How to get Driver’s License in Canada? Convert Indian DL to Class 5 License I International Students

Hi Everyone!
This video talks about how to get your driver’s license in Canada and especially in Vancouver BC. We will compare the difference between G1, G2 and G license and Class 7, Class 5 license.
If you are coming to Ontario, you will need your Indian Driving License Extract, However, In British Columbia, Indian Driving license extract is not required. The process of converting your Indian DL to Class 7 License includes giving a Knowledge Test, submitting your Indian DL to ICBC and then successfully passing the Class 5 road tests. Whereas, if you are applying for your Canada DL for the first time, you will need to first pass the knowledge test then you get your Learner License. You can then take Driving lessons and give your Class 7 (Novice) New driver road test and if you successfully pass then you have to wait another 1 year to give your Class 5 Road test. If we talk about the cost, then it will cost around 200 to 300 CAD in total to get your driver license in Canada. Hope you find this video informative and useful.

As you said you failed the test. What happens then? Did you give it the second time and got class 5 or did they put you under N once you passed?

In ontario, if you have 3 years DL extract, you go for G1 and then directly G. But just in case if you fail in G, you have to go to G2 then again G. Is it the same in BC ? If you have indian DL and you go to knowledge test and then directly class 5 exam and just in case if you fail ? You can instantly book another class 5 exam ?

Hey, that was very well explained. Could you please clarify if someone on a visitor visa with a driving license from their native country is eligible to obtain a Class 5 license after passing the knowledge test?

They don’t suggest to get BC License on Visitor Visa as you will have to submit your Native license. You can call and confirm with ICBC. Thanks.

Yes, BC govt only allows you to hold 1 Driving license at a time.

No, BC govt has a rule that you can only hold 1 DL at a time. So if you plan to take BC Class 5 license, you will have to submit your Indian DL. Aa a loophole, you can try to register Indian DL as lost and see if you can get a new Indian DL later when you visit India. Thanks.

In Ontario, they only take DL extract and give you back your Indian license.

No, you will need to give Road Test to be able to drive a car by yourself. If converting Indian DL to Class 5, You will get a Class 5 Learner on which you can drive with someone in your car who has a Class 5 full license. Thanks.

Any Indian License that is less than 2 years old is not recognized by BC govt. So you will have to follow the same process as a New candidate. Thanks.

Um, Not really sure about it. I suggest confirm this by calling ICBC or meet them once at their office. They will give you the correct information.

bro make duplicate License in india simple, go online apply for dupicate License, I have both If SUrender original one but still ihave govnt issued dupicate one, I can use that one in india

Im curious, when do they take your indian licence away? When you pass your 5L test or when you arrive for road test or when you pass the road test?

They take away the Indian DL after you pass the knowledge test. They will give you a Class 5L Yellow Paper as temporary DL until you pass the Class 5 road test. Hope that clears your doubt.

Indian license less than 2 years old is not considered in British columbia. You will need to start your process from scratch i.e., Knowledge test then Class 7 License then Class 5 license. Thanks.
