reputable source) • Instructionals (BjjFanatics etc) •
Also, I like the new and improved thumbnail design. You’re putting in work to your channel and will be rewarded for it down the line. I think building personal audiences on social media is the ‘New Wave’ for athletes, particularly in JJ. One tip: don’t repeat yourself in title and thumbnail. Provide relevant but different information in each that complement one another and opens up a curiosity loop that your video will eventually close. Keep it up GB.
This was perfect timing. I've been trying to narrow down a strategy. I'm ranked as a brown belt. I find myself moving forward without truly understanding the depth of certain positions. I train in each technique on the day of training, but to reach an advantageous position, rarely landing submissions. Settling for body control, i.e., body lock to pass. Thank you for information this will be a very useful tool.
@KPisOnTheMic most people just give belts out like it’s a candy shop … I guarantee you I would sub this “brown belt” within 5 minutes Most schools are horrible ❤
Mr Bodoni you are a great teacher. Thanks! Some friendly feedback: Something that will help your channel is better lighting and sound equipment. Also, by upping the variation in intonation you will attract and retain viewers and will be more on par with other creators.
Excellent video 👍 A quick note to add for instructionals…I’ve found a TON of excellent older wrestling instructionals on RU-vid from top tier coaches and competitors. A lot of the kids wrestling seminars are really good for us jiujitsu people since our wrestling skills are pretty rudimentary. This is also wrestling beyond the idea of takedowns such as wrestling from the bottom or from failed shots. You do have to make considerations of how it applies with submissions existing but still it’s cool to check out. Like I’ve been exploring double over hooks lately since it’s helped me combat body locks and attack in butterfly guard and now I’m exploring them from standing too. Only decent resource I’ve found for it is RU-vid wrestling.
I love that you said to record your rolls. I’m a 3 stripe purple belt and saw a great difference in my development once I started recording and reviewing my rolls. Thanks for the vid. Loving the advice from a top level grappler.
Giancarlo, bro, please keep making videos about jiu-jitsu. I found your channel before your excellent victory at ADCC and for me it was obvious, that you really understood a thing of two in BJJ. You are a great fighter and a blessed teacher
Its amazing that someone at the top level will share this iformation freely. Will definately be taking on all 3 of Giancarlo's tips so big thanks to him 🙏 I liked what he said about RU-vid and being careful about what you watch, there is so much info out there. Lately i have been limiting to myself to only Danaher ( or his team, especially Gordon Ryan) , Chewjitsu, Jordan teaches Jiu-jitsu, Lachlan Giles, Marcelo Garcia and obviously pretty much anything from Bernardo. Sounds like a lot but previously i was all over the place going down rabbit holes of useless information.
Thank you for laying this out 👍🏽 especially the timeline piece on short and long term goals (broad) that makes more sense to me and gives me a direction to aim
Great video. Especially your personal anecdotes about intention-setting re: specific techniques, and how you didn't realize the "gains" until the after those periods.
Great content as usual, i would really love if you did a foot sweeps/standing instructional, i have your chest on back in front of the elbows and i really love the standing portion
Really excited to see what direction you take your youtube channel. I always love to see combat sports athletes branching out and creating there own content
I am not sure if you have made a video like this recently but I would love to see a video of your daily schedule or weekly training schedule. I struggle a lot with recovering properly after training and weightlifting. I would be interested in your opinion on what you do for recovery especially aside from proper nutrition
that is what i tell them all the time !!! i have long legs !! so triangule is on my list ! but i say that all the time !!! there is so many moves you have to get better at one maybe 10 that is it !!! muito obrigado .... i like these ... nortsouth choke .... kimura .... triangule .... butterfly sweep and choke ... darse ... RABJJ luke nassir
Good, I show up everyday, and been working on Open guards for the past 2 months, and hoping to continue for the next 2 years. Guard retention > k-guard > DLR > RDLR > shallow K > Brimbolo > Situp guard > Repeat Do you think this is achievable? For study, I do study Submeta (from Lachlan Giles)
acabei de achar meu canal de vídeos de jiu jitsu favorito. É incrível como poucas pessoas falam sobre como aprender jiu jitsu de verdade. um salve do Brasil, sou seu fã.
I was fortunate enough to attend one of your seminars last fall, it was an absolute blast. You're a very talented instructor and I'll definitely be looking forward to more uploads. This is almost exactly how I approach my training. I've always felt that training with a specific purpose was the most important factor. I even have short and long term timelines already laid out, much like you described, with my ultimate goal of becoming skilled enough to win trials, qualify for ADCC, and earn a chance to compete among the best in the world. Eventually I'll make my way out to New Wave and hopefully get the opportunity to train with you some day. Until then I'll be following and studying all of your content. Right now my primary focus is on guard passing so any videos on how to overwhelm and exhaust your opponent from top position would be greatly appreciated! I wish you the best of luck in growing your channel and on your upcoming title match with Marinho.
Hey Giancarlo. I watched your documentary on flograppling the other day. Your sharp and sudden progress seemed to come from believing in yourself and switching to a world class team. Do you think Belief and Team are also massively important?
Hello, for example if my teacher shows how to pass the half guard , should I watch an instructional on the passing half guard in addition, to have as much choice as possible ?
The key to being good at jiujitsu is have a strong well trained body the cognitive ability to make good tactical decisions quickly Some of us are just better suited for this than other All those white and blue belts that quit would stick with it if they could but they're just not built for it
Hi Giancarlo, thank you for the insights. Do you suggest to choose between focusing on specific move OR broader topic, or you can do both at the same time? For example: I focus on guard retention for 3 weeks AND at the same time in week 1 I focus on triangles, week 2 armbars, week 3 RNCs. Or it's better to just focus on one and don't mix broad with specific?
How would you suggest to add in take downs/Judo without taking out time from Jiu Jitsu? I've added in Judo for 30-45 minutes during open mat after class after getting all my rolls in. I've thought about going 2 days BJJ/ 2 days Judo. 44 years old. Two year Blue belt. Non competitor.
These are all great points, but one thing that hobbiest should know is that when he says a week for him that's essentially a month for us. Maybe even longer depending on how much time is allocated to rolling and drilling what you want to drill rather than what ur instructor tells u to drill
