I started playing drums in June 2022. I always say, you can’t change time, but you can change how you use it. I practice anywhere from 1-5hrs a day and am doing fairly well.
@@slectivehearing well I'm light years better than I was back then haha. I practiced a lot over the winter but now I'm so busy with work I maybe have 2 hours of practice in the last month.
Most likable and informative online teacher out there right now. And, believe me, I've been learning the drums for 20+ years. There's always something new to learn. I've learned so much about technique between you and El Estepario that it's truly unquantifiable. Thanks again, Gabe. 🤘🏻
professional and college drummer with around 5k hours here, and I basically fully agree with this video getting better at drumming comes down to these steps, and generally you should develop all these skills at the same time at a similar rate, but you can focus on any of them in any order that feels most inspiring or fun. Don't just focus on mastering one aspect and then nothing else though, because then you'll be making barely any progress while putting in a ton of effort. (1) doing a bunch of hand and stick control exercises: practice various rudiments while primarily focusing on keeping good technique, and then up the tempo and change the accents of the rudiments (2) getting better at macro time and micro time: both skills naturally come with hours, but deliberately practice macro time by counting while playing, and use metronomes that play for 1 bar and then cut out for 1 bar. (pro metronome has that feature. Benny Greb's metronome has it too). Get better at micro time by counting while playing and really focusing on the placement of your notes and whether they're perfectly in time and spaced properly. Record yourself playing, and observe your microtime mistakes and successes, and then adjust accordingly. Hours and hours, and you'll sound way better. Micro Time is what differentiates most drummers' skill levels, next to chops. (3) limb interdependence: jazz is great for this, but really just play a groove then focus on one limb and make it do whatever you want while keeping the groove going. try and make two limbs do whatever they want while playing a groove, then change which limbs you're focusing on. (4) drum fill freedom: look up gospel chops tutorials. gospel chops is true drum fill freedom. Basically, just play linear rudiments EVERYWHERE around the drum kit with different accents every where and replace a bunch of the notes with the bass drum. Do it so much that you can play gospel chops fast. Then you can deliberately imagine your own fills, and see how fast you can learn to play the fill you created. Eventually you'll be able to imagine your own fills and play them on the spot. Amazing feeling. (5) expansive beat vocabulary: just learn a bunch of different beats and grooves, and then start making your own. Play them at different tempos. play the perfect beats for each song, then play the wrong beats to each song and have fun with it. Play rock beats to jazz songs, funk beats to metal songs, drum n bass beats to regae. It's really fun and helps you understand music with more depth and why certain genres sound more natural different drumming elements (6) great creative taste: Learn to accurately emulate all your favorite drummers. Will be be tough, but it can be fun, and it's always incredibly helpful for progress. listen to a bunch of music. different genres, different vibes. Mostly listen to music you like, but spend some time listening to music you don't like and identify the aspects you do and don't appreciate. start imagining your own music with your own drums. Listen to a bunch of drummers. Eventually you should be able to name 10 drummers you love and the different qualities of their playing you like and how they are all different from each other. Making those distinctions proves you're actually understanding the language of drums.
I love this! One concept dozens of possibilities, what a fresh reminder. The practice routine with the 6 pillars of drummung is da bomb! Loving DBO! 🔥🥁🔥✌️😉🤘
Hi Gabe, first of all, I love all your videos and I appreciate all the time and effort you put in to them (i would be a terrible drummer without them). Second, I was wondering if you could potentially one day make a video discussing how to create the perfect song routine for practicing. I always struggle when choosing what song to play and I end up picking the wrong ones which sometimes end up in discouragement, which results in me not necessarily achieving my goals In the future. It would be great if you would make a video discussing this topic because it would allow you to play your fav songs, have fun, work your way to achieving your goals and it would boost motivation. Obviously you don’t have too, but I think it would be a great suggestion. Thanks for all you do and I hope you and I Prevail have an awesome 2023 ✌️
That's a huge obstacle that I face as well. Making the most of the time that I don't have to waste. Have you found anything that works for massive gains?

Could you make a Video about like a Beat with a Little Fill on 4 and 4& or something like this. So the resolution is to have a variety in the Beat. Thanks
